Developing A Heart After God

Developing A Heart After God, Part 2

Pastor Mirek Hufton · 2026-09-20

Living for yourself will always fall short of the life God designed for you. In Part 2 of this powerful series, Pastor Mirek Hufton walks through what it truly means to consecrate your life to God, surrendering your will, your body, and your future to the One who created you and bought you with a price. This message will challenge you to stop settling for a comfortable faith and start pursuing the fullness of your God-given destiny.

"Developing A Heart After God, Part 2" Pastor Mirek Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Mirek Hufton continued the series on developing a heart after God by grounding the message in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, the reminder that believers are not their own but have been bought with a price. He challenged the congregation to pursue a consecrated life — one that is genuinely set apart for God — by asking the daily question, "What will please God?" He drew from personal stories, Scripture, and the example of Jesus Himself to show that a heart after God is not a feeling but a consistent, yielded choice to obey God even when it goes against our own desires.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NKJV)

"Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's."

3. ICE BREAKER

Think of a time you did something that was genuinely inconvenient or uncomfortable for someone else's benefit — and it turned out to be worth it. What made you decide to do it, and how did it feel afterward?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Pastor Mirek pointed out that we live in a culture increasingly shaped by the idea that life is about pleasing ourselves, and that this mindset has crept into the church. Where do you notice that tension most in your own daily life — the pull between what pleases you and what pleases God?

2. He shared that Jesus said in John 8:29, "I always do those things that please Him," and that pleasing God is tied to obedience, service, and even staying silent when we want to speak. What does "pleasing God" look like in the ordinary, practical moments of your week — not just in church settings?

3. Pastor Mirek described the narrow way of Matthew 7 as the path that often requires doing what we do not naturally want to do, and he shared how obeying God in a situation he resisted — staying in the university dormitory instead of moving to an apartment — became one of the most fruitful seasons of his life. Has there been a time when obeying God cost you something in the short term but proved worthwhile later? What did that experience teach you about trust?

4. He drew from 2 Corinthians 7:1, which calls believers to cleanse themselves from all filthiness of flesh and spirit and to perfect holiness in the fear of God, and he connected this directly to consistent engagement with the Word of God. What honest obstacles keep your group members from spending consistent time in Scripture, and what has helped in seasons when that discipline was stronger?

5. Pastor Mirek referenced Proverbs 1:23, where God promises to pour out His Spirit and make His words known to those who turn at His rebuke. He described this as a chain reaction — turning, anointing, then revelation. How does your group understand the connection between receiving correction (from God, Scripture, or trusted people) and experiencing spiritual growth? Is that a welcome or uncomfortable part of the Christian life for you personally?

6. He closed with Solomon's conclusion in Ecclesiastes 12 — that the whole purpose of life is to fear God and keep His commandments — and he challenged the group to see their destiny as something that cannot be fully reached without a consecrated, yielded heart. What would it look like for you, in your specific season of life right now, to more fully say, "I am not my own"?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, identify one specific area of your daily routine where you know your choices tend to please yourself more than God — whether that is what you watch, how you speak, how you spend your time, or how you treat a particular person. Choose one concrete adjustment you can make every day this week, and write it down somewhere you will see it each morning. Come back next week ready to share honestly what that experience was like.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each group member would develop a genuine, daily hunger to please God rather than themselves, and that the Holy Spirit would make that desire stronger than the pull of self-interest.

  • Pray for a renewed commitment to the Word of God within the group — that Scripture would not feel like an obligation but like the cleansing, life-giving presence that Pastor Mirek described, washing away the buildup of worldliness that accumulates in everyday life.

  • Pray specifically that each person would have the courage to receive correction — from God, from Scripture, or from a trusted friend — without pride or resistance, and that the promise of Proverbs 1:23 would be fulfilled: that turning at God's rebuke would open the door to a fresh outpouring of His Spirit.

7. MEMORY VERSE

1 Thessalonians 4:1 (NKJV)

"Furthermore then we urge you, brethren, and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you actually do walk, that you excel still more."

You Are Not Your Own

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 — "Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? And you are not your own, for you are bought at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's."

On Sunday I opened with this verse because I believe it is the foundation of everything else. When you truly grasp that you do not belong to yourself, it changes how you wake up in the morning. It changes the decisions you make, the words you speak, and the directions you choose. You were purchased at the highest possible cost — the blood of Jesus Christ. That is not a transaction to take lightly. God is not asking you to perform for Him out of obligation. He is inviting you to live as someone who is deeply loved and intentionally owned by the King. When you start each day saying, "Lord, I belong to You," something shifts on the inside. Peace replaces pressure. Purpose replaces confusion. Let that truth settle deep in your heart today.

