Godliness is Profitable Pt. 2
Key Scriptures: 1 Timothy 4:7-16; Psalm 91; Psalm 103; Matthew 23 Godliness isn't just spiritually right, it's practically profitable. Drawing from 1 Timothy 4, I showed that godliness carries the promise of blessing now, in this life, and in the life to come. Like a sound business investment, living for God produces a genuine return, in your mind, body, marriage, children, and eternal destiny. The central truth: a godly life is your greatest protection. Psalm 91 promises that those who dwell in God's presence find refuge, deliverance, and divine guidance. Sin, by contrast, opens doors to fear, spiritual oppression, and costly misdirection. I challenged our young people especially, flee youthful lusts, fill your life with right-doing, and pursue God so aggressively there's no room left for compromise. The memorable illustration: as a teenager, I pranked girls at a church retreat with M-80s on cigarette fuses, sneaking across a lake, planting them around the cabin, and escaping undetected. Funny then, dangerous in hindsight. When I gave my life fully to Christ, I got serious, no more double life. That total commitment changed everything. Godliness pays. Don't tolerate anything less.

1. I talked about how the word "exercise" in 1 Timothy 4:7 is the root word for gymnasium — it means to train. What does it look like practically to train yourself toward godliness, the same way someone trains for a sport or a fitness goal? What makes it hard to stay consistent?
2. I mentioned that a godly life brings divine protection — for your mind, your marriage, and your home — and that worry, for example, can open the door to spiritual oppression. Do you agree that the way we live affects our spiritual vulnerability? Where have you seen that play out, positively or negatively?
3. I shared from 1 Peter 3 about how a godly life can quietly influence — even win over — a spouse or family member who doesn't share your faith. Who in your life is watching how you live, whether you realize it or not? How does that awareness change anything for you?
4. I confessed some of my own "double life" moments before I fully surrendered — being a Christian by day and a troublemaker by night. Can you think of an area where you still tend to compartmentalize your faith — where the "Sunday version" and the "Tuesday version" of yourself look pretty different?
5. I said, "Sin is too expensive — it'll cost your faith, your peace of mind, and it'll allow the enemy a foothold." Do you think most Christians genuinely weigh the long-term cost of compromise, or do we tend to underestimate it? What helps you stay clear-eyed about that cost?
6. Psalm 91 promises incredible protection for those who dwell in the secret place — a life of real intimacy with God, not just religious routine. What does your personal time with God actually look like right now? What's one honest obstacle that keeps it from going deeper?
5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE
This week, choose one specific area where you've been giving yourself a pass — a habit, a thought pattern, a relationship dynamic, or a media intake — that you know quietly works against your godliness. Don't just identify it; take one concrete step to address it. That might mean deleting an app, having an honest conversation, setting a new boundary, or spending 15 minutes a day this week alone with God without music or noise, simply listening. Come back next week ready to share what you did and what happened.

For genuine godliness — Pray that each person in your group would move beyond religious routine into a life that is truly God-focused and God-pleasing, experiencing the real dividends that godliness produces.

The Profit You Never Expected
1 Timothy 4:8 — "For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come."
I want you to think about what it means that godliness is profitable not just in some things but in all things. When I look back over my own life, I can see how every time I chose to pursue God wholeheartedly, something in my world got better. My mind got clearer. My relationships got stronger. My faith grew sharper. It was not magic. It was the direct result of pointing my life toward God and staying there. This is not prosperity as the world defines it. This is the deep, settled blessing that comes when a person decides that what pleases God matters more than what pleases the flesh. You may not see the return immediately, but I promise you, the investment in a godly life pays dividends that no earthly portfolio ever could. Do not give up on the process. God is watching your faithfulness.
Father, I want to believe that my daily choices toward you actually matter. Help me to see godliness not as a burden but as a blessing and a protection over my life. I trust that you reward those who sincerely pursue you.
Your Life Is Somebody's Example
1 Corinthians 11:1 — "Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ."
I grew up watching my parents go all in for God. They were always at the front of the church, always the top givers, always the top goers. My father made bold decisions in faith that most people would never dare to make, and that example shaped me more than any sermon I ever heard. Here is what I need you to understand today. Whether you know it or not, somebody is watching your life. Your children are watching. Your unsaved relatives are watching. Your coworkers are watching. The question is not whether you will be an example. You already are one. The question is what kind. I am not asking you to be perfect. I have had to repent of things and make things right with people I love. But I am asking you to be faithful, transparent, and humble enough to keep going even when you stumble. That is the kind of example that changes lives.
Lord, make my life worth watching. Where I have fallen short, give me the humility to admit it and the grace to do better. Let the people closest to me see you clearly through the way I live.
Flee Before You Fall
2 Timothy 2:22 — "Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart."
The word flee does not mean hesitate and consider your options. It means get away fast. I have told people for years that the single greatest thing I did when I was young and single was fill my schedule so completely with things that mattered for God that I had no room left for the things that would have destroyed me. That was not accidental. That was a decision. I decided the enemy was not getting a foothold in my life through an open door I chose to leave unlocked. The devil's primary goal when he tempts you into sin is not just the sin itself. It is what the sin does to your faith afterward. It is the shame, the accusation, the distance you suddenly feel from God. You do not have to live that way. Fill your life with right doing. Pursue it aggressively. Make the righteous path so crowded with purpose that temptation cannot find a seat.
Father, I want to run hard after righteousness today and not toward the things that would slow me down. Strengthen me to flee anything that would damage my relationship with you and help me fill that space with something that truly counts.
Get Alone With God and Stay There
Psalm 91:1 — "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."
Some of the most important decisions I have ever made for this church and for my family did not come from a board meeting or a brainstorming session. They came from getting alone with God and waiting until he spoke clearly. I have driven up into the mountains, spent three days in prayer, and come down knowing exactly what God was saying even when the counsel around me was pointing somewhere else. The secret place is not a physical location. It is a posture of the heart. It is choosing to make God your first conversation and your last, to bring him the real questions, the hard decisions, and the fears you have not told anyone else. When you dwell there consistently, you begin to hear him more clearly. And when you hear him clearly, the protection that comes over your life is unlike anything you could manufacture on your own. Draw near. He is not far.
Lord, I want to know you in the secret place, not just in the public moments of worship. Teach me to dwell with you, to listen more than I speak, and to trust what I hear even when it does not match what the world around me is saying.
Godliness Is Your Armor
Ephesians 6:14 — "Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness."
I said it in the message and I will say it again here because it needs to land deep. The number one reason the enemy wants you to sin is not the sin itself. It is what that sin does to your faith. Once your faith is shaken, your prayers feel thin, your confidence before God shrinks, and suddenly the enemy has room to work. But when you are living a godly life, when you are doing right by people, when you are pursuing God with sincerity, it is like a hot stove. Nothing wants to land on it. The breastplate of righteousness is not just a metaphor. It is the daily practice of right doing, right being, living in a way that keeps you protected from misdirection, demonic attack, and the slow drift away from God that most people never see coming until they are already far from shore. Stay close. Stay godly. It is your greatest defense and your greatest blessing all at once.
Father, I put on your righteousness today not because I am perfect but because you have made me righteous through Christ. Help me to live that out in practical ways today so that my life stays protected and my faith stays strong.
