Awakening to Your Identity as a Recreated Spirit

Pastor Mirek Hufton · 2026-10-14

Most Christians know they've been born again, but few truly live like it. In this message, I walk through what it actually means to be a recreated spirit being with the divine nature of God living on the inside of you. This isn't just theology, it's the key to walking in faith, love, and real kingdom power every single day.

"Awakening to Your Identity as a Recreated Spirit"

Based on a message by Pastor Mirek Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Mirek Hufton opened with 2 Corinthians 5:17 and challenged the group to slow down and genuinely wrestle with what it means to be a new creation in Christ, rather than simply reciting familiar words without letting them take root. He taught that every born-again believer is first and foremost a spirit being who carries the divine nature and divine love of God on the inside, and that this spiritual identity is meant to govern the mind and body rather than the other way around. He called the group to stop living as "mere men," as Paul warned in 1 Corinthians 3, and to begin developing the inner spirit through the Word, prayer, and worship so that faith and love flow naturally into every area of daily life.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 20:27 (NKJV)

"The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart."

3. ICE BREAKER

Think of a time when you had a strong gut feeling or inner sense about a decision that turned out to be right. Without overthinking it, share that moment in one or two sentences. What did that experience feel like from the inside?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Question 1 — Identity Pastor Mirek emphasized that most believers know the phrase "new creation" but rarely stop to meditate on what it actually means for daily life. Why do you think familiar scriptures can lose their power to surprise or challenge us over time? What might it look like to read 2 Corinthians 5:17 as though you were encountering it for the very first time?

Question 2 — Spirit, Mind, and Body Pastor Mirek described a clear order in how God designed us to function: the spirit leads, the renewed mind follows, and the body comes under subjection. In practical, everyday terms, where do you find that order breaking down most often in your own life? What tends to get in the driver's seat instead?

Question 3 — The Lamp of the Lord He drew attention to Proverbs 20:27, which describes the human spirit as the lamp the Lord uses to search and illuminate a person from the inside. Pastor Mirek shared stories of being directed toward specific companies, ministry opportunities, and mission fields through what he called the inner witness of the spirit. How do you personally distinguish between the voice of your spirit, the reasoning of your mind, and the pull of your emotions? Is that distinction easy or difficult for you to make?

Question 4 — Feeding the Spirit Pastor Mirek was direct in saying that the spirit grows stronger through the Word of God, prayer, and worship, and that a spiritually underfed believer will consistently be overpowered by flesh-driven thinking and emotions. Looking honestly at your current week, what are you feeding more consistently, your spirit or your mind and body? What does that pattern reveal about your priorities?

Question 5 — Walking in Divine Love He argued that many of the most painful relational breakdowns in Christian life, including church conflict, family division, and broken friendships, happen because believers are not drawing on the agape love already placed in their spirits at the new birth. This love, he said, is not emotional but spiritual, and it shows up most clearly when circumstances make it costly to love well. Can you think of a relationship or situation in your life right now where tapping into that spiritual love, rather than relying on feelings, would change how you are responding?

Question 6 — Humility and the Flesh Pastor Mirek was unusually candid in sharing moments when he himself acted out of irritation, got short with people, and then went back to apologize, including to guests and his own staff. He made the point that the willingness to humble oneself and repent quickly is one of the clearest signs that the spirit is growing stronger than the flesh. How easy or difficult is it for you to apologize promptly when you know you have acted out of the flesh? What makes that simple act feel so costly?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

Before the group meets again, choose one specific moment each morning this week, right after waking up, to pause for two or three minutes before reaching for a phone or rehearsing the day's problems. During that pause, speak aloud one statement of faith over the day ahead, such as "This is a day God has prepared, and I am trusting Him for favor, direction, and His love to flow through me today." Keep a simple note in a journal or on a scrap of paper recording what, if anything, felt different about the days when you did this compared to the days when you skipped it. Come ready to share one honest observation with the group next week.

6. PRAYER POINTS

1. Growing Awareness of the Recreated Spirit Pray that each member of the group would move beyond head knowledge of being a new creation and into a lived, moment-by-moment awareness of the divine nature and divine life that God has placed within them.

2. Strength to Walk by the Spirit in Difficult Relationships Pray specifically for any situation in the group where flesh-driven responses, including anger, jealousy, fear, or pride, have been causing damage. Ask God to let the agape love already present in each believer's spirit rise up and govern those interactions this week.

3. Consistent Feeding of the Inner Man Pray for genuine hunger for the Word of God and for prayer, and ask the Holy Spirit to help each person guard those habits against the very real pull of busyness, comfort, and distraction.

7. MEMORY VERSE

John 6:47 (NKJV)

"Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life."

