How To Receive Life From God's Word
Drawing from Proverbs 4, Pastor Mirek Hufton unpacks four practical steps to receiving life from God's Word, challenging the congregation to move beyond casual familiarity with Scripture toward genuine, life-transforming engagement. The central message: the Word of God is a living seed, and how we receive it determines whether it produces real change. Jesus declared, "My words are spirit and life" (John 6:63), this is no ordinary book. Yet Paul warns in Hebrews 5:12 that Christians can sit in church for years and remain spiritual infants, only able to digest spiritual milk, because they never truly paid attention. The key to everything, Pastor Mirek emphasized, is meekness, receiving the Word with humility rather than pride. He illustrated this powerfully using a horse: a 2,000-pound animal that could throw any rider at will, yet quietly submits. That yielded strength is meekness, and it's precisely the posture God requires before His Word can be implanted and bear fruit in our lives. Bottom line: Pride deflects the Word. Humility receives it. And the Word received always produces life.

1. SERMON RECAP
Pastor Mirek Hufton drew the congregation's attention to Proverbs 4:20-22, walking through four practical steps for receiving life from God's Word. He challenged the group to examine their attitude toward Scripture, arguing that the respect a person gives the Bible directly reflects the respect they give God. He emphasized that spiritual growth is not determined by how long someone has been a Christian, but by how consistently and humbly they receive the Word into their hearts.
2. KEY SCRIPTURE
Proverbs 4:20-22 (NKJV)
"My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh."
3. ICE BREAKER
Think back to a time when someone gave you advice you initially ignored but later realized was exactly right. What made you finally pay attention to it?
4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. Pastor Mirek stated that our attitude toward the Bible reflects our attitude toward God, saying "the respect you give this book is the respect you give God." Do you agree with that connection? What does your typical week reveal about how much importance you place on Scripture?
2. He described what he called "over-familiarity" with God's Word, where people hear a verse and immediately think, "I already know that," and close themselves off to receiving anything new from it. Have you ever experienced a familiar verse suddenly hitting you differently than it ever had before? What do you think changed in you that allowed that to happen?
3. Pastor Mirek pointed to Hebrews 5:12-13, where Paul expresses frustration that believers who should be teaching others are still only able to handle the "milk" of Scripture rather than solid food. What is the difference between milk-level and meat-level Christianity in practical, everyday terms? Where would you honestly place yourself on that spectrum right now?
4. James 1:21 calls believers to "receive with meekness the implanted word." Pastor Mirek described meekness not as weakness but as the fruit of power, using the image of a powerful horse that yields to its rider. What are the specific things, whether pride, a busy mind, past hurts, or distraction, that make it hardest for you personally to receive the Word in that kind of humble, yielded posture?
5. He used the image of a "tipping point," describing how many believers keep straining toward breakthrough but stop just short because there is not enough of the Word built up inside them. Can you identify an area of your life right now where you sense God is asking you to press further into His Word rather than pulling back? What would pressing in actually look like for you?
6. Pastor Mirek drew a clear line between the length of time someone has been a Christian and their actual spiritual maturity, saying a two-year believer who is consistently in the Word can outgrow a twenty-year believer who is not. What habits or rhythms, whether personal Bible reading, group study, memorization, or something else, have made the biggest difference in your own spiritual growth? What has gotten in the way of those habits?
5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE
This week, choose one passage of Scripture that is relevant to a specific challenge you are currently facing. Read it every day for seven days, but each time you read it, approach it as though you have never seen it before. Come to your next group meeting ready to share one thing that became clearer or more personal to you through that repeated, unhurried reading.
6. PRAYER POINTS
-
Ask God to reveal any areas of pride or over-familiarity that have caused group members to stop truly listening to His Word, and to replace that pride with a teachable, childlike spirit.
-
Pray specifically for each person to identify their own "tipping point" area, the place where consistent time in Scripture could produce the breakthrough they have been pressing toward.
-
Ask the Holy Spirit to make the Word alive and active in the daily lives of every group member this week, just as Jesus promised in John 6:63, so that it becomes not merely information but genuine spirit and life to them.
7. MEMORY VERSE
James 1:21b (NKJV)
"Receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls."
