I AM A New Creation

Pastor Mirek Hufton · 2026-10-07

In this powerful message from 2 Corinthians 5, Pastor Mirek walks us through one of the most life-changing truths in all of Scripture: you are a new creation in Christ Jesus. Understanding who you really are in the spirit is not optional; it is the foundation for everything God has called you to do and be in these last days.

"I Am a New Creation" — Small Group Discussion Guide

Based on the teaching by Pastor Mirek Hufton from 2 Corinthians 5

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Mirek Hufton opened this message by drawing the congregation back to 2 Corinthians 5, focusing on what it truly means to be a new creation in Christ. He traced the fall of man from a spirit-being made in God's image to a sin-bound creature limited to five senses, and then celebrated the miracle of the new birth as God's masterwork of restoration. He challenged every believer to stop living as a carnal, sense-driven Christian and to rise up into the spiritual identity and divine love that God has placed on the inside of them.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

2 Corinthians 5:17

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."

3. ICE BREAKER

Think of a time when something in your life was completely replaced with something brand new — a car, a phone, a home, a relationship. What was the feeling of walking away from the old and stepping into the new?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Pastor Mirek emphasized that man was originally created as a spiritual being made in God's image, designed to operate by his spirit rather than by his five senses alone. What does it mean to you personally that God made you in his own image and class? How does that change the way you see yourself on an ordinary Tuesday?

2. He described the carnal Christian as someone who walks like a "mere man" — reacting by emotions, making decisions through natural thinking, and living by the limits of what they can see, hear, and feel. Be honest with the group: in what area of your life do you most often slip into the "flesh lane," as Pastor Mirek called it? What tends to pull you there?

3. Pastor Mirek made a strong distinction between dying to "self" and dying to "flesh," pointing out that the new self is holy, righteous, and sanctified — worth celebrating, not constantly condemning. How has the way you talk about yourself reflected either your old nature or your new creation identity? Does the language you use about yourself line up with what Scripture says you are?

4. He described God's divine nature as love, and Satan's nature as selfishness, and noted that every believer has been given the capacity to carry and express God's love supernaturally. Where is the tension most real for you between living from a posture of love and generosity versus the pull toward self-protection and self-interest? What does "supernatural selfishness" — out-giving and out-serving everyone around you — look like in your specific world?

5. Pastor Mirek pointed to worship as one of the most direct pathways for the spirit of a believer to connect with God, and he warned that quiet time can become dry religious routine rather than genuine spiritual engagement. What currently shapes your personal time with God more — routine or genuine hunger? What has worship looked or felt like in your life when it has been most real and most life-giving?

6. He closed with urgency, reminding the congregation that these are the last days and that God needs every available believer to step out of spiritual infancy and into the fullness of what Christ purchased for them. What is the one thing that most consistently keeps you from stepping further into your identity as a new creation? Is it busyness, unbelief, past failure, unfamiliarity with the Word, or something else entirely?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

Choose one specific truth about your new creation identity from the scriptures Pastor Mirek referenced — for example, "I am of God" from 1 John 4:4, or "I am righteous and sanctified" from 1 Corinthians 1:30 — and speak it out loud, by name, every morning and every night for the next seven days. Write it on a sticky note, set a phone reminder, or put it somewhere you will not miss it. At your next group meeting, share what shifted, if anything, in your thinking or your daily responses during that week.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each person in the group would receive a genuine, heart-level revelation of who they are as a new creation in Christ, moving beyond intellectual agreement into lived reality.

  • Pray for the specific area each group member identified where they most easily slip into carnal, flesh-driven living, asking God to bring the Holy Spirit's strength and awareness into that exact place this week.

  • Pray that the group, and the church as a whole, would grow in the kind of selfless, God-sourced love that Pastor Mirek described — the love that lives to give itself away and is the clearest evidence of God's nature working in a believer.

7. MEMORY VERSE

1 Corinthians 1:30

"But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God — and righteousness and sanctification and redemption."

Leader Note: Give the group room to be honest in their answers. Pastor Mirek was direct in this message about the gap between what believers possess in Christ and how many actually live day to day. The goal of this discussion is not to produce guilt but to stir genuine hunger for more. Celebrate small steps. Keep the focus on grace.

You Are Not Who You Used To Be

2 Corinthians 5:17 — "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."

On Wednesday I told you something I want you to sit with all week: you are not who you used to be. That is not a motivational phrase. That is a spiritual fact. Before Christ, your spirit was dead to God. You operated by your five senses, limited by what you could see, touch, taste, hear, and smell. But the moment you declared Jesus as Lord, something happened on the inside of you that no doctor can measure and no scientist can explain. God reached into your spirit and recreated you from the inside out. You left the lordship of Satan and stepped into the lordship of Jesus Christ. That is not small. That is the greatest miracle on this planet. Do not get familiar with it. Do not let it become ticker tape. Let it be the most serious, most life-changing truth you carry into this week.

