Pentecostal Power
The Holy Spirit was not given just so you could speak in tongues, He was given so you could walk in power. In this message, Pastor Mirek Hufton cuts through the noise and brings the focus back to what the baptism of the Holy Spirit is actually for: the ability, might, and dunamis of God working in and through your life every single day.

PENTECOSTAL POWER
A Small Group Discussion Guide
World Harvest Church | Pastor Mirek Hufton
1. SERMON RECAP
Pastor Mirek Hufton preached from Luke 24:49 and Acts 1:4–8 on the theme of Pentecostal power, reminding the congregation that the baptism of the Holy Spirit was never meant to be merely a one-time experience marked by speaking in tongues, but a lifestyle of ongoing, Spirit-saturated strength. He challenged believers to shift their focus from the initial sign of the Spirit's coming to the intended effect: dunamis power to overcome adversity, crush the works of darkness, and live a life of genuine victory. He called the church to cultivate a strong spirit through prayer, hunger for God, and bold proclamation of the gospel.
2. KEY SCRIPTURES
Luke 24:49 "Behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you. But tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high."
Acts 1:8 "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth."
John 16:7 "It is to your advantage that I go away, because if I don't go away, I will not be able to send the Holy Spirit. And if I don't send the Holy Spirit, then He won't be able to come. But when He comes, He will do a work for you and in you to cause you to overcome in every arena of life."
3. ICE BREAKER
Think of a time when you had to do something that felt completely beyond your own ability, maybe a hard conversation, a scary decision, or a physical challenge. What got you through it? Share briefly with the group.
4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. Pastor Mirek pointed out that the disciples were looking for political and military power, but Jesus was offering something entirely different. What kind of power do people around us, and perhaps we ourselves, tend to chase after? How does God's dunamis power differ from the kinds of power the world values?
2. Pastor Mirek drew a distinction between focusing on the initial sign of the Spirit's presence and focusing on the intended effect, which is power to overcome. Has your own understanding of being filled with the Spirit been more focused on the experience itself or on the ongoing fruit of that experience? What does a genuinely Spirit-empowered life actually look like in practice?
3. He described the difference between a strong spirit and a weak spirit, noting that weak-spirited believers are easily discouraged, fearful, and prone to being offended, while strong-spirited believers push through adversity and maintain their joy. Honestly, which description feels closer to where you are right now? What do you think contributes most to spiritual weakness in a believer's life?
4. Pastor Mirek said that staying filled with the Spirit is a hunger issue, not a one-time event, and that a yielded, hungry heart is the key to ongoing power. What does it look like practically to stay hungry for God? What habits, attitudes, or influences tend to dull that hunger over time?
5. He reminded the congregation that the gospel is not the gospel until it is proclaimed, and he pointed to boldness in witness as one of the clearest signs that the Spirit's power is genuinely at work. Where in your everyday life, your neighborhood, workplace, school, or family, does fear or the desire to avoid conflict most often cause you to stay silent about your faith? What would change if you truly believed the power of God was on your words?
6. Pastor Mirek shared that during some of the most intense seasons of personal and church-wide adversity, he responded by increasing his prayer, pressing deeper into the Spirit, and refusing to allow discouragement to take root. What is your instinctive response when adversity hits hard? How might a consistent prayer life and a deliberately cultivated strong spirit change that response over time?
5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE
This week, identify one specific situation in your life where you have been responding from a place of fear, discouragement, or spiritual weakness rather than from the power and boldness the Spirit provides. Choose one concrete action, whether that is initiating a gospel conversation you have been avoiding, praying in the Spirit for an extended period each morning, or refusing to rehearse a negative narrative that has kept you feeling defeated, and do it before the group meets again. Come prepared to share what happened.
6. PRAYER POINTS
-
Pray that every member of the group would move from merely knowing about the Holy Spirit's power to actively walking in it, experiencing genuine victory over the areas of life where defeat has felt normal.
-
Pray for boldness to proclaim the gospel without apology in the specific places and relationships where silence has become a habit, trusting that the message of the cross is truly the power of God to those who believe.
-
Pray for strong spirits within the congregation, that discouragement, fear, and a weak, easily-offended spirit would be replaced by the joy, faith, and resilience that characterize a life fully saturated with God's presence.
7. MEMORY VERSE
Acts 1:8 "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth."