Daily Devotional
This Book Is Alive
John 6:63 — "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life."
I want to be honest with you this morning — I'm guilty of picking up this Bible sometimes like it's just another book. But it isn't. It was birthed not by time but by eternity. When Jesus said His words are spirit and life, He meant something radical: every time you open these pages, you're not just reading ink on paper. You're encountering the living God. You are a spiritual being first. You live in a body, yes, but your spirit hungers for something your Netflix queue and your coffee cannot satisfy. Only the Word of God feeds that deep place. I've watched people's lives elevate — genuinely elevate — when they started treating this book with reverence. The more you get into it, the more it gets into you. And when it gets into you, things change. That's not motivational talk. That's the promise of heaven itself.
Lord, forgive me for treating Your Word like it's ordinary. Open my eyes this week to see that these pages carry eternity in them. Let me come hungry every single time I open them.
Pay Attention
Proverbs 4:20 — "My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings."
I'll tell you something I've noticed from standing at the front of a room for years — I can tell when someone has checked out. The body shifts. The eyes glaze. And I think to myself, imagine how God must feel. He's speaking through His Word constantly, but we treat it like background noise. We're designing the backyard extension in our heads while eternity is being preached. Giving attention to God's Word is an act of honour. Our attitude toward this book reflects our attitude toward God — nothing more, nothing less. The respect you give this book is the respect you give God. That's not meant to condemn you; it's meant to wake you up. Because here's what I know: there's a tipping point coming in your life. You're closer than you think. But you've got to keep pressing in just a little further. One more verse. One more chapter. Don't stop now.
God, I don't want to be someone who hears but never really listens. Quiet the noise in my mind today and help me give You my full attention. You deserve nothing less.
Still Growing
Hebrews 5:12 — "For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food."
I love this passage because it's Paul being completely unfiltered. He's essentially saying, you've been around long enough to know better — why are you still on baby food? The length of time you've sat in a church pew has absolutely nothing to do with your spiritual maturity. I've seen two-year Christians outrun twenty-year Christians because they were hungry and in the Word every single day. And I've watched people get offended and walk out the door over the smallest things after decades in church. That's milk behaviour. Meat is loving people who've hurt you. Meat is staying when things get hard. Meat is bringing your body under discipline when everything in you wants to do otherwise. I'm not pointing fingers — I preach to myself first. But today, ask yourself honestly: am I growing, or have I just been attending?
Father, I don't want to plateau. Show me where I've been coasting on milk when You've been trying to feed me something stronger. I want to grow up in You.
Lay It Down First
James 1:21 — "Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls."
Before the Word can get in, something's got to come out. James makes this so clear — you can't receive with full hands. Malice, selfishness, the constant need to be first, the overflow of me-centred living — it all creates a hard surface where the seed of God's Word just bounces off. I've said it before and I'll say it again: pride is our downfall and it's always camouflaged. It whispers, "I already know this," and suddenly nothing new can reach you. But meekness — real meekness — is not weakness. It's power under control. Jesus Himself said, "I am meek and lowly of heart." He had all of heaven at His disposal and chose humility. When you lay down your defences and your know-it-all armour, you become good soil. And good soil? Good soil produces a harvest you cannot imagine.
Lord, I lay down my pride right now. Show me where my hands are too full of my own opinions to receive what You want to give me. Make me good ground today.
Life Is Coming
Proverbs 4:22 — "For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh."
I want to end our week with this promise sitting big in your spirit — life is coming. Whatever death has been serving you this week, whether it's brokenness, sickness, lack, loneliness, or a business that won't move — God's Word carries the antidote. Not as a magic formula you recite, but as a living seed that, when received into good ground with humility and attention, reproduces the very life of Christ in you. That's what "implanted word" means — it grows from the inside out. I think about my daughter Tessa deciding she needed more Word and committing to read the Bible four times in one year. That kind of hunger is contagious. It challenged me. Let it challenge you. You are closer to your breakthrough than you think. The tipping point is just ahead. Give this Word the attention it deserves, receive it with meekness, and watch life come.
Father, thank You that Your Word carries life for every dead place in me. I receive it today — not just in my head but in my heart. Let it grow and produce everything You intended for my life.
