Don't Run From the Fire Embrace It

Pastor Willie Russell · 2022-09-12

In this powerful message, Pastor Willie Russell delivers a bold call to stop running from the fire of God and start embracing it as the most essential thing in your life. If you've never experienced the real presence of God, you don't even know what you're missing, and that's exactly what makes walking away from the Holy Ghost so dangerous.

Don't Run From the Fire — Embrace It

Small Group Discussion Guide | Pastor Willie Russell

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Willie Russell challenged the congregation to stop running from the fire of God and instead press deeper into His holy presence. He drew from the story of Nadab and Abihu in Leviticus 9 and 10 to show that familiarity with the things of God without genuine holiness is a dangerous place to stand. He reminded the group that the fire of God is not meant to frighten us away but to purify us, fill us, and send us out to set others ablaze.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

1 Peter 1:15-16 (NKJV)

"But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, 'Be holy, for I am holy.'"

3. ICE BREAKER

Think of a time when you avoided something difficult — a hard workout, a tough conversation, a cold swimming pool — but once you finally did it, you were glad you did. Share that experience with the group.

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Pastor Willie said that you cannot know what you are missing spiritually unless you have experienced it before. He compared it to not knowing what heat is if you have never been in a cold, dark, damp place. In your own life, has there been a season when you encountered a deeper level of God's presence that made you realize what you had been missing? What was that season like?

2. Pastor Willie pointed to Leviticus 9 and noted that Aaron and the people followed God's specific instructions exactly, and the fire of God fell and consumed the offering. He then contrasted that with Leviticus 10, where Nadab and Abihu offered a "strange fire" that God had not commanded, and it cost them their lives. What does it look like in everyday life when someone offers God a "strange fire" — going through the motions of religion while mixing in things that are not holy? Have you ever caught yourself doing this?

3. Pastor Willie described the tension of being so familiar with the presence of God that a person stops pressing in and starts taking it for granted. He described it as coming into the house of God with "wet wood" — throwing something onto the fire that only produces smoke, not flame. How does spiritual familiarity become dangerous, and what are some warning signs that a person has drifted into that place without realizing it?

4. He explained that when the Holy Spirit convicts our spirit, our responsibility is simple — repent. He also made the point that continuing to sin after Jesus has already paid the price is essentially saying that what Jesus did was not enough. How does understanding the cost of what Jesus paid change the way we think about choosing to remain in sin rather than repenting quickly?

5. Pastor Willie challenged the group not to settle for a church experience or a spiritual life that looks good on the outside but lacks the anointing and the fire of God. He was direct in saying that some people sit in dead, dry churches week after week and feel completely comfortable — but they do not know what they are missing. What practical steps can a person take to keep pressing for more of God rather than settling into spiritual comfort?

6. He closed by reminding the congregation that God loves us enough to chastise us, correct us, and send people across our path to speak truth into our lives. Pastor Willie framed this not as harshness but as the love of a Father who already knows our end from the beginning. How does receiving correction — from God, from the Word, or from a trusted leader — connect to the theme of embracing the fire rather than running from it?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, identify one specific area of your life where you have been spiritually comfortable or going through the motions — whether that is prayer, Bible reading, attendance, or a habit that has been grieving the Holy Spirit. Choose one concrete action to address it before the group meets again. Write it down, tell one person in the group what it is, and come back next week ready to share what happened when you stopped running and pressed in instead.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each member of the group would have a fresh hunger for the holy fire of God and would stop settling for a spiritual life that looks right on the outside but lacks genuine anointing.

  • Pray for the courage to repent quickly when the Holy Spirit convicts, trusting that the blood of Jesus is fully sufficient and that God's correction is an act of love, not rejection.

  • Pray that the group as a whole would become people who press into the presence of God — not just on Sunday mornings, but consistently through the week — so that the fire they carry changes the people around them.

7. MEMORY VERSE

1 Peter 1:16 (NKJV)

"Because it is written, 'Be holy, for I am holy.'"

Prepare your heart before your group meets. Read Leviticus 9:22-24 and Leviticus 10:1-3 on your own this week and ask God to show you anything in your life that qualifies as a strange fire. Come ready to be honest.

You Don't Know What You're Missing

Leviticus 9:23-24 — "Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of meeting, and came out and blessed the people. Then the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people, and fire came out from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces."

