The Prevailing Power of Prayer

Pastor Mirek Hufton · 2025-07-06

Prayer is not a last resort, it is the greatest weapon the church possesses. In this message, Pastor Mirek Hufton unpacks what it truly means to prevail in prayer, why so many believers stop short of their breakthrough, and how learning to pray according to God's Word unlocks answers that heaven has already prepared.

"The Prevailing Power of Prayer" — Pastor Mirek Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Mirek Hufton opened with the dramatic account from Exodus 17, where Israel's victory over the Amalekites was directly tied to Moses keeping his hands raised in intercession, illustrating that the real battle is always fought first in the spirit realm through prayer. He challenged the congregation to move beyond casual, routine praying and into prevailing prayer, the kind marked by persistence, boldness, and an unshakeable confidence that God hears every request prayed in line with His Word. He closed by grounding this call in 1 John 5:14, urging believers to know God's Word deeply, ask boldly according to His will, and refuse to waver in faith until the breakthrough arrives.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

1 John 5:14-15 (NKJV)

"Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him."

3. ICE BREAKER

Think of a time when persistence paid off in your everyday life, maybe waiting in a long line, learning a new skill, or pursuing something that took longer than expected. What kept you going when you felt like giving up?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Question 1 — Opening the Text In the Exodus 17 account, Israel's military outcome on the battlefield was directly connected to whether Moses kept his hands raised in prayer on the hilltop. Pastor Mirek described the spirit world as the "real world" that drives what we see and experience. How does that perspective change the way your group thinks about the problems and challenges you are currently facing?

Question 2 — The Nature of Prevailing Prayer Pastor Mirek pointed to several biblical examples of persistence in prayer, the woman with the unjust judge in Luke 18, the man seeking three loaves at midnight, and Jacob wrestling with the angel. He said prevailing prayer carries an attitude of "I will not be denied." Without dismissing honest seasons of doubt, what is the difference between healthy perseverance in prayer and simply repeating words without genuine faith or engagement?

Question 3 — Knowing God's Will Through His Word He stressed that the Word of God is the will of God revealed, and that confidence in prayer is built on knowing what Scripture actually promises. As a group, can you identify one or two specific promises from Scripture that directly address a need someone in your group is currently praying about? How does finding that promise change the way you would pray about it?

Question 4 — The Danger of Wavering Drawing from James 1:6-8, Pastor Mirek described double-mindedness as one of the primary ways the enemy short-circuits answered prayer. He said the enemy's main strategy is to get believers to ask, "Did He really hear me?" How does a group hold one another accountable to faith-filled, consistent prayer without sliding into either spiritual pride on one side or discouragement on the other?

Question 5 — Corporate Prayer and the Aaron and Hur Principle Pastor Mirek highlighted that Aaron and Hur came alongside Moses to hold up his hands when he grew weary, calling this a picture of corporate, unselfish intercession. He reminded the congregation that one can put a thousand to flight, but two can put ten thousand to flight. In practical terms, what would it look like for this small group to genuinely hold up one another's arms in prayer over the coming weeks, not just during the meeting but throughout the week?

Question 6 — Personal Reflection Pastor Mirek shared honestly that even as a pastor he is still growing in prayer, saying he wants to pray at a deeper level and with greater fervency. He also shared that he is alive today because the body of Christ prayed for him during a time when doctors gave him ninety days to live. What has been the greatest obstacle to your own personal prayer life, and what is one honest step you could take this week to begin moving past it?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

Before the group meets again, each member should identify one specific situation, personal health, a family relationship, a financial need, or a concern for someone who does not yet know Jesus, and find at least one Scripture promise that speaks directly to that situation. Write the situation and the verse on a notecard or in a phone note. Pray that verse back to God every day this week, out loud, by name, declaring that God heard the prayer when it was prayed. Bring the notecard to the next meeting and share any shifts in perspective, faith, or circumstances that occurred during the week.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each member of the group would develop a hunger for deeper, more consistent personal prayer, and that the discipline of daily prayer would become as natural and non-negotiable as any other essential part of daily life.

  • Pray specifically for anyone in the group who is in a season of delayed answers or discouragement, asking God to strengthen their faith, remind them that He hears them, and grant them the perseverance to hold on until the breakthrough comes.

  • Pray for this church family as a whole, that it would grow into a true house of prayer where corporate intercession is a priority, and that the gifts of the Holy Spirit would flow freely as a result of consistent, prevailing prayer.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Luke 18:1 (NKJV)

"Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart."

