You Are a New Creation in Christ

Pastor Mirek Hufton · 2026-09-30

Most believers know they've been born again, but few truly grasp what that means. In this message, Pastor Mirek dives deep into the spiritual reality of the new creation, showing you that your rebirth in Christ is just as significant as God's original creation of Adam, and that understanding this truth is the key to walking in lasting victory.

You Are a New Creation in Christ

Small Group Discussion Guide

Based on the Teaching of Pastor Mirek Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Mirek Hufton opened with the sobering reminder from 1 Corinthians 3 that a believer can be born again yet live no differently than someone who has never encountered God, what the apostle Paul called acting like a "mere man." He challenged the congregation to slow down and truly grasp the magnitude of the new creation, arguing that the spiritual recreation of the human spirit is as profound and deliberate as God's original creation of Adam. He called every believer to pursue a spirit of wisdom and revelation so that the supernatural reality of being a new creation moves from head knowledge into a lived, daily experience.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."

3. ICE BREAKER

Think of a time you experienced something so completely new, a new city, a new job, a new season of life, that it genuinely changed how you saw yourself. What was one surprising thing that felt different about you afterward?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Pastor Mirek described the new birth as spiritually equivalent to God's original creation of Adam, not a minor upgrade, but a profound recreation of the human spirit. Does that idea surprise you, or does it feel familiar? What makes it difficult to hold onto that truth on an ordinary Tuesday?

Allow the group to sit with this before moving on. There is no single correct answer — the goal is honest reflection.

2. He pointed to Ephesians 1:17-18, where Paul prays that believers would receive "a spirit of wisdom and revelation" in the knowledge of God, with the eyes of their understanding being enlightened. Why do you think Paul felt he needed to pray that prayer over people who were already born again? What does that suggest about how spiritual growth actually works?

Encourage the group to think about the difference between information and revelation.

3. Pastor Mirek drew a clear line between the spirit, the soul, and the body, arguing that feeding the intellect alone, without growing the spirit, will not produce lasting victory. Where do you tend to invest most of your energy: your mind, your emotions, or your spirit? What does "feeding your spirit" actually look like in your daily routine?

This question works well if the group is willing to be honest about habits rather than ideals.

4. He referenced Acts 2:27, "You will not leave my soul in hell", to make the point that Jesus descended into hell as the payment for human sin, and that his resurrection was, in a sense, the birth moment of the new creation for all of humanity. How does understanding what Jesus went through before the resurrection change the weight you place on the phrase "I am a new creation"?

Remind the group that the aim is not theological debate but personal weight and gratitude.

5. Pastor Mirek stated plainly that fear is a spiritual force, and that worry, anxiety, and depression are expressions of darkness that a new creation is not required to tolerate. He was equally candid that this is not automatic, it requires rehearsing the truth and choosing to act on it. Where in your life right now is fear presenting itself as something reasonable, even justified? How might the truth of your identity as a new creation directly address that?

Give space for vulnerability here. A leader may need to share first.

6. He described Smith Wigglesworth's declaration that he was "fifty thousand times bigger on the inside than on the outside," meaning his spirit had grown large through prayer, the Word, and obedience. What would it look like for your spirit to be the biggest thing about you, larger than your fears, your circumstances, your history? What is one thing currently preventing that from being your reality?

Close this question with encouragement rather than pressure.

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

Each group member is asked to choose one specific truth from 2 Corinthians 5:17 or Ephesians 1:17-19 and write it on a card or in their phone. Every morning this week, before checking news, email, or social media, they will read that truth out loud and speak it over themselves by name, for example, "Sarah, you are a new creation. Old things have passed away." At next week's meeting, each person will briefly share what happened in their thinking or behavior as a result of beginning the day that way.

6. PRAYER POINTS

1. Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation Pray specifically that each group member would receive genuine spiritual revelation, not just mental understanding, of what it means to be a new creation. Ask God to make the truth feel as real and weighty as any natural fact they know about themselves.

2. Dominion Over Fear and Darkness Pray over any area where fear, anxiety, worry, or depression has gained a foothold in the lives of those present. Declare together, based on Colossians 1:13, that each person has been delivered from the power of darkness into the kingdom of the Son.

3. Growth of the Spirit Man Ask God to stir up a genuine hunger in each person to feed their spirit, through the Word, prayer, and time in his presence, so that the spirit takes clear ascendancy over the flesh and soul in the week ahead.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Ephesians 1:18 (NKJV)

"The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints."

Leader's Note: Pastor Mirek was candid throughout this message that even seasoned believers must return again and again to these foundational truths. If conversation stalls, simply ask the group: "Be honest, does this feel real to you today, or does it feel like language you believe in theory?" That question alone can open the door to the most meaningful part of your time together.

