"The Horrors of Hell and Why It Matters" by Bill Wiese

1. SERMON RECAP

Bill Wiese shared a sobering account of an out-of-body vision he received on November 23, 1998, in which he experienced firsthand the very real and terrifying conditions of hell, grounding every detail in Scripture. He made clear that understanding the severity of hell is not meant to frighten believers without purpose, but to deepen their gratitude for salvation, sharpen their walk with God, and ignite their passion to reach the lost. He reminded the group that hell was never prepared for mankind but for the devil and his angels, and that Jesus went to the cross so that not one person has to go there.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Matthew 25:41 "Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels."

3. ICE BREAKER

What is one moment in your life when you narrowly avoided a serious consequence, and how did that close call change the way you thought about things afterward?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Question 1 — Appreciating Salvation Bill Wiese described conditions in hell including total darkness, isolation, physical torment, no water, no rest, and no hope of escape. He challenged the group to consider what Jesus actually rescued believers from. In what ways has hearing a detailed description of hell deepened or shifted your personal sense of gratitude for your salvation? Is it possible to be genuinely thankful for something you have never truly pictured losing?

Question 2 — Walking in the Fear of the Lord Bill Wiese pointed to Deuteronomy 6 and 17, explaining that the fear of the Lord means reading God's Word daily and obeying it daily, not going by personal opinion or feelings. He challenged the group that understanding how severe hell is should make a Christian unwilling to play around with sin or compromise the Word. Where in your daily life do you find it most tempting to let feelings or cultural pressure replace what Scripture actually says, and what does walking in genuine fear of the Lord look like in that specific area?

Question 3 — Passion for the Lost Bill Wiese referenced Bill Bright's observation that only two percent of Christians ever bother to witness, and he challenged the group that when believers truly grasp the severity of hell, their prayers for unsaved family and friends become far more fervent and specific. He described the difference between a casual prayer and getting on one's knees, fasting, and asking God to send laborers across a loved one's path. Who is one person in your life who does not yet know Jesus, and what has been the honest level of urgency in the way you have been praying and caring for that person?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, choose one unsaved person you care about and pray specifically for them every single day, using at least three concrete requests: that God would give them a dream or a vision, that He would send a believer across their path who they will listen to, and that He would soften their heart toward the gospel. Write that person's name somewhere visible, such as on a notecard by your bed or as a phone reminder, so the commitment does not fade by midweek.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each group member would carry a renewed and lasting sense of gratitude for the salvation Jesus purchased on the cross, and that this gratitude would show up in the everyday choices they make.
  • Pray that God would give every believer in the group a genuine, growing fear of the Lord that expresses itself in daily obedience to His Word rather than compromise with culture.
  • Pray by name for the unsaved people each group member identified, asking God to move on their hearts, send His people across their paths, and bring them into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ before it is too late.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Romans 10:9 "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."

Saved From Something Real

Hebrews 10:28 — "He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses."

On Sunday, I shared with you what I witnessed in hell — the heat, the darkness, the total absence of everything good. And I want to sit with you in that for a moment, not to frighten you, but to deepen your gratitude. So many of us say "Jesus saved me," and we mean it, but we have only a faint picture of what we were saved from. Salvation is not just a ticket punched or a prayer recited. It is rescue from a real, terrible, everlasting place. Hebrews warns us that despising God's truth carries weight — eternal weight. When I came back from that experience, the first thing I did was thank Jesus. Not out of duty, but out of overwhelming relief and love. Today, I want you to feel that same gratitude freshly. He went to the cross so you would never have to face what I saw.

Lord, forgive me for taking my salvation lightly. Today I want to thank you with my whole heart for what you rescued me from. Your grace is bigger than I ever realized.

Write down three specific things you are grateful Jesus saved you from, and read them aloud as a prayer of thanksgiving.

The Weight of What He Spared You

Psalms 88:4 — "I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength."

One of the things that shook me most on Sunday was realizing that in hell, there is no strength. Even the smallest movement requires enormous effort. Psalms 88:4 captures it — a man going down to the pit with nothing left. Here on earth, Acts 17:28 tells us that in Him we live and move and have our being. Even our ability to take a step comes from God. We rarely think about that. Every breath, every heartbeat, every ordinary Tuesday morning is a gift from a God who sustains you. When I understood that hell is the complete withdrawal of everything God provides, my appreciation for His presence in my daily life was transformed. I stopped walking past ordinary moments without noticing them. The fresh air outside your door today — that is God. The strength to get up this morning — that is God. Let that sink in.

Father, I confess I have taken your daily provision for granted. Thank you that in you I live and move and have my being. Help me to notice your hand in the ordinary moments today.

Pause three times today — morning, midday, and evening — and simply say aloud, "This moment is a gift from God."

Walking Straight Before a Holy God

Psalms 103:17 — "But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him."

On Sunday I shared that understanding hell drives us to walk in the fear of the Lord. Now, fear of the Lord is not cowering terror — it is deep reverence, the kind that makes you take His Word seriously every single day. Deuteronomy tells us that fearing God means reading His Word daily and obeying it daily. Not going by your feelings, not going by what the culture tells you is acceptable, but by what He actually says. In hell, Psalms 103 reminds us, there is no mercy — because mercy belongs to those who fear Him. That truth should make us want to walk carefully, not because we are earning anything, but because we love and respect the God who extended mercy to us. I do not want to play around with sin. I do not want to drift. The fear of the Lord keeps me close to Him, and that closeness is everything.

Lord, give me a fresh reverence for you today. I want to walk straight before you, not compromising your Word for the sake of comfort or convenience. Keep me close.

Read one passage of Scripture today and ask yourself honestly: am I actually obeying this, or just believing it in theory?

No Rest, No Peace — and Why That Matters for How I Pray

Revelation 14:11 — "And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night."

On Sunday I described the absolute restlessness of hell — no sleep, no peace, no quiet, ever. Revelation 14:11 is not poetry. It is a warning. And when I understood this, something changed in how I pray for people who do not know Jesus. I stopped offering polite little prayers and started crying out. If the people I love could end up in a place with no rest, no peace, no reprieve for all eternity, then a casual prayer is simply not enough. Bill Bright once noted that only two percent of Christians bother to witness. I think part of the reason is we do not truly grasp what is at stake. When the weight of eternity presses on you, you pray differently. You fast. You ask God to send laborers. You ask Him to give your loved ones a dream. The urgency becomes real, and your prayer life changes because of it.

Lord, break my heart for the people in my life who do not know you. I do not want to pray politely — I want to pray with urgency and faith. Show me who to intercede for today.

Choose one person in your life who does not know Jesus and spend five intentional minutes in focused, specific prayer for their salvation today.

Your Words, Your Choice, Your Eternity

Matthew 10:28 — "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell."

I closed Sunday's message by reminding everyone that God does not send people to hell — people choose it through their own words and decisions. Matthew 10:28 calls us to fear the One who holds eternity in His hands, not the things of this world that can only touch the body. The most sobering thing I know is this: one second after a person dies, it is too late. There are no second chances, no cavalry coming. That truth has kept me sharing this message for decades, even when I was uncomfortable doing it. God once told me that it is not about being comfortable — it is about being obedient. And so I ask you today: who in your circle needs to hear the gospel? You have a gift, a relationship, an access that I will never have. You can reach people I cannot. Do not wait. Your obedience today could change someone's eternity forever.

Lord, give me courage to be obedient even when it feels uncomfortable. Put someone specific on my heart today, and open a door for me to share your love with them. I want to be faithful with the time I have.

Reach out to one person today — a text, a call, an invitation to coffee — as a first step toward sharing the gospel with them.
