WHO THIS SERIES IS FOR
This series is for any believer who has ever felt uncertain about a major decision, wondered if they are living in God's will, or sensed there is more to their life than what they are currently experiencing. It is also a wonderful series for newer believers who want to build healthy spiritual habits from the start. No prior Bible knowledge is required — just an open heart and a willingness to grow.
SESSION 1: HOW TO RECEIVE GUIDANCE FROM GOD, PART 1
OPENING REFLECTION QUESTION
Think of a time you made a major decision — a job, a relationship, a move. Looking back, how did you decide? What were you listening to?

God Wants to Lead You
Romans 8:14 — "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God."
I want you to hear this straight from my heart today — God actually wants to guide your life. Not because you've earned it, not because you're spiritually impressive, but simply because He loves you. He's the Good Shepherd, and you are His sheep. I know that comparison doesn't always flatter us, but honestly? Sheep need a shepherd, and so do we. I've watched people — myself included — push forward on our own strength, certain we had it figured out, only to end up somewhere we never intended. God isn't withholding direction from you. He's offering it. The question is whether we're willing to stop long enough to receive it. Today, I want to challenge you to simply acknowledge that you need His guidance. That's where it begins — not with having all the answers, but with trusting the One who does.
Father, I admit I don't always know the way forward, and I thank You that You do. Help me today to stop trusting only my own understanding and start leaning into Your leadership. You are my Good Shepherd, and I choose to follow You.
Your GPS Is the Word
Joshua 1:8 — "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success."
I love this verse because God doesn't leave success vague — He tells us exactly how to get there. Meditate on the Word. Speak the Word. Do the Word. That's the formula, and it's not complicated, but it does require commitment. I think about those old road trips with highlighters and paper maps, hoping you didn't miss a turn. The Word of God is better than any GPS — it never loses signal, never recalculates you into a swamp in South Alabama, and never arrives at the wrong destination. But here's the thing — it only works when you actually use it. A GPS sitting in your glove compartment won't get you anywhere. You've got to open the Word, feed on it, let it get inside you. That's how your spirit gets programmed for God's direction.
Lord, I want Your Word to be the first thing that shapes my thinking each day, not the news or my feelings. Help me to meditate on scripture and let it truly guide my steps. I trust that Your Word leads to real success.
Spirit First, Feelings Second
Hebrews 4:12 — "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."
This is one of the most important things I can teach you, and I want you to really hear it — God never said He would lead you by your emotions. He leads you by your spirit. Your emotions are real, and they matter, but they make terrible navigators. I've watched people leave churches, walk away from callings, and even walk down wedding aisles against what their spirit was clearly saying — all because their emotions were louder in that moment. Your spirit senses; your emotions feel. They're close neighbors, which is exactly why this verse is so powerful. The Word of God is the only thing sharp enough to divide them apart so you can tell the difference. When you're facing a big decision and everything feels right but something inside is unsettled — pay attention to that something. That's often your spirit speaking.
Holy Spirit, teach me to know the difference between what I feel and what my spirit is actually sensing from You. Help me not to label my emotions as Your voice when they aren't. I want to be truly spirit-led, not just emotionally driven.
Stop Going Astray on Your Own
Isaiah 53:6 — "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all."
I'll be honest with you — I've created some of my own storms. Not because the devil attacked me, but because I turned my own way when God had a better direction. Isaiah nailed it: every one of us has that pull toward our own way. We want what we want, when we want it, and we can dress it up spiritually if we're not careful. The good news in this verse, though, is that Jesus carried the full weight of our wrong turns. He's not angry at your detours — He's already redeemed them. But I don't want you living on detours your whole life when the main road is available. The broad path requires no guidance at all — anyone can drift. It takes something alive on the inside, a real relationship with God, to walk the narrow road with confidence. That road leads somewhere worth going.
Father, forgive me for the times I've gone my own way and called it guidance. Thank You that Jesus redeems every wrong turn. Help me today to genuinely choose Your way over mine, even when mine feels easier or more comfortable.
Feed What You Want to Follow
John 6:63 — "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life."
Whatever you feed grows strongest, and whatever you starve grows weakest. That's true in every area of life, and it's absolutely true in the spirit. I've said it many times — if you stop feeding the Word of God into your spirit, the batteries run down. When the batteries run down, you shift into body mode, emotion mode, circumstance mode. And suddenly you're making major life decisions based on how Monday morning feels, and that's a dangerous place to be. Jesus said His words are spirit and life — not information, not religious knowledge, but actual living fuel for your inner man. Combined with praying in the Holy Spirit, feeding on the Word consistently is how you keep your guidance system sharp and sensitive. This is a lifetime investment, and you'll never regret a single moment you spent on it. Start this weekend — just feed your spirit, and watch what grows.
