Ev. Marcus Joyner · 2026-10-13

Joy is not a feeling that comes and goes with your circumstances, it's a force that determines your victory. "How to Have Joy in a Wicked World"

Message by Ev. Marcus Joyner

1. SERMON RECAP

Evangelist Marcus Joyner opened with James 1:2-4, challenging the group to understand that joy is not simply a pleasant emotion but the most powerful force available to believers when the enemy attacks. He made the bold declaration that if the devil cannot take your joy, he cannot take your victory, grounding this truth in Isaiah 12:3, which connects joy directly to drawing from the wells of salvation. He also identified insecurity and negativity as the primary hindrances to joy, and called believers to fast from comparison, protect their peace, and position themselves in God's presence where fullness of joy is found.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

James 1:2-4 (NKJV)

"My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing."

3. ICE BREAKER

What is one thing, completely silly or ordinary, that never fails to make you laugh or put a smile on your face?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Question 1 Ev. Marcus declared that joy is the most important force a believer can have when under attack, and that everything a person needs can be received through joy, including healing, breakthrough, and favor, based on Isaiah 12:3. Does that idea challenge or encourage you, and why? Have you ever experienced a moment where choosing joy seemed to actually shift something in your circumstances?

Question 2 He pointed to Eve in the Garden of Eden as an example of how insecurity and comparison can quietly steal joy. The enemy got her to fix her eyes on the one thing she lacked rather than everything she already had. Where in your own life do you notice the pull of comparison or FOMO, and how has that affected your sense of joy or contentment?

Question 3 Ev. Marcus shared from Philippians 4:11, where Paul says he learned to be content in whatever state he found himself. He emphasized that contentment is not passive resignation but active stewardship, using his own story of caring well for a home he was renting while believing God for something greater. What does healthy contentment look like in a season where you are still waiting for something you have prayed and believed for?

Question 4 He challenged the group to do an honest audit of anything in their daily life that is quietly draining their joy, whether that is social media, certain relationships, or habitual negativity. What did that idea stir up in you personally? Are there habits or inputs in your life right now that you know are working against your joy, even if they seem harmless?

Question 5 Ev. Marcus referenced Hebrews 12:2, noting that even on the cross, Jesus endured by keeping his eyes fixed on the joy set before him and refusing every distraction. What does it look like practically, in the middle of a real and painful trial, to do what Jesus did and keep your focus on the joy ahead rather than the weight of the present moment?

Question 6 He closed by pointing to the truth that in God's presence there is fullness of joy, and encouraged the group to get under what he called the spout where the glory comes out, whether through worship, the Word, revival gatherings, or Spirit-filled community. Which of those access points to joy do you feel most disconnected from right now, and what is one honest reason why?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, each group member is challenged to conduct a personal joy audit on one specific area of daily life, whether it is screen time, a recurring negative conversation, or a comparison habit, and to replace that one thing with a deliberate five to ten minute encounter with God through worship or Scripture reading each day. At the next group meeting, members should come ready to share what they noticed in their mood, their faith, and their outlook by the end of the week.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each group member would experience a genuine and personal encounter with the presence of God this week, and that fullness of joy would be the real result of that encounter, not just an emotion but a spiritual strength that holds them steady.

  • Pray for anyone in the group who is in the middle of a trial right now, whether a health concern, a financial pressure, a relational wound, or an unanswered prayer, that they would receive the grace to count it all joy and to trust that the testing of their faith is producing something lasting and good.

  • Pray for the discipline and courage to fast from negativity, specifically that each person would have clarity about what needs to be set aside and the willpower to actually do it, trusting that protecting their joy is protecting their victory.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Isaiah 12:3 (NKJV)

"Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation."

Count It All Joy

James 1:2-3 — "My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience."

I want to start this week by asking you something honest. When trouble showed up last week, what was your first response? Was it joy, or did you spiral? I get it. Counting something "all joy" when it hurts feels almost impossible. But James is not asking us to pretend the trial is not real. He is asking us to look past it. The trial is not the destination. The trial is the road. And that road leads somewhere good. I have watched this in my own life. When my son faced serious health problems, the first time we were shaken. But by the second time, we had learned something. The devil always fails. Endurance grows in the hard place. Faith gets stronger under pressure. Whatever is pressing against you right now, it is not the end of your story. Count it all joy.

