Looking Through God's Eyes

Pastor Chris Hufton · 2025-04-30

Your perspective shapes everything, how you see people, how you handle pain, and how you trust God through uncertainty. In this message, I walk through what it really means to see life, people, and circumstances through God's eyes instead of our own, and why getting that lens right changes everything.

Looking Through God's Eyes

Small Group Discussion Guide

Based on the message by Pastor Chris Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

In his message "Looking Through God's Eyes," Pastor Chris Hufton challenged the congregation to examine the lens through which they see their circumstances, the people in their lives, and God himself. He pointed out that our natural human perspective is rooted in self-protection, self-preservation, and self-promotion, all of which distort the way we see the world around us. Pastor Chris called the group to pursue the same attitude as Jesus Christ, seeing people and situations not through pain, offense, or pride, but through the redemptive, faith-filled perspective of the Father.

2. KEY SCRIPTURES

Philippians 2:2-5 (NLT) "Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. Don't be selfish, and don't try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don't look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had."

James 1:5 (NLT) "If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking."

Psalm 119:18 (NLT) "Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions."

Galatians 5:25 (NLT) "Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit's leading in every part of our lives."

3. ICE BREAKER

Think of a time when you literally saw something differently depending on where you were standing or sitting. Maybe a sign only made sense from one angle, or a room looked completely different from a different doorway. Share what you noticed, and what it felt like when your perspective suddenly shifted.

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Pastor Chris opened by describing how he had lived in his house for eleven years without realizing the kitchen light was shining directly in his wife's eyes. He used this as a picture of how blind we can be to someone else's experience without even knowing it. Where in your life right now might you be unaware of how someone else is experiencing a situation differently than you are?

2. Pastor Chris described three ways our flesh filters life through a self-centered lens: self-protection, self-preservation, and self-promotion. Which of these three tendencies do you find hardest to recognize in yourself, and why do you think that particular one is so easy to miss?

3. In Matthew 16, Jesus told Peter, "You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God's." Pastor Chris pointed out that even someone as close to Jesus as Peter could be completely sincere and still be looking at a situation through the wrong lens. How do you personally try to tell the difference between what God is saying and what your own emotions or reasoning are telling you?

4. Pastor Chris talked about the danger of carrying unresolved offense, comparing it to collecting things and lining them up, holding on rather than letting go. He said that offense clouds every other area of life, including how we see God, our future, and the people around us. Without naming anyone, is there an area of your life right now where you sense an offense may be shaping how you see things, even subtly?

5. He challenged the group to pray blessing over difficult people rather than cursing them, and to see broken people as restorable rather than dispensable. What makes that genuinely hard to do, and what has helped you in the past when you have managed to get there?

6. Pastor Chris said that our endurance grows through trials, and that God rarely works quickly by human standards. He encouraged the group to shift from asking why something is happening to trusting that God sees from the beginning to the end. What is one area of your life where you are currently being asked to trust God without yet being able to see what he is doing?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, identify one person in your life who is currently difficult to love or easy to write off. Each day for seven days, pray a specific blessing over that person by name, asking God to give you his perspective on who they are and what they might be going through. At the end of the week, write down one sentence describing whether or how your view of that person has shifted.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that God would reveal any blind spots in how group members are currently seeing their circumstances, their relationships, or their own hearts, and that he would replace those distorted views with his perspective.

  • Pray for anyone in the group carrying a long-standing offense or wound, that the Holy Spirit would bring genuine healing and the grace to extend forgiveness, not because the other person deserves it, but because Christ extended the same to us.

  • Pray for an increase in wisdom and endurance for those who are in a season of waiting, trusting God for something they have not yet seen, that their faith would not waver but would grow stronger through the delay.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Romans 12:2 (NLT) "Don't copy the behaviors and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect."

Leader note: Give group members permission to be honest about where they are struggling. The goal of this discussion is not to produce the right answers but to create space for genuine reflection and authentic conversation. Follow the Holy Spirit's leading and do not feel pressure to get through every question.

The Lens You Look Through Changes Everything

Romans 12:2 — "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will."

