Exercising Your Spiritual Authority Over the Storm

Pastor Mirek Hufton · 2026-10-11

Storms don't wait for a convenient time, they hit when you're on assignment for God. In this powerful message, Pastor Mirek walks the congregation through Mark 4 and the moment Jesus arose, rebuked the wind, and spoke peace over a raging sea. That same authority has been given to you, and it's time you started using it.

Exercising Your Spiritual Authority Over the Storm

Small Group Discussion Guide

Based on the sermon by Pastor Mirek Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Mirek Hufton drew from Mark 4:35-41 to show that just as Jesus arose and rebuked the storm on the Sea of Galilee, believers have been given real, practical authority over every work of the enemy in their lives. He reminded us that Jesus came as the second Adam to restore the dominion mankind lost, and that this authority — purchased through Christ's conquest over death — now belongs to every believer who will exercise it. He challenged the group to stop tolerating the devil's interference in their finances, health, family, and minds, and to rise up in bold, persistent faith rather than capitulating to circumstances.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Colossians 1:13 (NKJV)

"He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love."

3. ICE BREAKER

Think of a time you faced something intimidating and surprised yourself by standing your ground rather than backing down. What happened, and how did it feel afterward?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. The Storm and the Assignment Pastor Mirek pointed out that the storm in Mark 4 arose precisely because Jesus was on assignment to set a man free on the other side. Have you ever noticed opposition intensify right before a breakthrough in your own life? What did that experience teach you about the connection between spiritual resistance and forward movement for God?

2. Knowing What You Have Pastor Mirek referenced Luke 10:19, where Jesus says He has given believers authority to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy. He observed that many Christians struggle to walk in this authority simply because it has never been built into them through meditation on the Word. How much of your daily thought life is shaped by what Scripture says about your authority in Christ, compared to what your circumstances are telling you? What habits, if any, help you close that gap?

3. The Mind as a Stronghold Using 2 Corinthians 10:4-5, Pastor Mirek described the mind as the control center of a believer's life and the primary place the enemy builds strongholds. He described wrong thinking leading to wrong believing, which then opens doors the enemy exploits. Can you identify an area of your thinking — maybe rooted in past hurt, insecurity, or fear — that you know does not line up with what God says about you? What would it look like to begin pulling that stronghold down this week?

4. Standing Without Seeing Immediate Results Pastor Mirek was honest that exercising authority does not always produce instant results. He shared how his church prayed persistently for months over an attack on their finances before the breakthrough came, and he told the story of Shay's restoration, which unfolded over a period of years. How do you personally distinguish between genuine faith that holds the course and stubborn presumption? What keeps you from giving up when the circumstances have not yet changed?

5. Closing the Open Doors Pastor Mirek made the point that purity and obedience matter in spiritual warfare because unconfessed sin and disobedience create access points — open doors — the enemy can exploit. This is not about earning God's favor, but about removing unnecessary vulnerability. Is there an area of your life where you know a door may be open that you have been reluctant to deal with? What is one practical step you could take this week to close it?

6. From Victim to Witness Pastor Mirek challenged the group to take whatever the enemy has used to mark them negatively and turn it into something that helps others. He said, in effect, to take the stick the devil was beating you with and start beating him with it — through testimony, through service, through doing the opposite of what the enemy wanted for your life. Is there a painful chapter in your story that God may already be, or could be, redeeming for someone else's benefit? What would it take to offer that part of your story in service to others?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, choose one specific area of your life where the enemy has been gaining ground — whether in your thought life, your health, your finances, your marriage, or a family relationship. Each morning before you leave the house, speak out loud a declaration of authority over that area using a Scripture you look up or already know. Keep it simple, keep it specific, and keep a brief note each day of any shift — no matter how small — in your thinking, your peace, or your circumstances. Bring your observations back to the group next week.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • For renewed minds: Pray that each group member would identify one area of wrong thinking this week and begin replacing it with what Scripture declares, trusting the Holy Spirit to make that renewal real and lasting.

  • For perseverance under attack: Pray specifically for anyone in the group who is in the middle of a prolonged storm — financial, relational, or physical — that they would find the strength to hold the course in faith rather than capitulating to fear or discouragement.

  • For open doors to be closed: Pray that the Holy Spirit would gently but clearly highlight any area of disobedience or unresolved hurt in each member's life that may be giving the enemy unnecessary access, and that each person would have the courage to bring that area before God in honest repentance.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Luke 10:19 (NKJV)

"Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you."

Next week, come ready to share one thing that shifted — however small — as a result of your application challenge this week.

You Have Been Given All Authority

Luke 10:19 — "Behold, I give you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you."

