My Path To Total Victory
Many believers settle for a halfway victory, celebrating too soon and never possessing everything God has promised them. In this powerful message, Pastor Willie Russell uses the story of Joshua and the walls of Jericho to show that faith brings the wall down, but obedience is what secures the victory. If you're ready to stop living at halftime and start walking in everything God has for you, this message is for you.

"My Path To Total Victory" — Pastor Willie Russell
1. SERMON RECAP
Pastor Willie Russell opened with a memorable illustration about the 2017 Super Bowl, where the Atlanta Falcons led 28-3 at halftime yet ultimately lost, making the point that a partial lead is not the same as total victory. Using the stories of Joshua at Jericho, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace, and David's defeat of Goliath, Pastor Willie challenged the congregation to move beyond halftime celebrations and press toward the complete victory God has already promised. He reminded the group that faith activates the promise, but obedience is what secures it.
2. KEY SCRIPTURE
Isaiah 43:2 (NKJV)
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you."
3. ICE BREAKER
Think of a time you celebrated too early — a sports moment, a game, a personal goal — only to have things turn around unexpectedly. What happened, and how did it feel?
4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. Pastor Willie made a distinction between faith and obedience, saying that faith brought the walls of Jericho down, but obedience secured the victory. In your own experience, what is the difference between believing God for something and actually being obedient to what He is asking you to do to receive it? Where do you find that gap shows up most in your life?
2. Pastor Willie used the illustration of holding out ten dollars while two large men stood between the person and the money. What are some of the "large men" — the fears, doubts, or obstacles — that have made you hesitate to step fully into a promise God has spoken over your life? How have you responded when the path to the promise looked harder than expected?
3. Pastor Willie noted that when Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego went through the fiery furnace, King Nebuchadnezzar and those watching saw God clearly because of how the three men went through the fire. Can you think of a time when the way someone you knew handled a hard season caused you to see God more clearly? What was it about their response that pointed you toward God rather than away from Him?
4. Pastor Willie said that the promise of God's presence guarantees the provision of God's power. How does genuinely believing that God is present with you in a difficult situation change how you respond to it? Is there a current struggle in your life where you are finding it hard to trust that God is actually there?
5. He challenged the group not to "settle for okay," saying that many people embrace a half-time life — a car, a job, an apartment — and stop pressing for the total victory God intended. What does "total victory" look like in a specific area of your life right now? What would it mean to stop settling and start pressing toward the fullness of what God has promised in that area?
6. In closing, Pastor Willie pointed to David cutting off Goliath's head with the giant's own sword, saying there are things in our lives that need to be completely finished off, not just knocked down. What is one area — a habit, a mindset, a relationship pattern, a financial issue — where you have knocked the problem down before but have not yet fully cut the head off? What has kept you from finishing the job?
5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE
This week, identify one specific promise from Scripture that applies to an area of your life where you have been settling. Write it on a notecard or in your phone, place it somewhere you will see it every day, and identify one concrete, obedient action step you can take before next week's group meeting that moves you closer to that promise. Come prepared to share both the promise and the action step at the next gathering.
6. PRAYER POINTS
-
Ask God to give each group member the courage to move from faith that simply believes His promises to obedience that actively steps toward them, even when the path looks difficult or costly.
-
Pray for any group member currently in the middle of a "fiery furnace" season — a health challenge, financial pressure, grief, or broken relationship — that they would experience the tangible presence of God in the middle of that fire and that others around them would see God clearly through how they walk through it.
-
Ask the Lord to reveal any area where group members have settled for a halftime victory and to stir up in them a holy hunger for the total victory He has prepared for them.
7. MEMORY VERSE

The Wall Is Not the Victory
Hebrews 11:30 — "By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days."
On Sunday, I talked about the moment the walls of Jericho came down. The people had marched, believed, and shouted — and then the walls fell flat. That feels like the victory, doesn't it? But it was only the beginning. The fallen wall was not the prize. It was the access point. God had already said, "I have given you the city." The wall coming down simply opened the door for them to go in and take what God had already declared was theirs. I think about how often I celebrate a breakthrough and then stop moving. I shout over the open door but never walk through it. Faith brings the wall down, but obedience carries you into the promise. God is not raising people who stop at halftime. He is raising people who press all the way through to total victory.
Lord, thank You for every wall You have brought down in my life. Give me the courage to keep moving forward and not settle at the halfway point. I trust that You have already given me the victory.
The Promise Comes With Instructions
Numbers 31:53 — "You shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land and dwell in it, for I have given you the land to possess."
On Sunday, I was honest with you about how I read that passage. My eyes went straight to the part about possessing the land and skipped right over all the instructions God gave for how to get there. That is just how we are wired sometimes. We want the blessing without the battle. We want the possession without the process. But God has always worked this way — He speaks the promise and then lays out the path. His promises never change. They are always yes and amen. But He requires something from me. He wants to know what I am going to do with what He said. Total victory is not passive. It is not sitting back and waiting for God to do everything while I do nothing. It is hearing clearly, trusting fully, and then moving forward in obedience. The promise is sure. My response is the variable.
Father, forgive me for grabbing hold of Your promises while ignoring Your instructions. Help me to be as committed to the process as I am excited about the promise. I want to do my part.
God Is Already There
Isaiah 43:2 — "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you."
Notice that God does not say "if" you go through the fire. He says "when." That has always struck me. God is not surprised by the hard seasons. He already knew they were coming, and He already positioned Himself to be present in the middle of them. On Sunday, I shared that the promise of God's presence guarantees the provision of God's power. That means when I am in the middle of something painful or confusing, I am not in it alone. The problem is that when I am in the fire, I start looking around for God instead of trusting that He is already there. My emotions tell me He has left, but His Word says He will never leave or forsake me. Faith is choosing to believe what He said over what I feel. That is where total victory begins to take shape — in the fire, not after it.
Lord, I confess that I sometimes look for You in the hard times and struggle to find You because I am looking with my eyes instead of my faith. Remind me today that You are already there, right in the middle of it with me.
Let Them See God in You
Daniel 3:25 — "He answered and said, 'But I see four men unbound, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt, and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.'"
I love this moment. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown into a furnace so hot it killed the soldiers who threw them in. And yet, the king looked into that fire and saw four men walking around unbound. He saw God. He saw it because those three men did not panic, did not fold, and did not curse the situation they were in. How you go through the fire may be the very thing that allows someone else to see God. On Sunday, I shared something personal about losing our son. People were watching to see how we would respond. Would we get angry at God? Would we fall apart? We made a choice as a family to trust Him even when we did not understand. And people came back to us later and said they saw God in how we walked through it. Your trial has an audience. Carry it well.
God, when I am in the fire, help me to carry myself in a way that reflects Your presence in my life. Let someone else see You because of how I go through this season.
Cut the Head Off
1 Samuel 17:51 — "Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it."
David did not just knock Goliath down. He made sure it was finished. He took Goliath's own sword and cut his head off. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. That is total victory. On Sunday, I said there are things in your life you have been knocking down but not cutting off. You have been dealing with the symptoms but not destroying the root. Maybe it is debt you keep managing but never eliminating. Maybe it is a habit you keep reducing but never surrendering. Maybe it is a relationship that keeps pulling you backward. God is not calling you to manage your Goliath. He is calling you to defeat it. Take the same weapon the enemy has been using against you and use it to finish the fight. Stop playing around with the things that are trying to stop your destiny. Cut the head off, and walk into your total victory.
Lord, give me the boldness and the clarity to stop settling for partial victories. Show me what I need to fully cut off, and give me the strength to finish the fight.