The Real World Is the Spirit World

2 Corinthians 4:18 — "While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal."

On Sunday I said something that I want you to carry into this week: the real world is the spirit world. Everything you see around you right now, the diagnosis, the bank account, the broken relationship, is temporary. I know that can feel like cold comfort when you're staring a problem in the face. But this verse is not asking you to be in denial. It's asking you to be anchored in a deeper reality. Prayer is how we engage that deeper reality. When Moses raised his hands, something invisible was happening that changed everything visible on the battlefield. The same is true for you. What you see is not the final word. God's word is the final word. Start this week by deciding that you will not let what is temporary dictate what is eternal.

Father, help me today to fix my eyes on what is unseen rather than what is in front of me. Remind me that prayer connects me to a reality that is more real than anything I can touch or feel. I trust you with what I cannot yet see.

Write down one visible problem you are facing and beside it write the words "temporary — God has the final word." Place it somewhere you will see it throughout the day.

You Have Not Because You Ask Not

James 4:2 — "You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask."

I want to be honest with you today. One of the biggest reasons many of us are not walking in the breakthrough God has for us is simply this, we have not asked. On Sunday I reminded you that God gave us a blank check. Anything, whatever, those are not my words, those are His. But a blank check sitting in a drawer does nothing for you. You have to fill it in and hand it over. God is not withholding from you because He is reluctant. He is waiting for you to come to Him with the boldness of a child who knows they are loved. That word I shared with you, parahesia, bold, free speech before God, that is your inheritance. You do not have to shuffle around hoping God notices. He is leaning in. Ask Him.

Lord, forgive me for the times I have worried, complained, and struggled when I should have simply come to you and asked. I am asking now, boldly, because your word says I can. Hear my prayer today.

Identify one specific need you have been carrying without truly bringing it to God in prayer. Stop right now, wherever you are, and ask Him for it plainly and specifically.

His Word Is His Will

John 15:7 — "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you."

I hear this question more than almost any other: how do I know if something is the will of God? On Sunday I told you that the word of God is the will of God revealed. You do not have to wonder and wander. If it is in this book, it is His will for your life. He wants you healed. He wants you whole. He wants your family in peace. He wants you walking in your calling. These are not wishes, they are promises backed by the character of God Himself. But notice the condition in this verse. His words must abide in you. You cannot pray His word if you do not know His word. This is why I keep pushing you toward the scripture. When you know what He said, you can pray with confidence. You can say, as Jesus said in the wilderness, it is written, and mean it.

Father, let your word take root deep inside of me so that when I pray, I am praying your will back to you. Give me a hunger for scripture that I cannot satisfy. Let your word live in me today.

Find one scripture that speaks directly to a situation you are facing. Write it out by hand, speak it aloud three times today, and pray it back to God as your prayer.

They That Know Their God

Daniel 11:32 — "The people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits."

On Sunday I said that your faith level is directly connected to how well you know God. I want to stay with that today because I think it is one of the most important things I said all week. Strength in prayer does not come from techniques or formulas. It comes from relationship. The people in scripture who prevailed in prayer, Moses, Elijah, the persistent widow, they all had one thing in common. They knew who they were dealing with. They had spent time with God. They were not strangers knocking on a door hoping someone might answer. They were children calling on a Father they already trusted. I want that for you. I want that for every person in this church. The more time you spend with God, the more your faith grows. The more your faith grows, the more you prevail. You cannot separate a praying life from a knowing-God life.

Lord, I want to know you more than I know you today. Not just know about you, but truly know you the way a child knows a father. Draw me close and let that closeness make me bold in prayer.

Set aside fifteen uninterrupted minutes today, no phone, no noise, simply to be with God. Not to ask for anything. Just to be with Him and let Him speak to you.

Lock On and Do Not Let Go

James 1:6-8 — "But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways."

On Sunday I told you about Aaron and Hur holding up Moses' arms when he grew tired. His hands could not drop. The moment they did, the battle began to turn the wrong way. That is a picture of what the enemy wants to do to your prayer life. He wants to get you wavering, double-minded, unsure whether God really heard you. Because the moment you start asking, did He hear me, did He really hear me, your arms begin to drop. I told you on Sunday to lock on. I mean it. When you have prayed the word of God, when you have asked according to His will, you must settle it on the inside, He heard me. Not maybe He heard me. Not I hope He heard me. He heard me. Faith is not a feeling. It is a decision you make based on what God said. Lock on this weekend. Do not let the enemy talk you out of what God has already promised.

Father, I make a decision right now to believe that you heard my prayer. I will not waver. I will not be moved by what I see or feel. Your word is true and I am standing on it in Jesus' name.

Think of one prayer you have been wavering on — going back and forth between believing and doubting. Make a firm decision today that you believe God heard you. Tell someone you trust what you are standing in faith for, so they can hold your arms up with you.
