Praying the WORD of GOD

Pastor Linda Hufton · 2025-11-16

What happens when prayer feels dry, distant, or disconnected from results? In this powerful message, I walk through what it truly means to wield the Word of God as a weapon in your prayer life, and why the combination of the Word and the Holy Spirit is the same creative force that spoke the universe into existence. If your prayers need a breakthrough, this message will show you exactly where to start.

"Praying the Word of God" — Pastor Linda Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Linda Hufton opened by sharing her personal goal at the start of the year: to grow in her prayer life. She taught that the Bible is not merely a book to be read but a living weapon — the sword of the Spirit — that must be spoken aloud and wielded in prayer, in partnership with the Holy Spirit. Drawing from Ephesians 6 and several key scriptures, Pastor Linda challenged the congregation to move beyond familiar, go-to verses and ask God for fresh, Spirit-quickened words that bring power and life to their specific battles.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

John 15:7 (NKJV)

"If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you."

3. ICE BREAKER

What is one word, phrase, or scripture that has stuck with you during a difficult season of life, even if you are not sure why it came to mind at the time?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Pastor Linda described how growing in prayer often reveals how much further there is still to go. Has anyone in the group experienced that tension — making progress but feeling more aware of how much more is possible? What did that feel like, and how did it affect your motivation?

2. Pastor Linda pointed to Genesis 1, where the Spirit of God hovered over the darkness, waiting for the spoken word before creation began. She said the Holy Spirit and the Word of God cannot be separated — they work together to create. What does that picture mean to you personally when you think about your own unanswered prayers or situations that still need to change?

3. Hebrews 4:12 describes the Word of God as living and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword. Pastor Linda made the point that the Word is not a sword sitting in a book — it only becomes a sword when it is spoken. What is the difference, in practical terms, between reading a scripture and actually wielding it in prayer?

4. Pastor Linda shared the story of the woman dying of cancer who was told by Pastor Yonggi Cho to write one healing scripture ten thousand times while reading it aloud. Somewhere in that process, the Word became real and alive to her and she was healed. What do you think it means for a scripture to move from something you know in your head to something the Holy Spirit makes alive in your heart? Has anyone experienced that shift?

5. She referenced one of David's mighty men in 2 Samuel 23, whose hand stuck to the sword after fighting so long it would not let go. Pastor Linda used that image to describe the kind of persistent, word-saturated prayer that wins battles even when everyone else has stepped back. What tends to make people loosen their grip on the Word when a battle drags on, and what has helped anyone in the group hold on?

6. Pastor Linda encouraged the group not to always default to the same familiar scriptures but to ask the Holy Spirit for a fresh word that speaks directly to the current need. What might make someone hesitant to do that, and what would it look like practically to ask God for a specific word for a specific situation this week?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, each group member is encouraged to identify one specific need or battle they are currently facing and ask the Holy Spirit to lead them to a scripture that speaks directly to that situation. Once that scripture is found, they should write it on a card or piece of paper, place it somewhere they will see it daily, and read it aloud at least once each morning and once each evening for the entire week. At the next group meeting, members are invited to share what scripture they received and what, if anything, began to shift.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each group member would develop a deeper hunger for the Word of God — not just as a devotional habit but as a living weapon in their daily battles.

  • Pray that the Holy Spirit would quicken specific scriptures to each person in the group this week, turning familiar words into life-giving, faith-building rhema words that match their exact situation.

  • Pray for perseverance in prayer — that no one in the group would loosen their grip on the Word when the battle feels long, the answer seems delayed, or they feel as though they are standing alone.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)

"For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

Give Attention to His Words

Proverbs 4:20-22 — "My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh."

On Sunday I talked about how easy it is to go to the same handful of scriptures whenever we face a need — our tried and true verses. And while those are precious, God has so much more waiting for us in His Word. Proverbs 4 is not a suggestion. It is a call to active, intentional attention. Give attention. Incline your ear. Do not let it depart from your eyes. That requires effort, and honestly, it requires choosing the Word over the scroll, over the news, over the noise. I know how hard that is. But the promise attached to that effort is stunning — life and health to all your flesh. Not some of your flesh. All of it. Every need you carry today has an answer somewhere in that book. The question is whether we are leaning in close enough to hear it.

Lord, I want to give my full attention to Your Word today, not just glance at it. Quiet the noise around me and help me lean in and listen. Let Your words become life and health in every part of me.

