The Reflection of Restoration
In "The Reflection of Restoration," Pastor Willie Russell unpacks what it truly means to be restored by God, not just on the outside, but deep in the heart where it counts. This message is a powerful reminder that God's plan for your future has never changed, no matter what your past looks like.

"The Reflection of Restoration" — Pastor Willie Russell
1. SERMON RECAP
Pastor Willie Russell opened with the truth that God's plan for every believer is rooted in their future, not their past, drawing from Jeremiah 29:11. He used vivid illustrations — including a piece of bread representing how humanity was "cut out from" God at creation, and a restored Rolls-Royce — to show that sin separates us from God but never cancels the original purpose God placed within us. He challenged the congregation to see themselves as fully restored image-bearers who reflect the glory of Christ the way the moon reflects the light of the sun.
2. KEY SCRIPTURE
2 Corinthians 3:18 (TPT)
"We can all draw close to him with the veil removed from our faces, and with no veil we become like mirrors who brightly reflect the glory of the Lord, and we are being transfigured into his very image as we move from one brighter level of glory to another."
3. ICE BREAKER
When you were a child, who did people say you looked or acted like — and how did that make you feel?
4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Question 1 Pastor Willie used the image of bread being cut from a loaf to explain Genesis 1:26 — that humanity was not just made to resemble God but was, in a sense, cut out from Him, carrying His very characteristics. What does it mean to you personally that you were created to carry the nature and authority of God? Does that feel natural to believe, or is it a stretch? Why?
Question 2 Pastor Willie drew a contrast between the devil's focus on the past and God's focus on the future. He said that the past is our reality because we know exactly what we did, but that God's plan is located in our future. Where do you find it most difficult to let go of your past — in how you see yourself, in how you talk to God, or in how you interact with others?
Question 3 The moon illustration was central to the message. Pastor Willie explained that the moon has no light of its own but reflects the sun so powerfully that people admire its beauty without always understanding the source. In practical terms, what does it look like in your daily life when you are reflecting Christ well — and what tends to dim that reflection?
Question 4 Pastor Willie pointed to Luke 6:45 and emphasized that true restoration is a heart issue, not an outward one. He compared shallow restoration to a car that has been polished on the outside but has a broken engine underneath. Have you ever gone through a season where your outward Christian life looked put-together but your heart was not in the right place? What helped bring your heart back into alignment?
Question 5 He encouraged the group not to stop moving forward when obstacles arise — using the example of a car breaking down on the way to church and saying to call a friend, get a ride, keep going. What is one specific thing in your life right now that the enemy is using to slow your forward momentum, and how might the group help you push through it?
Question 6 Proverbs 27:19 says that as water reflects a face, a person's heart reveals who they truly are. If someone who did not know you watched your words and reactions this past week, what would they conclude about the condition of your heart? What would you want them to see instead?
5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE
This week, each group member should choose one specific relationship — a coworker, neighbor, family member, or friend — and intentionally let their light shine in that relationship through one concrete act of kindness or a direct conversation. When the other person responds, the group member should be ready to give credit not to themselves but to Christ. At next week's gathering, each person should briefly share what happened.
6. PRAYER POINTS
-
Pray that each group member would develop a settled confidence in their identity as a restored image-bearer of God, no longer defined by past sin or failure.
-
Pray for genuine heart transformation — not polished outward appearances — so that what flows from each person's mouth and actions would reflect the treasure of Christ stored within them.
-
Pray for boldness and clarity as group members engage the specific relationship they identified in the application challenge, trusting the Holy Spirit to use that moment as an opportunity to point someone toward Jesus.
7. MEMORY VERSE
John 8:12 (TPT)
"I am the light of the world, and those who embrace me will experience life-giving light, and they will never walk in darkness."
Daily Devotional
The Plan Is Still in Place
Jeremiah 29:11 — "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future."
