Godly Vision

Pastor Willie Russell · 2025-10-12

In this message, Pastor Willie Russell unpacks what it truly means to walk in God-given vision, and why so many believers stay stuck living far below what God has already placed inside them. Drawing from Habakkuk 2:1-3, this word is a direct challenge to stop letting your present circumstances, limited resources, and self-doubt define your destiny.

"Godly Vision" — Pastor Willie Russell

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Willie Russell taught from Habakkuk 2:1–3, challenging the congregation to understand that God-given vision is already planted on the inside of every believer. He identified three key obstacles that hinder people from walking in their God-given destiny: present circumstances, present resources, and present self. He called the group to write the vision down, settle into the right place, and trust that God's provision always follows God's vision.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Habakkuk 2:2–3

"The Lord answered me: Write down the vision; clearly inscribe it on tablets so one may easily read it and run with it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; it testifies about the end and will not lie. Though it delays, wait for it, since it will surely come and will not be late."

3. ICE BREAKER

What is one dream or goal you had as a child that you have not thought about in a long time?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Point 1 — Your Present Circumstance

Pastor Willie warned that too many believers allow their current circumstances to dictate their reality rather than holding onto what God has said. He reminded the group that present circumstances are temporary, but a God-given vision has eternal implications.

  • In what ways can a difficult or discouraging season make a person feel as though God's vision for their life is no longer relevant or possible? How have you seen someone — or perhaps yourself — push through that temptation?

Point 2 — Your Present Resources

Pastor Willie taught that a lack of resources is one of the most common reasons people put their vision on hold, yet he emphasized that God is "pro-vision" — meaning His provision is specifically designed to bring His vision to pass.

  • Pastor Willie said, "Vision attracts resources." What does it look like practically to move forward on a God-given vision when the finances, connections, or tools needed are not yet visible? Where does trust come in?

Point 3 — Your Present Self

Pastor Willie challenged the group by saying that sometimes the greatest obstacle to fulfilling a God-given vision is the person themselves — their doubt, their sense of unworthiness, or their tendency to talk themselves out of what God has called them to do.

  • He pointed to Abram becoming Abraham and Jacob becoming Israel as examples of people whose identity changed as they walked through the process of vision. What beliefs or internal narratives most commonly prevent people from seeing themselves the way God sees them, and what does it take to begin shifting those beliefs?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

Before the group meets again, each person should set aside thirty minutes this week to write down a personal or family vision statement — even if it is only two or three sentences. The statement should answer three questions: What do I sense God calling me toward? What does it look like when it is fulfilled? And why does it matter beyond just my own benefit? Bring it to the next meeting to share with the group.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each group member would have the courage to write down what God has placed on their heart, even if it feels too big or too unclear right now.
  • Pray for patience and trust in God's timing, especially for anyone in the group who is in a difficult season and struggling to hold onto hope for the future God has promised.
  • Pray that the group as a whole would grow in the conviction that God's provision faithfully follows God's vision, and that no person in the room would settle for less than God's best for their life.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Jeremiah 29:11

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope."

Station Yourself and Settle In

Habakkuk 2:1 — "I will stand at my guard post and station myself on the lookout tower. I will watch to see what he will say to me."

On Sunday, I challenged you with something that sounds almost too simple: destiny starts with being in the right place. Habakkuk did not just wander toward God. He planted himself. He stationed himself. He settled in with expectation, watching for what God would say — not just listening, but looking. There is a difference. Hearing a word can stay in your head. Seeing a word drops it into your spirit. I want to ask you honestly today — are you on your post? Have you settled into the place, the ministry, the season God has called you to? Or have you drifted because it is taking too long, or because it did not look the way you expected? Settle in. God is not finished. He is looking for you at your post.

Lord, forgive me for the times I have stepped away from where you placed me. Help me today to plant my feet, settle my heart, and watch with expectation for what you are saying. I trust your timing.

Write down one specific place or role God has called you to and commit today to showing up there faithfully this week.