Father, let the reality of being a new creation sink deeper into me today than it ever has before. I do not want to just know this in my head — I want to live it. In Jesus name, amen.

Say out loud three times today, at different moments: "I am a new creation. I am a brand new man" or "brand new woman." Mean it each time.

Made in His Image, Meant for More

Genesis 1:26 — "Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth."

I want you to understand something about how God originally designed you, because it matters deeply to who you are right now. When God created man in his own image, he was not making a physical copy. God is a spirit. So when he made you in his image, he made you a spiritual being, someone capable of operating supernaturally, guided by God himself. That was the plan. Adam named the animals. He had dominion. He was not limited to his five senses the way we are now. Sin changed that. Death entered through the fall, as Romans 5:12 tells us, and man was reduced to living by his natural mind alone. But here is the good news I want you to carry today: through Christ, that original design is being restored in you. You were built for more than worry, more than reaction, more than the limitations of your flesh.

Lord, remind me today that I was not designed to live small. You made me in your image and through Christ you are restoring that in me. Help me to believe it. In Jesus name, amen.

Before you make one decision today, pause and ask sincerely: "What does God say about this?" Do not move past that question quickly. Let it be real.

Stop Walking Like a Mere Man

1 Corinthians 3:1 — "And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ."

I said on Wednesday that one of the most convicting things Paul ever wrote was that some believers walk as mere men. Think about what that means. You have the Holy Spirit living inside you. You have the divine nature of God. You have been delivered from the power of darkness and placed into the kingdom of his dear Son. And yet Paul looks at some believers and says, you are acting like people who do not have any of that. Carnal simply means you are making decisions and having reactions based entirely on your flesh, your emotions, your offense, your feelings. Babies are touchy. Babies react. A spiritual adult knows who they are and responds from that place rather than from hurt and habit. The length of time you have sat in a church pew does not make you spiritually mature. Maturity comes from building your spirit on the word and walking it out daily.

Father, I do not want to be found walking as a mere man when you have given me everything I need to walk in the spirit. Show me where I am still reacting from the flesh and help me to grow. In Jesus name, amen.

Think of one area where you tend to react emotionally rather than respond spiritually. Write it down. Bring it to God today and ask him to help you respond differently the next time it comes up.

You Are Joined to Him

John 15:5 — "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing."

I love this image of the vine and the branch because it shows us something that the mind struggles to fully grasp. The vine and the branch are two distinct things, and yet they are one plant. You cannot separate them and expect either to thrive. That is the relationship Jesus is describing between himself and you. You are joined to him. First Corinthians 6:17 says that he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit. One spirit. That is not poetic language. That is your spiritual reality right now. The problem is that most of us live as though the branch has been cut off and left on the ground. We rely on our own thinking, our own strength, our own ability to figure things out. But Jesus says without me you can do nothing of lasting, eternal significance. When you abide in him, when you worship, when you press into his presence, fruit comes. Good fruit. Lasting fruit.

Jesus, I want to abide in you today, not just check a box but truly stay connected to you. Let everything I do flow from that connection. In your name, amen.

Set aside ten minutes today not to ask God for anything, but simply to worship him. Put on a worship song or sit in silence and tell him you love him. Let your spirit connect with his.

Live by the Spirit, Not by the Flesh

Romans 8:13 — "For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live."

I want to close this week by making something plain. The new creation life I have been walking you through all week is not automatic. It requires a daily, deliberate choice to put the flesh under and let the spirit lead. Romans 8:13 does not say the flesh will quietly go away on its own. It says by the spirit you put it to death. That takes effort. It takes the discipline of building your spirit through prayer, through the word, through fasting, through faithfulness, and through time in his presence. I told you Wednesday that your spirit is like a muscle. It has to be trained. The man who is strong physically went through the discipline of diet and consistent work. Your spirit man is no different. You stay at it. You keep saying who you are in Christ. You keep worshipping. You keep showing up. And as you do, the strength of God rises in you, and you begin to live the life you were actually made for.

Father, I choose today to live by your spirit and not by my flesh. Strengthen me from the inside out and let the real me, the new creation you made, be what shows up in every situation. In Jesus name, amen.

Identify one habit this week that has been feeding your flesh more than your spirit. Make one practical change today to redirect that time or energy toward building your spirit instead.