On Sunday I told you that Jesus did not come simply to save us and leave us helpless. He came as the second Adam to restore what the first Adam lost — complete authority over the works of the enemy. That authority is not reserved for pastors or missionaries. It belongs to you. Right now. In your home, in your marriage, in your finances, in your body. The problem is not that you lack authority. The problem is that many of us have never truly believed it belongs to us. I want you to settle this today. Jesus said I give you authority. Not I might give it. Not I will consider it. He already gave it. Receive it, believe it, and begin walking in it. The devil has no legal right over your life in Jesus name.

Lord, I receive today what You have already given me. I choose to believe that Your authority in me is greater than anything coming against me. Help me walk in that truth today.

Speak Luke 10:19 out loud three times today, personalizing it — say "He has given me authority" — and mean every word.
Tuesday

Seated Above the Storm

Ephesians 1:20 — "Which he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places."

On Sunday I pointed you to two of the most powerful verses in all of scripture — Ephesians 1:20 and Ephesians 2:6. God raised Jesus from the dead and seated Him far above every principality, every power, every name that is named. And here is the extraordinary truth — because you are in Christ, you are seated there with Him. You are not beneath the storm. You are above it. I know that is hard to feel when the bills are piling up or your marriage is under pressure or your body is sick. But your feelings do not determine your position. God's Word does. The storm does not have authority over someone seated in heavenly places. When Jesus arose in that boat and rebuked the wind, He modeled exactly what you and I are called to do. Rise up. Speak. Take your position.

Father, remind me today that I am seated with Christ above every attack the enemy brings. Help me live from that place of authority and not from fear.

Write Ephesians 1:20 and Ephesians 2:6 on a card and place it somewhere you will see it all day — your mirror, your desk, your dashboard.
Wednesday

You Have Been Delivered — Walk Like It

Colossians 1:13 — "He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love."

On Sunday I asked the congregation to say that out loud — I have been delivered from the power of darkness. Not I am trying to be delivered. Not I hope one day to be delivered. Past tense. Done. Finished. Jesus already accomplished it. The moment you came into Christ, the enemy lost his legal authority over your life. Now here is where many believers get stuck. They have been delivered but they keep living as if they are still in chains. They tolerate depression, fear, sorrow, and defeat as if these are permanent addresses. They are not. Colossians 1:13 is your eviction notice to the darkness. You have been translated — moved, transferred, relocated — into the kingdom of God's dear Son. That is your new address. Start living there. Start thinking from there. Start speaking from there. The power of darkness has no jurisdiction over a delivered child of God.

Thank You, Lord, that I have already been delivered. I refuse to live beneath what You have already done for me. I choose today to walk as someone who belongs to Your kingdom.

Identify one area of your life where you have been tolerating defeat. Speak directly to it today and declare that you have been delivered from it in Jesus name.

Suit Up — The War Is Real

Ephesians 6:10 — "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might."

On Sunday I was direct with you — if you are going to do something for God, you are a target. The devil does not offer a free ride to anyone moving forward for the kingdom. He will come at your finances, your family, your health, your mind. But Paul's answer was never retreat. It was suit up. Be strong in the Lord. Not strong in your personality or your cleverness or your history of success. Strong in Him. The armor Paul describes in Ephesians 6 is not decorative. The belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith — each piece is the Word of God made real in your daily life. The attacks will come. I have experienced them personally and so have the ministries I walk alongside. But every piece of that armor is designed to make sure not one fiery dart gets through. Suit up every single morning.

Lord, I put on Your armor today. I choose to be strong in You and not in my own strength. Cover me, guard me, and let nothing the enemy sends find a way through.

Before you begin your day, intentionally pray through each piece of the armor in Ephesians 6:14-17, naming what it represents as you go.

Capture Your Thoughts Before They Capture You

Romans 12:2 — "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

On Sunday I talked about the mind being the control center of your life. Your mind is the gateway to your spirit. I have sat with people in counseling and seen how wrong thinking — thoughts the Word of God never authorized — had opened doors to the enemy and was running their life sideways. The devil is not just after your circumstances. He is after your thinking. If he can fill your mind with doubt, fear, unworthiness, and defeat, he does not need to do much else. But Romans 12:2 gives you the strategy. Transformation begins with renewal. Not willpower. Not positive thinking. Renewal through the Word of God, consistently, daily, spoken out of your mouth until it becomes bigger on the inside of you than anything the enemy is throwing at you. Reject thoughts that contradict the Word. Take them captive. You decide what lives in your mind.

Lord, transform my thinking today. Where my thoughts have agreed with the enemy instead of with Your Word, I repent. Renew my mind and let Your truth be the loudest voice I hear.

When a negative or fearful thought comes today, stop and say out loud, "I do not receive that thought. This is what God says about me," and follow it with a scripture you know.