You Are More Than You Know

2 Corinthians 5:17 — "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."

I want you to sit with this verse today — really sit with it. Not just read it and move on, but let it settle into you. When I preached on Wednesday, I said that the new creation is the high point of everything God has ever done. Think about that. God created galaxies, oceans, and mountains, and yet the greatest moment in all of creation was when your spirit was made brand new. You are not just a reformed version of your old self. You are a spiritual recreation, as significant as when God breathed life into Adam. The devil will spend every day trying to convince you that you are ordinary, small, and defeated. But you are not. You are a new creation, and that changes everything about how you walk, talk, and face what life throws at you.

Lord, let this truth sink deeper into me today than it ever has before. Help me to stop seeing myself through my old limitations and start seeing myself the way you see me. Thank you for making me brand new.

Write the words "I am a new creation" on a sticky note and place it somewhere you will see it throughout your day — on your mirror, your dashboard, or your desk.

The Spirit Who Lives in You

1 Corinthians 1:30 — "But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God — and righteousness and sanctification and redemption."

When I think about what we inherited the moment we were born again, it almost takes my breath away. It is not just a ticket to heaven, it is wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. All of that is now living in your brand new spirit. On Wednesday I talked about this like an aircraft carrier, your spirit can land all kinds of planes because of what God placed inside you. You have the wisdom of God available to you right now. You have right standing before God, not because you earned it, but because Jesus became it for you. You are holy before God. You have been bought back from everything the enemy ever stole. This is your inheritance. Not something you are working toward. Something you already have. Start treating it that way today.

Father, I confess that I have often forgotten what you placed inside me when I was born again. Open my eyes to the inheritance I already carry. Help me to walk today like someone who knows what they have.

Speak 1 Corinthians 1:30 out loud three times today, replacing "us" with "me", making it personal and declaring it over your own life.
Wednesday

Raised From the Dead for You

Romans 4:25 — "He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification."

I want you to think about what it cost God to make you a new creation. On Wednesday I walked through what happened when Jesus went to hell and paid the price for every sin you and I have ever committed. He was not just crucified, he went all the way down into the darkness so that you and I would never have to stay there. And then God raised him up. Not just to prove a point, but to justify you, to declare you righteous before heaven. The resurrection was personal. It was for you. When Jesus came out of that grave, your new creation came with him. Every time you feel like your past defines you, I want you to remember this: the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is the power that remade your spirit. That is not a small thing. That is everything.

Jesus, thank you for going all the way, through the cross and through hell itself, so that I could be made new. Help me to live today in the fullness of what your resurrection purchased for me.

Take five quiet minutes today to thank God specifically for the resurrection, not in a general way, but personally, as if it was done just for you, because it was.

Delivered Out of Darkness

Colossians 1:13 — "He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love."

Depression is darkness. Fear is darkness. Anxiety, constant worry, and the weight of sadness, these are all darkness. And on Wednesday I reminded our congregation that as a new creation, you have been delivered from the power of all of it. Not just forgiven of sin, but transferred out of an entire kingdom. You do not live under darkness anymore. That does not mean dark feelings never come knocking, they do. But when they come, you have the authority to remind yourself and the enemy that you have already moved. You are in a different kingdom now. The kingdom of the Son of God's love. I know some of you are facing real, heavy things right now. I am not making light of that. But I am telling you, you do not have to set up a home in the darkness. You were delivered. Walk like it.

Lord, remind me today that I do not belong to darkness anymore. When fear or heaviness tries to settle on me, help me to stand in the truth that I have been transferred into your kingdom of light and love.

The next time a fearful or anxious thought comes today, say out loud, "I have been delivered from the power of darkness. I live in the kingdom of Jesus." Say it even if it feels awkward.

Bringing the Flesh Under

1 Corinthians 9:27 — "But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified."

On Wednesday I said something that I want to come back to today: you resist the devil, but you crucify the flesh. And crucifying the flesh means making your body and your emotions do what they do not want to do. It means choosing to forgive when you would rather hold on. It means choosing to pray when you would rather scroll. It means going the extra mile with someone who has not earned it. Paul was not soft about this. He said he brought his body under. That is a decision, not a feeling. You will not feel like doing the right thing every time. But you make the decision anyway because your spirit is leading, not your flesh. As you close out this week, I want to challenge you to identify one area where your flesh has been in charge. Name it. Then make a decision, not based on how you feel, but based on who you are as a new creation.

Father, show me where my flesh has been running things this week. Give me the courage to make a decision today that puts my spirit back in the lead. I do not want to live as a mere man when you have made me so much more.

Identify one specific situation this week where your flesh reacted instead of your spirit. Write down one concrete decision you will make differently starting today, and ask a trusted friend to hold you accountable to it.