I want to be honest with you about something I said on Wednesday. Your perspective — the lens through which you see your life, your circumstances, and the people around you — shapes absolutely everything. When that lens is clouded by hurt, pride, or self-preservation, you stop seeing clearly. You start reading the Bible to win arguments. You start praying selfish prayers. You start filtering everything through how it makes you feel rather than what God might be saying. The answer is not trying harder. The answer is transformation — letting God rewire the way you think from the inside out. That happens daily, in his word, in prayer, in humility. You cannot grow beyond your perspective. So today, ask yourself honestly: am I seeing my life through my own understanding, or through his?

Lord, I admit I do not always see things the way you see them. Transform my mind today, not just my behavior. Let your word be the lens I look through, not my own pain or pride.

Before you check your phone this morning, spend five minutes reading one passage of scripture and ask God to show you something you have been missing.

God Sees What You Cannot

1 Samuel 16:7 — "But the Lord said to Samuel, do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."

One of the things I told our congregation on Wednesday is that we are far too quick to judge people by what we can see on the surface. The way someone dresses, the mistakes they have made, the season of life they are stumbling through — we size it all up in seconds and form a verdict. But God does not operate that way. He looks at the heart. He sees past the performance, past the mess, past the behavior that bothers you, all the way down to a person made in his image who Jesus died for. If we are going to see people the way God sees them, we have to be willing to look longer, slower, and deeper than our first impression allows. That person who is hardest for you to love right now — they are not the end of their story.

Father, forgive me for judging people by what I can see on the outside. Give me your eyes today. Help me look past the surface and see the heart you love.

Think of one person you have written off or formed a quick judgment about. Pray a genuine blessing over them by name today.

His Ways Are Higher Than Your Ceiling

Isaiah 55:8-9 — "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."

I said on Wednesday that God is not predictable, and I mean that. We try to put him in a box. We tell ourselves there are only two options in front of us — A or B — and we forget entirely that we serve a God who parts seas and guides people with pillars of fire. When you are in the middle of a hard season, it is easy to look at your circumstances and conclude that God is absent or silent. But that is you looking at life through your own limited, linear understanding. God sees from the beginning to the end all at once. He is not confused by your situation. He is not scrambling for a solution. He declared the end from the beginning. So the question is not whether God has a plan. The question is whether you are humble enough to trust it even when you cannot see it.

God, I confess that I try to figure you out instead of simply trusting you. Remind me today that your ways are higher than anything I can imagine. Help me rest in that.

Write down one situation in your life where you have been limiting God to only two options. Then write the words "there is a third way" beneath it and pray over it.

When Your Faith Is Tested, Your Endurance Grows

James 1:2-4 — "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

I am going to be straight with you — nobody likes to hear this one. On Wednesday I talked about how our culture has almost no appetite for endurance. We do not like waiting. We do not like discomfort. We want God to move fast, and when he does not, we start questioning whether he heard us at all. But James does not say endure trials and survive them. He says let endurance finish its work. There is something being built in you during the hard season that cannot be built any other way. It is not your theology that gets stretched in difficulty. It is your trust. And trust that has never been tested is not really trust at all — it is just comfort. The people in your life who carry a deep, settled peace are people who have been through something and came out still believing. That is what God is building in you.

Lord, I do not always understand why things take so long or hurt so much. But I choose today to trust that you are at work in the waiting. Build something real in me through this.

Identify one area of your life where you have been impatient with God. Write down one thing you are grateful for in that same area, and thank him for it out loud today.

Walking in the Spirit Means Seeing With His Eyes

Galatians 5:25 — "Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit."

I closed out Wednesday's message by talking about how your anxiety level drops dramatically when you stop trying to control everything and everyone around you. That is what it looks like to walk in step with the Spirit. It does not mean you become passive or that nothing bothers you. It means you stop carrying what was never yours to carry. You cannot control other people. You cannot make someone accept the truth. You cannot force a harvest by refusing to forgive. What you can do is stay in step — reading the word, praying with humility, asking the Holy Spirit to check your lens before a hard conversation, speaking blessing over the people who make it hardest to do so. This is not a one-time decision. It is a daily, sometimes hourly, choice to say, God, I want to see this the way you see it. Not my way. Yours.

Holy Spirit, keep me in step with you today. Check my lens when I start reacting instead of responding. I want to see people and circumstances the way you see them, not through my own hurt or pride.

Before one conversation or decision today, pause and quietly ask the Holy Spirit, "Am I seeing this the way you see it?" Then wait a moment before you speak or act.