Lord, I choose today to count this as joy, even when it does not feel like it. Remind me that you are working in what I cannot see. I trust you with this.

Write down one trial you are facing and, next to it, write one thing God is building in you through it.

Everything You Need Is Found in Joy

Isaiah 12:3 — "With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation."

I said this on Tuesday and I meant every word of it. Everything you need can be found in joy. Your healing, your breakthrough, your peace, your provision — all of it is accessible through joy. This verse is remarkable because it does not say you draw water by striving or by worrying or by figuring it all out. It says with joy. That means joy is not just an emotion. It is a spiritual access point. It is the bucket you drop into the well. When you are full of joy, you are positioned to receive from God. That is why the enemy works so hard to steal it. He knows that a joyless believer is a believer who has stopped drawing. Do not let him shut you off from what God has already made available to you. The well is still full. Pick up your bucket today.

Father, restore my joy so I can draw from everything you have already provided. I do not want to stand next to the well empty-handed. Fill me today.

Spend five minutes in worship before you open your phone this morning, letting joy be the first thing you reach for.
Wednesday

Be Content With What You Have

Philippians 4:11 — "Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned, in whatever state I am, to be content."

Contentment is not giving up on your dreams. Contentment is refusing to let the enemy use what you do not have to rob you of what you do have. Eve had everything in that garden. Everything. And still the enemy got her to fix her eyes on the one thing missing. That is still his oldest trick. I have watched it in my own life. When I was doom-scrolling through social media, I was not happier. I was just more aware of what other people had. I had to do an audit. You may need to do the same. Paul says contentment is something he learned. That means it is a practice, not just a personality trait. You can learn it too. Be a good steward of what God has placed in your hands right now, and watch how that faithfulness opens the door to what comes next.

God, teach me contentment the way Paul learned it. Help me to be a faithful steward of what you have already given me and to stop measuring my life against someone else's highlight reel.

Identify one area of your life where comparison has been stealing your joy and intentionally thank God for what you already have in that area.

In His Presence Is Fullness of Joy

Hebrews 12:2 — "Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."

Even on the cross, Jesus kept his eyes on the joy ahead. I find that staggering. He was not in denial about the pain. He endured it. But he refused to let the pain be the final thing his eyes rested on. He fixed his gaze on the joy set before him and that kept him going. That is the model for us. When life gets heavy, we do not pretend it is light. We fix our eyes on something greater. I have found that the quickest way to get back to joy is to get into his presence. Not a comedy show. Not a scroll through my phone. His presence. Because the Bible says in his presence is fullness of joy. You do not have to manufacture it or borrow it from someone else. You can get completely full just by coming to him. He is still the source.

Jesus, you endured the cross with your eyes on joy. Help me to fix my eyes on you today rather than on everything pressing in around me. I want your fullness, not just a small measure.

Take ten minutes today to sit quietly in worship or prayer with no agenda except to be in his presence and let joy come naturally.

You Shall Go Out With Joy

Isaiah 55:12 — "For you shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace; the mountains and the hills shall break forth into singing before you, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands."

I love this verse as a way to close out a week. You shall go out with joy. Not anxiety. Not dread. Not the weight of everything that went wrong this week. Joy. The enemy spent all week trying to find a foothold, trying to take something from you. But here is the truth I want to leave with you as you head into your weekend. If the devil could not take your joy, he could not take your victory. You are still standing. You are still believing. The hills are about to break into singing over your situation. The Bible is not describing a quiet, reserved kind of departure. It is describing something that looks like celebration. That is how God intends for you to move through this world. Not dragging yourself across the finish line, but going out with joy and being led forth in peace. That is your portion. Walk in it.

Lord, I receive this promise as mine. Let me leave this week and enter this weekend full of joy and led by your peace. Thank you that the devil failed again.

Before you go to bed tonight, say out loud three things God did for you this week, no matter how small, and thank him for each one.
