How to Receive Guidance from God, Part 1
Every believer needs God's guidance, yet it remains one of the greatest unmet needs in the Church today. Drawing from Joshua 1:8, Pastor Mirek Hufton teaches that prosperity and success flow directly from walking in God's will, not our own. Pastor Hufton identifies three categories of guidance: discovering your eternal calling, navigating major life decisions, and handling the countless daily choices we face. 1. SERMON RECAP
In this message, I walked us through the foundational truth that God genuinely wants to guide every one of us — not just in the big, life-defining moments, but in the countless daily decisions we face as well. I broke guidance down into three categories: our eternal destiny and calling, major life decisions, and the everyday choices that come at us like machine-gun fire. The key breakthrough I want us to carry this week is this: God guides us through His Word and through our spirit — not through our minds, our emotions, or our five senses — and we can develop our ability to hear Him more clearly.
2. KEY SCRIPTURE
Romans 8:14-16 (NKJV)
"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, 'Abba, Father.' The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God."

Think of a time you followed your GPS and it led you somewhere completely wrong — or a time you ignored it and wished you hadn't. What happened?
(Give everyone a chance to laugh and share before moving into the discussion.)
4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Question 1 — Opening Up the Topic I described three categories of guidance: your eternal calling, major life decisions, and everyday choices. Which of those three do you personally find the hardest to trust God with, and why do you think that is?
Question 2 — Digging into the Word Read Joshua 1:8 together: "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success."
God connected meditating on His Word directly to prosperity and success. What does meditating on Scripture actually look like in a practical, everyday life — not just reading it quickly and moving on?
Question 3 — Honest Reflection I said something a little uncomfortable in this message: that we sometimes dress up our emotions or our unwillingness with spiritual language — saying things like "I just don't feel led" when really we're avoiding something. Without naming anyone else, have you ever caught yourself doing that? What was going on underneath it?
Question 4 — Spirit vs. Soul Read Hebrews 4:12 together: "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit..."
I made the point that your spirit senses while your emotions feel, and they can feel very similar from the inside. How do you personally try to tell the difference between a leading from God's Spirit and a strong feeling from your own emotions? What has helped you — or what has tripped you up?
Question 5 — The Sheep Need a Shepherd Read Isaiah 53:6 together: "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way..."
I used a pretty funny story about 300 sheep all turning the wrong direction together. In what ways do you see people — or yourself — following the crowd instead of following the Shepherd? What makes it so easy to drift that direction?
Question 6 — Moving Forward I said that developing your spirit is a lifetime endeavor — you never fully arrive, but you keep getting better. What is one area of your spiritual life right now where you sense God is inviting you to grow in how you listen to and follow Him? What would taking even a small step look like?
5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE
This week, try a "spirit-first" pause.
Pick one decision you know is coming up this week — big or small. Before you analyze it, search Google, or ask everyone's opinion, stop and spend at least five quiet minutes in prayer, intentionally setting your mind aside and simply asking, "Lord, what does my spirit sense about this?" Write down whatever impression comes — even if it feels small or uncertain. At your next group meeting, be ready to share what happened.
6. PRAYER POINTS
Close your time together by praying over these three specific areas:

For open, teachable hearts — Ask God to help each person in your group become genuinely more spirit-conscious this week, willing to let His Word and His Spirit lead rather than leaning only on human logic or feelings.

For anyone facing a major decision right now — Without needing details, invite group members to silently hold before God any significant crossroads they are standing at — a job, a relationship, a move, a calling — and ask for clarity and peace.

For growing hunger for the Word and prayer — Ask God to stir a fresh appetite in each person for feeding their spirit through Scripture and prayer, especially praying in the Spirit, so that their spiritual "guidance system" grows stronger every day.
7. MEMORY VERSE

Write it on a sticky note. Put it somewhere you will see it every single day this week.