On Wednesday I stood before our congregation and said something I want you to carry into this week: the devil's plan is about your past, but God's plan is about your future. That distinction matters more than we often realize. So many of us wake up on a Monday morning dragging yesterday's failures into a new week. We rehearse what we did wrong, who we disappointed, where we fell short. But God is not standing in your past waiting to remind you of it. He is standing in your future, waving you forward. The plan He declared over your life has not expired. It was not voided by your worst moment. Prosperity, hope, and a future are still written over you. Stop reading the old pages. God has already written what comes next.
Lord, help me stop living in what was and start trusting what You have already declared over my future. I choose today to believe that Your plan for me is good. Thank You for not giving up on me.
Cut From the Same Cloth
Genesis 1:26 — "Then God said, Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky."
On Wednesday I used a simple illustration to show what it means to be made in God's image. I took a piece of something whole and cut a piece from it. That piece carried every characteristic of what it came from. That is you. You were not just made to resemble God from a distance. You were cut from Him. Every attribute, every capability, every ounce of authority He carries was placed inside of you at creation. Sin interrupted your ability to operate in that, the way a broken watch cannot tell time. But here is what I need you to hear: a broken watch is still a watch. Sin did not change what you are. It interrupted what you could do. And through Jesus Christ, the internal mechanisms have been repaired. You are back in working order. Walk like it today.
Father, remind me today that I was made from You and for You. Help me to stop living beneath the identity You designed for me. Restore in me the confidence of knowing whose I am.
The Lamb Was Enough
Leviticus 6:7 — "In this way the priest will make atonement for them before the Lord, and they will be forgiven for any of these things they did that made them guilty."
On Wednesday I asked two people to come forward to help illustrate the old covenant sacrifice. The one who sinned brought the offering to the priest, and once that offering was accepted, she walked away completely forgiven. The priest never chased her back down to remind her of what she had done. The debt was settled. That is exactly what Jesus did on the cross. He was the perfect Lamb, without blemish, of the highest value, fully accepted by the Father. And when God looked at that sacrifice and said it was enough, He sent you back into your life completely restored. The case was closed. The guilt was cancelled. We must stop reopening what God has already sealed shut. You do not owe a debt that has already been paid. Receive that today, fully and without hesitation.
Jesus, thank You for being the Lamb that was enough. Help me to stop carrying guilt that You already paid to remove. I receive my forgiveness today without holding back.
You Are the Mirror
2 Corinthians 3:18 — "And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit."
On Wednesday I talked about the moon. The surface of the moon is completely dark. No light lives there. Yet every night people look up and admire the glow of it, never realizing they are not looking at the moon's light at all. They are seeing the sun reflected back to them. That is exactly what you are. You are not the source of the light people see in you. Jesus is the source. You are the mirror. And the beautiful thing about this verse is that it promises transformation from one level of glory to the next. You are not stuck at the same brightness you were last year. Every step forward in God means a brighter reflection. Keep your face toward Him. Keep moving. Do not let the enemy talk you into standing still or turning around. There is more glory ahead of you than behind you.
Lord, I want to reflect You clearly today. Remove anything in me that dims that light or distorts that reflection. Transform me, level by level, from glory to glory.
What Your Heart Is Saying
Luke 6:45 — "A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of."
On Wednesday I showed a picture of a restored Rolls Royce and said something I do not want you to miss. The shine on the outside is not the real restoration. Anyone can polish up the exterior. Anyone can dress up and walk through the doors of a church looking like everything is fine. But the real work happens under the hood, in the engine, in the heart. What is stored in your heart will eventually come out of your mouth, and your mouth will tell the truth even when your appearance does not. If restoration has truly happened on the inside, it will show up in how you speak, how you treat people, and how you respond to difficulty. This is not a call to shame but to honesty. Ask God to search your heart today. Let Him do the deep work, not just the surface work. That is where real restoration lives.
God, search my heart today and show me what is really in there. Where there is still hardness or bitterness, soften it. I want what comes out of my mouth to sound like someone who has truly been restored.