You Are More Than You Think You Are

1 John 4:4 — "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."

I want you to sit with something I said on Wednesday — you are a spirit being. Not mostly a spirit being. Not partially. That is your true identity. Your body is the house, but you are the one living inside it. When God breathed life into man, He made us in His own class. And when you were born again, He placed His very nature inside your spirit. That is not religious language. That is the most real thing about you. The problem is we spend so much time feeding our bodies and our minds that our spirits stay underdeveloped, like a muscle that never gets used. Today I want you to start right here — with a fresh awareness that the same God who created everything is living inside you right now. That changes everything, if you let it.

Father, help me to truly believe today that You live inside me. I do not want to gloss over that truth anymore. Make it real to me in a way that changes how I walk through this day.

Write the words "I am a spirit being" somewhere you will see them throughout the day — a sticky note, your phone wallpaper, your journal — and pause each time you see it to let it sink in.

Let Your Spirit Lead the Way

Proverbs 20:27 — "The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart."

On Wednesday I talked about how God does not primarily speak to your mind or your body — He speaks to your spirit. Your spirit is the lamp He uses to illuminate the path ahead of you. I told the story of how I was directed to a company I kept seeing advertised, and how that one prompting of the spirit opened doors to Africa, to ministry, to things I could never have planned with my natural mind. That was not strategy. That was God to my spirit. You have had those moments too — a quiet knowing, a pull in a direction that logic could not fully explain. That is your spirit picking up on something your mind cannot access on its own. The question is whether you are trained to notice it. Feed your spirit with the Word, pray, worship, and you will hear it more clearly.

Lord, I want to be someone who recognizes Your voice when You speak to my spirit. Train my inner man to be sensitive to Your leading, and give me the courage to act on what I hear.

Before making any decision today, however small, pause for thirty seconds and ask yourself, "What does my spirit say about this?" Practice the habit of checking in with your inner man.
Wednesday

The Word That Goes Straight to Your Spirit

John 6:63 — "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life."

I said on Wednesday that when the Word is taught, the power of God is present. I quoted Luke 5, where Jesus was simply teaching and the power of the Lord was present to heal — He had not laid hands on anyone yet. That is not a coincidence. The Word of God is not just information. Jesus said it plainly — His words are spirit, and they are life. That means when you open this book and read it, something is happening in your spirit that your mind cannot fully measure. It is why I told you to become a wordaholic. It is why my daughter read the entire Bible through in ninety days. Not as a religious exercise, but as a feeding of the spirit man. The more Word you take in, the stronger your spirit becomes, and the more clearly that lamp inside you burns.

Jesus, Your words are spirit and life, and I need both today. Help me to come to Scripture not just as a duty but as a hungry person who needs to be fed. Let what I read go deep into my spirit.

Set aside fifteen uninterrupted minutes today to read the Bible — no phone, no background noise. Read slowly and let the words settle. Even one chapter read with full attention is worth more than ten chapters skimmed.
Thursday

Walk in the Spirit and Leave the Flesh Behind

Galatians 5:16 — "I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh."

I want to be honest with you about something I shared on Wednesday. I talked about moments when I have gotten into the flesh — being short with people, getting irritated, and then having to go back and apologize. I do not tell you that to be entertaining. I tell you because the walk in the Spirit is a real daily discipline, and none of us have fully arrived. But here is what I know — the stronger your spirit is, the quicker you are to catch yourself. You are quicker to repent, quicker to humble yourself, quicker to make it right. The flesh has many faces: jealousy, irritability, selfishness, anxiety. But when your spirit is developed, it begins to put a chokehold on those things. You do not conquer the flesh by trying harder with your mind. You conquer it by walking in the Spirit. That is God's design and it works.

Father, I recognize the places where my flesh still runs the show. I am asking You today to strengthen my spirit so it leads the way. Where I have been quick to react in the flesh, help me to stop, breathe, and listen to my spirit first.

Identify one area of your life where the flesh tends to win — a reaction, a habit, a thought pattern — and today, when it rises up, say out loud, "I walk in the Spirit." Then pause before responding.
Friday

Offer Yourself and Start Fresh Every Morning

Romans 12:1 — "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service."

I talked on Wednesday about how the way you start your day sets the temperature for everything that follows. If you wake up and immediately rehearse everything that is wrong — you are tired, someone owes you a call you do not want to make, something is unresolved — you will carry all of that into your day. But if you start in faith, offering yourself to God, declaring that this is going to be a day of favor and trust and expectation, something shifts. Paul says presenting yourself is your reasonable service. It is not radical. It is just what makes sense given everything God has done for you. Your spirit has been recreated. The divine life of God is in you. So wake up and act like it. Give God your day before the world gets to it. That one daily decision will change the quality of your entire life if you stick with it.

Lord, I give You today before anything else gets a claim on it. I choose faith over anxiety, trust over worry, and Your nature over my flesh. Let this day be lived from the inside out.

Tomorrow morning, before you check your phone, speak these words out loud: "This is a day of favor, faith, and the blessing of God. I offer myself to You today." Make it the first thing out of your mouth.