Set a specific five-minute window today — not during a commute, not while multitasking — to sit quietly and read one passage of scripture out loud, slowly, and let it settle in your heart.

The Word Was There From the Beginning

John 1:1 — "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

On Sunday I spent some time in John 1:1, and I told you I could honestly stay there forever. In the beginning was the Word. Not an idea, not a concept — the Word, alive and present before anything else existed. And then John 1:3 reminds us that all things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. That means creation itself happened through the spoken Word. The Holy Spirit hovered, waiting, and when God spoke, things came into being. That pattern has never changed. Whatever you are believing God to create in your situation right now — a restored relationship, a financial breakthrough, a healing — it still requires the Word and the Spirit working together. You are not holding a history book in your hands. You are holding the same creative force that spoke light into darkness. That should change the way you open it.

Father, remind me today that Your Word is not old or powerless — it is the same force that created everything I can see. Help me come to it with that kind of reverence and expectation. Let it create something new in my situation right now.

Write John 1:1 on a notecard or sticky note and place it somewhere you will see it multiple times today — your mirror, your desk, your dashboard — as a reminder of what you are actually carrying.

Your Sword Is Already in Your Hand

Hebrews 4:12 — "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

On Sunday I got excited talking about the Greek word for sword in Ephesians 6 — the machaira, a thrusting dagger used for close combat and everyday self-defense. Not a long ceremonial sword hanging on a wall somewhere. A weapon kept right on your side, ready the moment danger is near. That is what the Word of God is for you. Hebrews 4:12 tells us it is living and powerful and sharper than any blade. The enemy is not afraid of a Bible sitting on your nightstand. He is not afraid of scripture you vaguely remember hearing once. But when you open your mouth and speak the Word with the Holy Spirit behind it, that is when the battle shifts. You are not defenseless. You are armed. The question I have been asking myself this week is whether I am actually using what I am carrying.

Holy Spirit, I do not want to carry my sword and never draw it. Teach me to wield the Word in close combat — in the middle of hard days, hard conversations, and hard battles. Help me speak it with confidence today.

Identify one specific struggle you are facing right now and find one scripture that speaks directly to it. Write it down and speak it out loud at least three times today, not rushing through it.

When the Spirit Makes the Word Come Alive

John 6:63 — "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life."

On Sunday I shared the story of the woman who wrote a healing scripture ten thousand times at Prayer Mountain under Pastor Cho's direction. And somewhere in the middle of all that writing and speaking, the Holy Spirit quickened that Word to her and she was healed. I also told you about Lillian B. Yeomans, who came bursting out of her room having finally grasped what had been right in front of her — by His stripes she was healed. The Word did not change. But the Spirit made it come alive. Jesus said in John 6:63 that His words are spirit and life. There is a difference between reading scripture as information and receiving it as a living word from God. I am not saying you have to write anything ten thousand times. But I am saying do not give up on a word just because it has not yet become real to you. Keep going.

Holy Spirit, take the Word I have been reading and make it come alive in me today. I do not want just information — I want the life that Jesus promised is in these words. Quicken something in my heart that changes how I pray.

Take a scripture you have read many times before and sit with it quietly for five minutes, asking the Holy Spirit to give you fresh understanding. Do not rush. Just wait and listen.

Let Your Hand Stick to the Sword

John 15:7 — "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you will, and it shall be done for you."

On Sunday I closed with the story of one of David's mighty men whose hand stuck to the sword after a long battle — he had wielded it so long, so hard, that he could not let go. And I told you that is what I want for my own prayer life. I want my hand to stick to the Word. John 15:7 is where we started the whole conversation — if you abide in Him and His words abide in you, you ask what you will and it shall be done. That word done in the Greek carries the idea of assembling, creating, bringing into being. Some answers require assembly. Some prayers take longer than we expected. But the Word is not failing. The Spirit is hovering, waiting for us to speak. Do not put the sword down just because you are weary. The victory belongs to those whose hand stays on it.

Lord, I do not want to quit before the answer comes. Help me stay in Your Word, stay in prayer, and keep speaking even when I am tired. Let my hand stick to the sword and let Your Spirit do what only You can do.

Write down one need you have been bringing to God and commit to praying a specific scripture over it every day for the next seven days — not just mentioning the need, but actually speaking the Word over it out loud.
