Clothed With Power From On High
Life is a power contest, and God wants you to win every battle. In my message this Pentecostal Sunday, I shared that Jesus's command to "tarry until you are clothed with power from on high" is not just ancient history — it is a living invitation for every believer today. I talked about how praying in the Holy Spirit is one of the most powerful and practical tools God has given us, because it connects our spirit directly to His Spirit, bypassing our emotions and flesh. The Holy Spirit is our helper, our strengthener, and our guide, and when we tap into Him through prayer, we become clothed in a power that is greater than any obstacle, habit, or attack the enemy can throw at us.

Think about a time you felt completely unprepared for something — a job interview, a hard conversation, a new challenge — and someone or something showed up at just the right moment to help you through it. What happened, and how did it feel?
4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Question 1 — Opening the Conversation In my message I said that life is fundamentally a power contest, and that God has given us access to His power through the Holy Spirit. When you hear the phrase "clothed with power from on high," what image or feeling does that stir up in you? Does it feel exciting, distant, confusing, or something else — and why?
Question 2 — Getting Personal with Scripture Acts 1:8 says, "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you." I talked about how so many believers are living below the level of power God intended for them — caught in negative cycles, emotional roller coasters, and recurring struggles. Without naming anyone else, can you identify an area of your own life where you sense you have been relying on your own strength rather than the Holy Spirit's? What does that look like day to day?
Question 3 — Digging Into the Word First Corinthians 14:4 says that the person who prays in a tongue "edifies himself" — builds himself up. I described this as God transferring strength directly to your spirit, like getting caught in a spiritual jet stream. What does "being spiritually strong" actually look like in practical, everyday life? How is that different from simply being emotionally positive or mentally disciplined?
Question 4 — The Challenge of the Price I was pretty honest in this message — I said the Holy Spirit won't pray for you, He will pray with you. And I said God will give you what you give Him. That can feel confronting. Do you think most believers, including yourself, genuinely believe that extended time in prayer and the Spirit produces real, tangible results? What has helped or hindered you from making that investment? What fears or doubts come up?
Question 5 — Cooperating With God I referenced 1 Corinthians 6:1, where Paul describes us as co-workers with God — partners in what He is doing. That means we have a part to play. Thinking about your own walk with God right now, what is one area where you sense the Holy Spirit has been prompting you to cooperate with Him, but your flesh, your emotions, or your schedule has been pushing back? What would it look like to say yes to that this week?
Question 6 — Looking Outward I shared that it takes a free person to free another person — that we cannot be a light to a hurting world if we are still living in our own darkness. Who in your life right now — a family member, a coworker, a neighbor — is clearly hurting and needs someone walking in the Spirit's power to show up for them? What is one thing the Holy Spirit might be asking you to do for that person?
5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE
This Week's Challenge — Stretch Your Prayer Time by 15 Minutes
Pick three days this week and set aside 15 more minutes of prayer than you normally would. During that extra time, do something intentional: if you pray in the Spirit, use that time to do so quietly and without distraction. If you have not yet received that gift, use those 15 minutes to pray out loud, honestly, asking the Holy Spirit to help you, strengthen you, and make His presence real to you. Keep it simple — find a quiet place, put your phone face down, and give God those minutes without watching the clock. At your next small group meeting, come ready to share what, if anything, shifted during those times.
6. PRAYER POINTS
1. Hunger for the Holy Spirit Pray together that every person in your group develops a genuine, growing hunger to be clothed with the Spirit's power — not just to know about it intellectually, but to experience it personally and consistently.
2. Breaking Negative Cycles Pray specifically for areas where people in your group, or their loved ones, are stuck in cycles of anger, depression, fear, or defeat. Ask the Holy Spirit, the great helper, to bring His supernatural strength to bear on those exact situations this week.
3. Boldness to Live It Out Pray for courage — the kind I needed when that coworker pointed her finger at me and asked if I spoke in tongues. Ask God to give your group the boldness to live openly as Spirit-filled believers, especially toward the hurting people in your lives who need to see the real thing.

You Were Made for More Than Getting By
Acts 1:8 — "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
I want to tell you something I've learned after decades of walking with God — He never designed you to simply survive. He designed you to be clothed with power from on high. When Jesus spoke these words in Acts 1:8, He wasn't offering power as a bonus feature for super-Christians. He was describing the normal Christian life. The word "endued" literally means to put clothes on. You're meant to wear heavenly garments every single day. Think about that. Before you face your Monday — your inbox, your difficult relationships, your financial pressure — God wants to dress you in His power. Not your own strength. Not your personality or your education. His power. Excellence, I've always said, is just taking the next step above where you were before. Start there today. You don't have to leap — just step forward dressed in what heaven has already provided for you.
