How to Receive Guidance from God

How to Receive Guidance from God, Part 2

Pastor Mirek Hufton · 2020-03-08

God has designed every believer for a life of prosperity, success, and blessing, but walking in that blessing requires being led by His Spirit. In this message, Pastor Mirek Hufton drives home a crucial truth: you cannot be safely guided by your spirit until your spirit is saturated with God's Word. Drawing from his own early days in business, launching job sites with sixteen employees, operating on enthusiasm rather than wisdom, and learning hard lessons, Pastor Hufton illustrates what happens when we run full speed without listening to God's direction first. The key insight: your spirit and your emotions are dangerously close, and only the Word of God can accurately separate them (Hebrews 4:12). A word-starved spirit is a weak, unreliable guide. But when God's Word penetrates deeply, as Proverbs 4:20-23 promises, it brings life, health, and clarity to your innermost being. The bottom line: Before you can be led by the Spirit, you must be rooted in the Word.

"How to Receive Guidance from God, Part 2"

Pastor Mirek Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

In this message, I challenged us to understand that being led by God is the number one priority for every believer — and that it starts with feeding and strengthening our spirit through the Word of God. Just like a physical body grows from infancy to maturity, our spirit man can be developed, trained, and strengthened until it becomes a reliable guide for our lives. The key truth I want you to hold onto is this: you cannot expect to hear the unknown will of God if you are not obeying the known Word of God.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 4:20-22 (The Passion Translation)

"Listen carefully, my dear child, to everything that I teach you, and pay attention to all that I have to say. Fill your thoughts with my words until they penetrate deep into your spirit. Then as you unwrap my words, they will impart true life and radiant health into the very core of your being."

3. ICE BREAKER

Think of a time you ignored good directions — from a GPS, a map, or another person — and ended up completely lost or going the wrong way. What happened, and what did you learn from it?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Getting Started I shared that God genuinely wants to guide every believer — not just pastors or "super spiritual" people. How does it change the way you approach your daily decisions when you really believe God is personally interested in directing your life?

2. Going Deeper on the Word I made the point that the written Word of God is our primary guide — even before prophetic words, feelings, or what seems logical. Can you share a time when Scripture gave you clear direction in a situation where your emotions or reasoning were pointing you a different way? What happened when you followed the Word?

3. Honest Reflection I said that a lot of the difficulties we go through are actually the result of our own choices made outside of God's guidance — not the devil's doing. How does taking personal responsibility for those moments, rather than placing blame elsewhere, actually free us to grow and move forward?

4. Strong Spirit vs. Weak Spirit I talked about how a weak spirit produces a weak inner voice that is easily drowned out by emotions, circumstances, and outside pressure. What are some practical habits — beyond just Sunday morning — that you think would genuinely strengthen your spirit man throughout the week?

5. Soul vs. Spirit I mentioned that our soul (emotions, mind, will) and our spirit are very close together and can feel almost identical — and that only the Word of God can truly divide them (Hebrews 4:12). Have you ever made a decision you thought was Spirit-led but it turned out to be emotionally driven? How can we help each other discern the difference in our small group?

6. Obeying the Known Will I said it plainly: if you won't obey the known Word of God, you have no basis for expecting to receive the unknown will of God. Which area of your life right now — relationships, work, finances, family — do you feel God has already given clear instruction through Scripture that you may be waiting on a "special word" about instead of simply obeying?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, choose one area of your life where you need guidance — a decision, a relationship, a work situation, or a personal struggle. Before praying for a prophetic word or waiting for a feeling, spend 15 minutes each day searching Scripture specifically about that area. Write down every verse you find and ask: "What is God already saying to me through His written Word about this?" Bring what you discovered back to share with the group next week.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray for hungry spirits — that every person in your group develops a genuine, intense craving for the Word of God that goes beyond obligation and becomes a daily delight.

  • Pray for discernment — that God gives each member the ability to clearly distinguish between the voice of their spirit, their emotions, and outside influences when making decisions this week.

  • Pray for courage to obey — that where God has already spoken clearly through Scripture, every person in the group finds the strength to act on what they know, even when it is uncomfortable or counter to what they feel.

7. MEMORY VERSE

1 John 2:14b (NIV)

"I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one."

Leader's Note: Don't rush through the discussion questions — it's perfectly fine to spend the whole session on two or three of them if the conversation is rich and honest. Your job is to create a safe space where people can be real about where they are spiritually, not to cover every question on the page. You've got this!

God Really Wants to Guide You

Psalm 119:105 — "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

I want you to know something straight from my heart — God genuinely wants to guide you. He's not hiding His will like some cosmic treasure hunt designed to frustrate you. He's your Shepherd, and a good shepherd knows the way. I remember early in my faith walk, I was like a kid with a Shelby GT Mustang — pedal to the metal, full of excitement, zero wisdom. I hit trees. I made costly mistakes in business. But when I finally sat down and listened, God said, "Son, it works — but you've got to hear what I tell you to do." That's the part I was missing. You don't have to figure life out alone. He knows where every obstacle is. He sees what's coming before you do. Your job today is simply to slow down enough to hear Him.