Jesus, Your words are spirit and life, and I want them living richly inside me. Help me to be consistent in feeding my spirit this week, not just when I feel like it, but as a daily discipline. I want to be led well, starting from the inside out.
God Really Wants to Guide You
Psalm 119:105 — "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
I want you to know something straight from my heart — God genuinely wants to guide you. He's not hiding His will like some cosmic treasure hunt designed to frustrate you. He's your Shepherd, and a good shepherd knows the way. I remember early in my faith walk, I was like a kid with a Shelby GT Mustang — pedal to the metal, full of excitement, zero wisdom. I hit trees. I made costly mistakes in business. But when I finally sat down and listened, God said, "Son, it works — but you've got to hear what I tell you to do." That's the part I was missing. You don't have to figure life out alone. He knows where every obstacle is. He sees what's coming before you do. Your job today is simply to slow down enough to hear Him.
Father, thank You for being a God who actually wants to show me the way. Help me to slow down today and trust that You are guiding me. I don't want to run ahead of You anymore.
Feed Your Spirit the Word
1 Peter 2:2 — "Like newborn babies, intensely crave the pure spiritual milk of God's word, for this milk will cause you to grow into maturity, fully nourished and strong for life."
Here's something I've learned the hard way — your spirit can only guide you accurately when it's been fed. When I came into the faith, I was spiritually newborn, full of enthusiasm but starving for the Word. A weak spirit has a weak voice. If you can barely hear your spirit, I want to ask you honestly — when did you last seriously feed it? The Bible says to *intensely crave* the Word. Not casually browse it. Not skim it when you feel like it. Crave it the way a newborn cries for milk. First John 2:14 says young men are strong because the Word of God abides in them. That Word living inside you builds spiritual muscle. And you're going to need that strength when life hits you hard and your emotions are screaming at you. Feed your spirit today.
Lord, give me a real hunger for Your Word — not just religious routine, but a genuine craving. Let Your Word go deep into my spirit and make me strong from the inside out.
Don't Be Led by Your Emotions
Romans 8:5 — "For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit."
I'll be completely honest with you — your emotions will lead you into the swamp every single time. I've watched people make life-altering decisions — quitting jobs, leaving churches, ending relationships — all because of how they *felt* in a moment. Feelings are real, but they are not reliable guides. God doesn't communicate through your feelings. He communicates through your spirit. And your spirit has to be stronger than your emotions for you to hear Him clearly. Part of spiritual maturity is learning to respond rather than react. When someone hurts me, my emotions want to write a very short check to their next ministry with a note attached — but my spirit says bless them, and bless them generously. That's not natural. That's supernatural. It only happens when your spirit is strong enough to overrule your flesh. Let's get there together.
Father, I confess I've made too many decisions based on feelings rather than Your Spirit. Strengthen me today to respond from the inside out, not the outside in.
The Word and the Spirit Always Agree
Proverbs 4:20-22 — "Pay attention to all that I have to say. Fill your thoughts with my words until they penetrate deep into your spirit. Then as you unwrap my words they will impart true life and radiant health into the very core of your being."
One of the most important things I can tell you is this — the Word and the Spirit will never contradict each other. Never. If what you're feeling in your spirit contradicts what this Book plainly says, I promise you — it's not God. I've seen people justify disobeying Scripture because they "felt led." We use that phrase a lot in charismatic circles until we drift into real error. Here's my rule: before I chase after any spiritual impression, I check it against the Word. If it doesn't line up, I set it down. But when you marinate your spirit in Scripture — when you soak it, saturate it, let it penetrate — your spirit becomes calibrated to God's voice. You start to *know* the difference between His leading and your own thoughts. That's what we're after. A spirit so full of the Word that God can trust it to guide you accurately.
Lord, I want my spirit and Your Word to be in perfect agreement. Help me to fill my inner life with Scripture so that my hearing becomes sharp and trustworthy.
A Strong Spirit for the Journey Ahead
Ephesians 4:23-24 — "Be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness."
I want to close this week with a challenge and an encouragement. You were born again as a spiritual baby — and that's perfectly fine. But you were never meant to *stay* a baby. God's design is that you grow into a mature believer with a strong spirit that can accurately hear His voice, resist the pull of your flesh, and walk confidently in His guidance. That kind of strength doesn't come overnight. It comes through consistent time in the Word, choosing the Spirit over your emotions day after day, and obeying what God has already written before you ask Him for new direction. I'm still growing. I'm still being renewed. But I can tell you from experience — a strong spirit changes everything. Your decisions get clearer. Your peace gets deeper. Your life starts lining up with God's blessing. That's what He has for you. Let's keep developing together.