Holy Spirit, I don't want to just get by today — I want to walk in the power You've already made available to me. Dress me in Your strength this morning. Let everything I do today reflect that I belong to You.
The Helper Is Already With You
John 16:13 — "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come."
I love this word Jesus used for the Holy Spirit — Paraklete. Helper. Advocate. Strengthener. Guide. Counselor. All wrapped up in one Person who lives inside you. When Jesus left this earth, He didn't leave us orphaned and confused. He sent Someone better — Someone who knows the end from the beginning, who knows the right choices before you make the wrong ones. I've learned personally that the Holy Spirit will help you make the right decisions in life if you let Him. I've seen Him protect me from the wrong relationships, the wrong paths, the wrong choices — not because I was so smart, but because I learned to slow down and listen. The trouble is, most of us give Him three minutes and then wonder why we can't hear Him clearly. He's not a vending machine God. He's a faithful companion who rewards those who genuinely seek His voice. He's already with you — let Him actually help you today.
Lord, I'm grateful I don't have to figure life out alone. Holy Spirit, I choose to lean on You today rather than my own understanding. Help me hear Your voice clearly and trust what You show me.
Building Yourself Up From the Inside Out
1 Corinthians 14:4 — "He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church."
Paul told the wildest, most chaotic church in the New Testament — the Corinthians — that he prayed in tongues more than all of them. Stop and think about that. This wasn't a quiet, tidy congregation. These were people who needed serious help. And yet Paul, who wrote two-thirds of the New Testament, pointed to praying in the Spirit as the source of his strength. The word "edifies" means to build up — like constructing a building, floor by floor. When you pray in the Holy Ghost, you are literally under spiritual construction. Your spirit gets stronger. Your faith gets bigger. Your peace gets deeper. I've seen it in my own life — when I've invested real time praying in the Spirit, the clarity that comes afterward is remarkable. Your mind gets quiet, your emotions settle, and suddenly you can see what you couldn't see before. Don't neglect this gift. It's your spiritual construction equipment — use it today.
Father, I don't want a weak, underdeveloped spirit. I want to be built up from the inside out by Your Holy Spirit. Help me value praying in the Spirit the way Paul did — as something precious, not embarrassing.
Direct Connection — No Signal Lost
1 Corinthians 14:2 — "For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries."
Here's something that still amazes me every time I think about it — when you pray in the Holy Ghost, you have a direct, unfiltered connection with Almighty God. Your spirit speaks to His Spirit. No interference. No static. No enemy intercepting the signal. The devil can hear your English prayers and work to counter them, but when you pray in the Spirit, the Bible says you're speaking mysteries — hidden secrets that even he cannot understand. That is a supernatural advantage. I've told our men in the Twelve — when you pray in the Spirit, God is praying the perfect prayer through you. Always in His will. Always in faith. Always aimed exactly where it needs to go. It's like handing your prayer list to Jesus Himself and saying, "You pray it." Why would you not use this? Today, remember — you have access to the most powerful communication line in existence. Pick it up and use it.
Holy Spirit, thank You that when I run out of words, You never do. Thank You that You always know exactly what to pray. I open my mouth today and trust You to fill it with what heaven needs to say.
Walk After the Spirit — Every Single Day
Romans 8:6 — "For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."
I want to close this week with something deeply practical, because I'm not interested in great theology that doesn't change how you live on a Friday afternoon. Romans 8:6 gives us the clearest choice in all of Scripture — flesh or Spirit. Death or life. Chaos or peace. I've watched people wrestle for years with anger, broken cycles, poor decisions, and constant defeat. And so often the missing piece isn't more counseling or more information — it's more time in the Spirit. When you pray in the Holy Ghost consistently, your flesh gets quieter. Your spirit gets louder. The things that used to control you start losing their grip. I've said it all week and I'll say it one more time — you were made to be clothed with power from on high. Not someday. Now. Don't end this week defeated. End it on your knees, in the Spirit, strong. The Holy Ghost is ready if you are.
Lord, I choose the Spirit over the flesh today. I'm tired of living beneath what You've already paid for me to have. Fill me fresh right now, and let this weekend be different because of it.