Father, thank You for being a God who actually wants to show me the way. Help me to slow down today and trust that You are guiding me. I don't want to run ahead of You anymore.

Before making any decision today — big or small — pause for 60 seconds and simply ask God, "What do You want me to do here?"

Feed Your Spirit the Word

1 Peter 2:2 — "Like newborn babies, intensely crave the pure spiritual milk of God's word, for this milk will cause you to grow into maturity, fully nourished and strong for life."

Here's something I've learned the hard way — your spirit can only guide you accurately when it's been fed. When I came into the faith, I was spiritually newborn, full of enthusiasm but starving for the Word. A weak spirit has a weak voice. If you can barely hear your spirit, I want to ask you honestly — when did you last seriously feed it? The Bible says to *intensely crave* the Word. Not casually browse it. Not skim it when you feel like it. Crave it the way a newborn cries for milk. First John 2:14 says young men are strong because the Word of God abides in them. That Word living inside you builds spiritual muscle. And you're going to need that strength when life hits you hard and your emotions are screaming at you. Feed your spirit today.

Lord, give me a real hunger for Your Word — not just religious routine, but a genuine craving. Let Your Word go deep into my spirit and make me strong from the inside out.

Set aside 15 uninterrupted minutes today to read Scripture — no phone, no noise — and ask God to let it sink into your spirit, not just your mind.

Don't Be Led by Your Emotions

Romans 8:5 — "For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit."

I'll be completely honest with you — your emotions will lead you into the swamp every single time. I've watched people make life-altering decisions — quitting jobs, leaving churches, ending relationships — all because of how they *felt* in a moment. Feelings are real, but they are not reliable guides. God doesn't communicate through your feelings. He communicates through your spirit. And your spirit has to be stronger than your emotions for you to hear Him clearly. Part of spiritual maturity is learning to respond rather than react. When someone hurts me, my emotions want to write a very short check to their next ministry with a note attached — but my spirit says bless them, and bless them generously. That's not natural. That's supernatural. It only happens when your spirit is strong enough to overrule your flesh. Let's get there together.

Father, I confess I've made too many decisions based on feelings rather than Your Spirit. Strengthen me today to respond from the inside out, not the outside in.

When you feel a strong emotional reaction today, write it down and pray before you act on it — give your spirit the first word, not your feelings.

The Word and the Spirit Always Agree

Proverbs 4:20-22 — "Pay attention to all that I have to say. Fill your thoughts with my words until they penetrate deep into your spirit. Then as you unwrap my words they will impart true life and radiant health into the very core of your being."

One of the most important things I can tell you is this — the Word and the Spirit will never contradict each other. Never. If what you're feeling in your spirit contradicts what this Book plainly says, I promise you — it's not God. I've seen people justify disobeying Scripture because they "felt led." We use that phrase a lot in charismatic circles until we drift into real error. Here's my rule: before I chase after any spiritual impression, I check it against the Word. If it doesn't line up, I set it down. But when you marinate your spirit in Scripture — when you soak it, saturate it, let it penetrate — your spirit becomes calibrated to God's voice. You start to *know* the difference between His leading and your own thoughts. That's what we're after. A spirit so full of the Word that God can trust it to guide you accurately.

Lord, I want my spirit and Your Word to be in perfect agreement. Help me to fill my inner life with Scripture so that my hearing becomes sharp and trustworthy.

Find one scripture today that speaks directly to a situation you're facing and declare it out loud three times — let the Word get into your spirit, not just your mind.

A Strong Spirit for the Journey Ahead

Ephesians 4:23-24 — "Be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness."

I want to close this week with a challenge and an encouragement. You were born again as a spiritual baby — and that's perfectly fine. But you were never meant to *stay* a baby. God's design is that you grow into a mature believer with a strong spirit that can accurately hear His voice, resist the pull of your flesh, and walk confidently in His guidance. That kind of strength doesn't come overnight. It comes through consistent time in the Word, choosing the Spirit over your emotions day after day, and obeying what God has already written before you ask Him for new direction. I'm still growing. I'm still being renewed. But I can tell you from experience — a strong spirit changes everything. Your decisions get clearer. Your peace gets deeper. Your life starts lining up with God's blessing. That's what He has for you. Let's keep developing together.

Father, I commit to developing my spirit — through Your Word, through worship, through obedience. Make me strong on the inside so I can be trusted with Your guidance on the outside.

Write down one specific area of your life where you need God's guidance, then commit to spending time in the Word this weekend specifically asking Him to speak into that area.