Your Circumstance Does Not Cancel the Vision

Psalm 84:11 — "For the Lord God is a sun and a shield. The Lord will give grace and glory. No good thing will he withhold from those who walk uprightly."

Your present circumstance is one of the biggest obstacles to your vision. When God speaks something over your life, your circumstances will almost always tell a different story. They will look you in the face and say, this is as good as it gets. But I want you to hear what this verse is really saying: if you do not have it yet, it is either not time or it is not good for you in this moment. That is not a punishment. That is protection wrapped in provision. God is not withholding to be cruel. He is a sun and a shield. He gives grace and glory. Your circumstance is temporary. What God said about you has eternal implications. Write the vision down. Do not let what you see around you today convince you to let go of what God placed inside you. The vision is for an appointed time.

God, help me stop letting my circumstances speak louder than your word. I choose today to believe what you said about me, even when I cannot see it yet. You are my sun and my shield.

Find a piece of paper and write down one thing God has spoken over your life. Place it somewhere you will see it every day this week.

Vision Attracts Provision

Psalms 42:7 — "Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me."

On Sunday I told you about standing in front of John Whelan, a man of deep pockets, and sharing a vision for a ministry that was barely off the ground. I had no resources to match the dream. But I had a vision God gave me, and I spoke it out boldly. Two weeks later, a check arrived. That is not a fundraising story. That is a kingdom principle. Deep calls to deep. When you carry a genuine God-given vision, it resonates with people and resources that are on the same frequency. Vision attracts provision. There is no need for God's provision in your life if you have no vision to pour it into. God is pro-vision — he is literally for your vision, and he will make himself whatever you need to fulfill it. A man of war when you need a fighter. Bread from heaven when you are hungry. Water from a rock when you are dry.

Father, I ask you today to give me the courage to speak my vision out loud, even when my resources do not match it yet. You are my provision, and I trust you to bring everything I need. Amen.

Share the vision God has given you with one trusted person today. Speak it out plainly and let someone else hear what God placed in your heart.

The Biggest Obstacle Is You

Jeremiah 29:11 — "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

On Sunday I told you plainly: sometimes the devil does not even have to show up, because you do enough damage on your own. You rehearse every reason God cannot use you. You never finished college. You made too many mistakes. Surely this vision is meant for someone more qualified. But God did not say you know the plans. He said he knows them. That means your job is not to figure it out or earn your way into it. Your job is to ask him. Just ask. God already planted the vision on the inside of you when he created you. He made you different from everyone else on purpose. The question is whether you will believe what he said more than you believe what you have told yourself. Your present self is not the finished product. Jacob became Israel. Abram became Abraham. God changes you through the process of walking toward the vision.

Lord, I repent for the times I have talked myself out of what you placed inside me. Today I choose to believe your word over my own doubts. Show me who you made me to be.

Write down one lie you have believed about yourself that has held you back from your vision. Beside it, write one thing God says about you in scripture to replace it.

Ask Why and Aim High

Proverbs 29:18 — "Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the law."

I want to close this week by pushing you to ask one honest question about your vision: why? Not what, not how — why. Every God-given vision has a heavenly reason behind it. When my wife and I wrote our family vision over thirty years ago, broke and undisciplined and nowhere near where God was taking us, we did not write down a plan to get out of debt. We wrote down a vision to break the cycle of financial bondage off of other people's lives. Getting out of debt was an outcome. The vision was always bigger than us. That is how you know it is from God. A vision that only benefits you is a dream. A vision that advances the kingdom — that is what God backs with his full provision and power. Without that kind of vision, we go in circles. We wander. We cast off restraint. But with it, God has something to work with.

God, help me ask the right question this week. Show me not just what the vision is, but why you gave it to me. Let my vision always point back to your kingdom and your glory. Amen.

Revisit what you wrote down on Monday and add one sentence answering the question: why did God give me this vision, and how does it advance his kingdom?