Father, remind me today that I belong to You. Help me to make choices that honor the price You paid for my life. I give You my body, my spirit, and my will today.

Before you get out of bed this morning, say out loud, "I am not my own. I belong to God." Let that be the first declaration of your day.

The Goal Is to Please Him

1 Thessalonians 4:1 — "You received from us how you ought to walk and to please God."

I want to ask you something honest today. When you make a decision, whose approval are you really seeking? On Sunday I talked about how easy it is to drift from pleasing God into pleasing people, and how that road will take you somewhere you never intended to go. Jesus set the standard clearly. He said in John 8:29, "I always do those things that please Him." That was not a burden to Jesus. It was the rhythm of His life. And I believe it can become the rhythm of yours. When I went back into the dorms at university instead of the apartment I had already paid a deposit on, I did not want to do it. Every part of me resisted. But I chose to please God over pleasing myself. And what God did in that dorm room was worth every bit of discomfort. Pleasing God is never the easiest path in the moment, but it is always the most fruitful one in the end.

Lord, I want to be someone who genuinely seeks to please You above all else. Show me today where I have been more concerned with what others think than what You think. Help me to walk in step with Your heart.

At one decision point today, whether small or significant, pause and ask yourself, "Is this pleasing to God?" Let that question guide your choice.

Turn and Receive

Proverbs 1:23 — "Turn at my rebuke; surely I will pour out my spirit on you and make my words known to you."

This verse stopped me when I was preparing this series because it reveals something we often miss. We tend to chase the anointing, the presence, the revelation. We want the outpouring. But God says the pathway to that outpouring begins with turning. When He brings correction to your life, through His word, through a trusted friend, through your spouse, through that quiet conviction in your spirit, the question is whether you will humble yourself and turn. On Sunday I shared how a sister in Bible school pointed out something in my speech I had not noticed. It would have been easy to brush it off. But I had to decide. Will I protect my pride or will I turn? When you turn at His rebuke, He promises to pour out His Spirit on you and open up His word to you in a fresh way. Correction is not rejection. It is the doorway to a deeper anointing.

Father, make me quick to hear and slow to defend myself when You bring correction. I want the outpouring more than I want to be right. Help me to turn with a willing heart today.

Think of one area where you have felt a quiet, repeated conviction from God. Write it down and take one practical step today toward turning in that area.

The Word That Keeps You Clean

Psalm 119:9 — "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word."

I said on Sunday that if you stay away from the word of God, layer after layer of worldliness will settle on you. And the trouble is, you will not always know it is happening. You stop noticing the drift. Your conscience grows quieter. Things that once grieved you start to feel normal. The word of God is the only consistent cleansing agent for your heart and mind. It does not just inform you. It washes you. It recalibrates what you love and what you hate. Hebrews 1:9 tells us that Jesus loved righteousness and hated lawlessness, and that love for righteousness came from a life saturated in the Father's heart. The same is available to you. You do not have to be a theologian. You just have to open the word daily and let it do its work. A clean heart is not maintained by trying harder. It is maintained by staying in the word faithfully.

Lord, I want Your word to be more than information to me. Let it wash me, change me, and realign my desires with Yours. Help me to build a daily habit of being in Your word, not out of duty but out of genuine hunger for You.

Set a specific time today, even ten minutes, to sit quietly with your Bible. Read slowly and ask the Holy Spirit to show you one thing He wants to say to you personally through what you read.

Fear God and Keep His Commandments

Ecclesiastes 12:13 — "Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man's all."

Solomon had everything the world could offer. Wealth, wisdom, influence, pleasure. He pursued it all. And when he stepped back and looked at his whole life, he arrived at this one conclusion. Fear God. Keep His commandments. That is it. That is the whole of a human life. On Sunday I closed with this because I believe the fear of God is not something we talk about enough anymore. It is not a cowering terror. It is a deep, settled reverence that says, "You are God and I am not. You are holy and I want to honor that." When that reverence is alive in you, obedience becomes less of a struggle and more of a response. It is how you finish well. It is how you walk into your destiny fully rather than partially. Developing a heart after God is not a single decision. It is a direction you choose again every morning. Choose it again today.

Father, restore in me a holy reverence for who You are. I do not want to treat You casually or take Your grace for granted. Help me to finish this week, and this life, walking in faithful obedience to You.

Write down one commandment or clear instruction from God that you know you need to obey more consistently. Commit it to Him in prayer today and take one concrete step toward walking it out.