Daily Devotional
Clothed in Power
Luke 24:49 — "Behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you. But tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high."
On Sunday I talked about what that word "endued" really means. It means to put on, the way you put on a coat in the morning. God is not offering us a trickle of his presence, He is offering to clothe us completely in his power. That is not a small thing. That is a lifestyle. I want you to sit with that image today. Every morning when you get dressed, you are making a choice about what you put on physically. God is asking you to make the same intentional choice spiritually. Are you pressing in? Are you staying hungry? The power He promised is not reserved for a select few. It is available to you right now, today, in the name of Jesus. Don't settle for a defeated life when he has already given you the coat. Put it on.
Father, I choose today to press in and stay hungry for more of you. Clothe me with your power from on high, and don't let me settle for less than what you have promised. In Jesus' name, amen.
The Effect, Not Just the Experience
Acts 1:8 — "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth."
On Sunday I made a point that I really want to land with you this week. Sometimes in Pentecostal circles we get so focused on the experience of being filled with the Spirit that we miss the whole point of why God gave it to us. The disciples asked Jesus about political power and military authority. He redirected them entirely. He said the power you are going to receive is a different kind altogether, it is spiritual power, and it is for a purpose. That purpose is to be a witness. Not just to feel something on a Sunday, but to carry something into your Monday through Saturday. The power is supposed to show up in how you live, how you speak, how you overcome. I want you to ask yourself honestly today, is the power showing in my life? If not, press back in. Stay hungry.
Holy Spirit, let the power you placed in me show up in my daily life, not just in a moment of worship. Make me a genuine witness everywhere I go today. In Jesus' name, amen.
The Word Is Alive in You
Hebrews 4:12 — "The word is alive and full of power."
On Sunday I talked about two forces that work together to make you unstoppable: the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. I said you can plant the Word into your heart and it will grow because it is spiritual. It is explosive. It is alive. Too many believers treat the Bible like a reference book they pull off the shelf when something goes wrong. But I want you to think of it differently. When you take the Word seriously, reading it, speaking it, meditating on it, you are planting something living inside your spirit. And when the Holy Spirit is moving in you at the same time, those two forces work together to make your inner man strong. A strong spirit is not an accident. It is built. It is built through the Word and through prayer. Start building today. You do not have to be a theologian. You just have to be hungry.
Father, make your Word come alive in me today. Let it grow deep in my spirit and work together with your Holy Spirit to make me strong from the inside out. In Jesus' name, amen.
Born to Overcome
1 John 5:4 — "Whoever is born of God overcomes the world, and this victory overcomes the world, even our faith."
On Sunday I talked straight about this, and I am going to talk straight about it again today. You were not born again to drag your foot through life. You were not saved to make excuses for every hard thing that has ever happened to you. I have deep compassion for pain, real pain, real wounds, real suffering. But I also know what God has placed inside of you. He placed an overcoming spirit. He said, whoever is born of God overcomes the world. That word "overcomes" means you can actually do it. It is not a suggestion or a goal set out of reach. It is a promise backed by the power of heaven. You are a spirit being, and your spirit is stronger than your circumstances when it is yielded to God. Stop rehearsing what has been done to you and start speaking what God has placed in you. You are an overcomer in Jesus' name.
Lord, I choose today to agree with what you say about me rather than what my past says about me. Strengthen my spirit to walk in the overcoming life you have already provided. In Jesus' name, amen.
Stay Hungry, Keep Pressing
Joel 2:28 — "He will pour out his Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and daughters shall prophesy. Your young men shall see visions. Your old men will dream dreams."
On Sunday I reminded you that this promise was spoken nearly a thousand years before it was fulfilled, and then it happened. God is not slow about his promises. He is faithful to every single one. What strikes me about Joel 2:28 is the scope of it. All flesh. Sons and daughters. Young men. Old men. God left nobody out. His power is not for a spiritual elite. It is for every hungry, yielded believer who will press in and stay committed. I said on Sunday that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is not a one-time event, it is a lifestyle. You have to stay hungry. The moment you think you have arrived is the moment you start going south. So end this week not with a sigh of relief but with fresh hunger. Ask God for more. More of his presence, more of his power, more of his fire. You have not arrived. You have just begun.
God, I refuse to be satisfied with where I was last year or even last Sunday. Give me fresh hunger for your Spirit today, and keep that hunger burning all the days of my life. In Jesus' name, amen.