God Wants to Lead You
Romans 8:14 — "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God."
I want you to hear this straight from my heart today — God actually wants to guide your life. Not because you've earned it, not because you're spiritually impressive, but simply because He loves you. He's the Good Shepherd, and you are His sheep. I know that comparison doesn't always flatter us, but honestly? Sheep need a shepherd, and so do we. I've watched people — myself included — push forward on our own strength, certain we had it figured out, only to end up somewhere we never intended. God isn't withholding direction from you. He's offering it. The question is whether we're willing to stop long enough to receive it. Today, I want to challenge you to simply acknowledge that you need His guidance. That's where it begins — not with having all the answers, but with trusting the One who does.
Father, I admit I don't always know the way forward, and I thank You that You do. Help me today to stop trusting only my own understanding and start leaning into Your leadership. You are my Good Shepherd, and I choose to follow You.
Your GPS Is the Word

I love this verse because God doesn't leave success vague — He tells us exactly how to get there. Meditate on the Word. Speak the Word. Do the Word. That's the formula, and it's not complicated, but it does require commitment. I think about those old road trips with highlighters and paper maps, hoping you didn't miss a turn. The Word of God is better than any GPS — it never loses signal, never recalculates you into a swamp in South Alabama, and never arrives at the wrong destination. But here's the thing — it only works when you actually use it. A GPS sitting in your glove compartment won't get you anywhere. You've got to open the Word, feed on it, let it get inside you. That's how your spirit gets programmed for God's direction.
Lord, I want Your Word to be the first thing that shapes my thinking each day, not the news or my feelings. Help me to meditate on scripture and let it truly guide my steps. I trust that Your Word leads to real success.
Spirit First, Feelings Second
Hebrews 4:12 — "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."
This is one of the most important things I can teach you, and I want you to really hear it — God never said He would lead you by your emotions. He leads you by your spirit. Your emotions are real, and they matter, but they make terrible navigators. I've watched people leave churches, walk away from callings, and even walk down wedding aisles against what their spirit was clearly saying — all because their emotions were louder in that moment. Your spirit senses; your emotions feel. They're close neighbors, which is exactly why this verse is so powerful. The Word of God is the only thing sharp enough to divide them apart so you can tell the difference. When you're facing a big decision and everything feels right but something inside is unsettled — pay attention to that something. That's often your spirit speaking.
Holy Spirit, teach me to know the difference between what I feel and what my spirit is actually sensing from You. Help me not to label my emotions as Your voice when they aren't. I want to be truly spirit-led, not just emotionally driven.
Stop Going Astray on Your Own
Isaiah 53:6 — "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all."
I'll be honest with you — I've created some of my own storms. Not because the devil attacked me, but because I turned my own way when God had a better direction. Isaiah nailed it: every one of us has that pull toward our own way. We want what we want, when we want it, and we can dress it up spiritually if we're not careful. The good news in this verse, though, is that Jesus carried the full weight of our wrong turns. He's not angry at your detours — He's already redeemed them. But I don't want you living on detours your whole life when the main road is available. The broad path requires no guidance at all — anyone can drift. It takes something alive on the inside, a real relationship with God, to walk the narrow road with confidence. That road leads somewhere worth going.
Father, forgive me for the times I've gone my own way and called it guidance. Thank You that Jesus redeems every wrong turn. Help me today to genuinely choose Your way over mine, even when mine feels easier or more comfortable.
Feed What You Want to Follow
John 6:63 — "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life."
Whatever you feed grows strongest, and whatever you starve grows weakest. That's true in every area of life, and it's absolutely true in the spirit. I've said it many times — if you stop feeding the Word of God into your spirit, the batteries run down. When the batteries run down, you shift into body mode, emotion mode, circumstance mode. And suddenly you're making major life decisions based on how Monday morning feels, and that's a dangerous place to be. Jesus said His words are spirit and life — not information, not religious knowledge, but actual living fuel for your inner man. Combined with praying in the Holy Spirit, feeding on the Word consistently is how you keep your guidance system sharp and sensitive. This is a lifetime investment, and you'll never regret a single moment you spent on it. Start this weekend — just feed your spirit, and watch what grows.
Jesus, Your words are spirit and life, and I want them living richly inside me. Help me to be consistent in feeding my spirit this week, not just when I feel like it, but as a daily discipline. I want to be led well, starting from the inside out.