Father, I commit to developing my spirit — through Your Word, through worship, through obedience. Make me strong on the inside so I can be trusted with Your guidance on the outside.
You Were Known Before You Were Born
Jeremiah 1:5 — "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations."
I want you to sit with this truth for a moment — God knew you before your first breath. Before your parents held you, before your name was chosen, God had already marked you with purpose. This isn't just poetry. This is a declaration that your life carries divine intention woven into it from eternity. I've seen people wander for years wondering if they matter, if they have a purpose. Friend, you do. The God who formed galaxies formed you — specifically, intentionally, lovingly. Your calling isn't an afterthought. It's not something you have to manufacture or chase down in your own strength. It was placed inside you before you arrived here. This week, I want you to begin to believe that. Not as a nice idea — but as a rock-solid reality that changes how you see yourself every single morning.
Father, thank You that You knew me before I took my first breath. Help me to believe today that my life carries real purpose that You designed. Open my eyes to see myself the way You see me. Amen.
Your Calling Is Irrevocable
Romans 11:29 — "For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable."
Here's something that blesses me every time I think about it — God doesn't take back His calling on your life. It doesn't expire. It doesn't get cancelled because you made a mistake, took a wrong turn, or wasted some years. The gifts and callings of God are irrevocable. I think about Smith Wigglesworth, who didn't fully step into his calling until he was 58 years old. God used his next 30 years powerfully. Maybe you feel like you've missed your window. Maybe life has knocked you sideways and you've wondered if God moved on without you. He hasn't. He's still standing at the door of your destiny saying, "Come on — let's go." The calling is still there. It's still real. The question isn't whether God is faithful. He is. The question is whether today you'll say yes and begin moving toward what He put inside you.
Lord, thank You that Your calling on my life never expires. I repent for the times I've believed the lie that I've missed my chance. Today I say yes to You again — lead me forward. Amen.
The God Within You Is Leading You
1 Corinthians 6:19 — "Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?"
I love reminding people of this — you are not empty. If you're born again, the Holy Spirit lives inside you right now. Your body is literally the house of God's Spirit. Think about what that means for guidance. You don't have to look for some sign in the sky or wait for a dramatic thunderclap moment. The same Spirit who hovered over creation, the same Spirit who led the children of Israel with a pillar of cloud and fire, now lives inside your spirit. He's already there. The cloud has moved inside. I used to look everywhere for direction, but I've learned that the most reliable compass I carry is the Holy Spirit living within me. The key isn't finding Him — He's already found you. The key is learning to quiet yourself enough to follow what He's already been saying on the inside.
Holy Spirit, I acknowledge that You live inside me and I'm grateful. Teach me to quiet my mind and my emotions so I can hear what You've already been saying in my spirit. I trust You to lead me. Amen.
Praying the Mystery Into Clarity
Romans 8:26 — "Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."
Honestly, one of the most freeing scriptures I've ever read is this one — because it admits something we all feel but rarely say out loud. We don't always know how to pray. We don't always know what we need. We can't always see what's coming or what step to take next. And God says — that's okay, because the Holy Spirit will step in and pray what you cannot. This is why praying in the Spirit is not optional for me. It's oxygen. When I was wrestling with leaving my career and stepping into ministry, I didn't have all the answers. But as I prayed in the Holy Ghost, hour after hour, week after week, the mystery slowly became clarity. What I couldn't see in my mind became clear in my spirit. That same process is available to you. What feels confusing right now can become clear as you give the Spirit time and space to pray it through you.
Father, I admit I don't always know how to pray or what I need. Holy Spirit, step in and intercede for me today — pray what I cannot pray and reveal what I cannot yet see. I trust You with the mystery. Amen.
Separated and Sent
Galatians 1:15 — "But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb and called me through His grace..."
Paul wrote these words after years of running in the wrong direction. He was a persecutor of the church before he became one of its greatest voices. And yet he looked back and said — God separated me for this before I was even born. That is stunning. It means no season of wandering cancels the original call. It means grace doesn't just save you — it activates what was placed in you from the very beginning. As I wrap up this week, I want you to hear this clearly: God has separated you for something. Your life is not random. Your gifts are not accidents. Your story — even the messy chapters — is being woven into something He planned before time began. Don't waste another day wondering if you have a purpose. You do. Now the great quest of your life is to discover it, step into it, and fulfill it by the power of the Holy Ghost.
Lord, thank You for separating me and calling me by Your grace. I don't want to stand before You one day with a life full of things You never asked me to do. Lead me by Your Spirit into everything You prepared for me. Amen.