I said this on Monday, and I want you to sit with it today: you cannot know what you are missing if you have never had it. That is what makes walking away from the fire so dangerous. When Aaron and his sons followed God's instructions exactly, fire came out from the Lord and consumed the offering. Every single person there saw it. No one was left untouched. No one walked away unchanged. That is what the presence of God does when we stop holding back and simply obey. I wonder how many of us have grown so comfortable in routines that feel like church but carry none of the fire. God is not asking for performance. He is asking for obedience that opens the door to his glory. The fire is available. The question is whether we are willing to press in and receive it.

God, forgive me for the times I have settled for the appearance of worship without actually pressing into your presence. I want the real thing. Light your fire in me again today.

Spend ten minutes today in quiet, honest prayer asking God to show you one area where you have been going through the motions spiritually.

The Danger of Strange Fire

Leviticus 10:1-2 — "Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. So fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord."

What happened to Nadab and Abihu is one of the most sobering moments in all of scripture. They were leaders. They had seen the fire fall. They had been right there when the glory of God consumed the offering and the people fell on their faces. And yet, right after that moment, they decided to bring something to God that he had not asked for. They got familiar. They thought proximity to the presence made them exempt from holiness. It did not. I want to be honest with you today: familiarity with the things of God is not the same as holiness before God. A title, a position, a front-row seat does not make the fire in you clean. God is not moved by what we have accumulated in religion. He is moved by hearts that genuinely seek to honor him. Let today be a day of honest inventory, not condemnation.

Lord, search my heart and show me where I have grown familiar with your presence in an unhealthy way. I do not want to bring strange fire before you. Purify what I offer you today.

Write down one habit, attitude, or behavior you have been excusing in your spiritual life and bring it honestly before God in prayer today.

Be Holy Because He Is Holy

1 Peter 1:15-16 — "But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, 'Be holy, for I am holy.'"

God would not tell me to be holy if it were impossible. That is something I need you to hear clearly today. He would not ask it of me if he had not already made a way for me to walk in it. The moment I accepted Jesus, God placed his Holy Spirit on the inside of me. That Spirit gives me the capacity to live in a way that honors God, even in a world that is doing everything it can to pull me away from him. When I stumble, the Holy Spirit speaks to my spirit and conviction rises. That conviction is not God punishing me. It is God loving me enough to get my attention. All I have to do is respond. Repent. Come back. The blood of Jesus has already paid the price. Holiness is not about perfection. It is about a daily, honest posture before a God who is worthy of every clean thing I have to offer.

Father, thank you for not leaving me on my own to figure out holiness. Help me to listen when your Holy Spirit speaks to my spirit today, and give me the courage to respond quickly.

The next time you feel convicted about something today, pause immediately and pray a simple prayer of repentance rather than pushing the feeling aside.

Somebody Has to Pay

Romans 6:23 — "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

I want to be straight with you today. The wages of sin are death. That has not changed. But here is what I do not want you to miss: Jesus already paid it. His blood was enough. Every time I choose to keep sinning without repentance, I am essentially standing before God and saying, what Jesus did was not sufficient. I am going to add my own wages on top of his payment. And the truth is, I will go bankrupt doing that. I do not have enough to cover what sin costs. None of us do. But Jesus does. The fire of God is not designed to destroy you. It is designed to burn up everything in you that is keeping you from walking in the fullness of what he paid for. Do not waste the price that was paid. Do not treat grace like it is unlimited credit with no consequence. Receive it. Walk in it. Honor it.

Jesus, I am grateful that your blood was enough, more than enough, to cover everything I have ever done. Help me to never take that lightly or use your grace as permission to stay in what you already delivered me from.

Read Romans 6:1-4 today and spend five minutes meditating on what it means to walk in newness of life rather than returning to old patterns.

Press for the More

Exodus 40:34 — "Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle."

The glory of God filled the tabernacle completely. There was no room for anything else. That is the picture I want you to carry into your weekend. When the presence of God truly fills a life, there is no space left for the things that once pulled you away from him. But you have to press for it. I have seen what happens when people press together for ten days in revival. I have seen hands catch fire. I have seen people completely undone by the presence of God. And I have also seen people walk away from that fire because it felt like too much. Do not be that person. There is always more. More of God, more of his fire, more of his presence available to you. Do not settle for a comfortable distance from the glory when God is inviting you all the way in. Press. Stay. Do not run from the fire.

God, I want to be so full of your presence that there is no room left for what used to distract me. Teach me how to press and not quit when it gets hard or uncomfortable.

Commit to attending your next church service not as a passive observer but with a specific, intentional prayer asking God to meet you there and fill you fresh.
