Set Apart for God

The Power of Purity

Pastor Chris Hufton · 2021-10-10

A pure heart is not about being perfect, it's about staying connected to the most powerful force in the universe. In this message from our Set Apart for God small group series, I unpack what it truly means to have a pure heart, why your conscience is your greatest spiritual tool, and how repentance is the key that restores your connection to God's power.

The Power of Purity

Small Group Discussion Guide | Set Apart for God Series, Chapter 5

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Chris Hufton walked the congregation through what it truly means to have a pure heart, anchoring the message in Matthew 5:8 and the promise that the pure in heart will see God. He explained that purity is not the absence of sin but rather knowing what to do with sin when it comes, and that God equips every believer with a conscience — the voice of the Holy Spirit — to filter what enters the spirit. He challenged the group to take seriously the daily habits that either strengthen or deaden that conscience, and to develop a lifestyle of honest, genuine repentance so that God's powerful presence can dwell freely within them.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Matthew 5:8 (ESV) "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."

3. ICE BREAKER

What is one household filter, system, or tool — a water filter, an air purifier, a spam folder — that you absolutely could not live without, and why does it matter so much to your daily routine?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Pastor Chris used the image of a water filter to describe the conscience — the idea being that the more we pour into our spirit, the harder our filter has to work, and the more regularly it needs to be cleaned. What kinds of things in your daily life do you think put the most strain on your spiritual filter, and why are those particular things so easy to overlook?

2. Pastor Chris described five types of conscience found in Scripture: weak, defiled, evil, dead, and good. Without putting anyone on the spot, which of the negative types do you think is most common among people in your generation or community, and what do you think leads someone there gradually rather than all at once?

3. He pointed out that deceived people rarely know they are deceived, using King David's blindness to his own sin as the example. Nathan had to tell David a story about a stolen sheep before David could see himself clearly. Why is it so difficult to see our own blind spots, and what kinds of relationships or habits might help us stay honest with ourselves the way Nathan was honest with David?

4. Pastor Chris outlined five R's of repentance: Realistic Recognition, Regretful Remorse, Request for Grace, Renouncing the Sin, and Restitution. Which of those five steps do you think people most often skip or rush through, and what does skipping that particular step cost them in the long run?

5. He made a distinction between removing a sinful habit and actually getting the root out — using his own experience of removing video games but later discovering the same anger surfacing during home repair projects. What is the difference between managing a sin and genuinely repenting of it, and why does that distinction matter for long-term spiritual health?

6. Pastor Chris referenced Ezekiel 8 and the sobering words of the Israelites — "The Lord does not see us" — as a warning about the private, hidden corners of our lives, including our online habits and solo moments. How does the truth that we are now the temple of the Holy Spirit change the way we should think about what we do when no one else is watching?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, each group member is encouraged to set aside ten uninterrupted minutes to pray through Psalm 51 slowly and out loud, using it as a personal prayer of honest examination. Before that time, they should identify one specific area — a media habit, a relationship pattern, an attitude — where they have been rationalizing rather than repenting, and bring it directly and specifically before God using Pastor Chris's five R's framework. At the next group meeting, members are invited to share one thing God revealed to them during that time, without pressure to share anything that feels too personal.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each group member would develop a sensitive and healthy conscience, one that is quickly responsive to the leading of the Holy Spirit rather than dulled by the constant noise of media, entertainment, and distraction.

  • Pray for the courage and humility to be honest before God and before trusted people in the community, asking God to do what He promised in Ezekiel — to remove the heart of stone and replace it with a heart of flesh.

  • Pray that every person in the group would grow in a genuine awareness of God's presence dwelling within them as His temple, and that this awareness would naturally shape the daily choices they make about what they allow into their eyes, ears, and minds.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Philippians 2:13 (NLT) "For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him."

The Power You've Been Missing

Matthew 5:8 — "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."

I'll be honest with you — when I first read the chapter title "The Power of Purity," I went looking for the power at the end. I skimmed right past it because it was sitting right there in the opening line. If your heart is pure, you see God. You know Him. He reveals Himself to you. And everything that flows from the Creator of the universe — all of His strength, His wisdom, His presence — becomes available to you. That is the power. We spend so much of our lives chasing influence, confidence, and strength through everything except the one thing that actually works. A pure heart is not about being perfect. It is about being connected. When we are connected to God, we are connected to the source of all power. Do not let another day go by without recognizing what a clean heart actually gives you access to.

Lord, I confess I have looked for power in all the wrong places. Today I come to You and ask You to purify my heart so that I can truly see You and know You. Thank You that Your presence is the greatest power I could ever have.

Write down one area of your life where you have been striving in your own strength, and pray specifically over it today, inviting God's power in.

God Is Working In You Right Now

Philippians 2:13 — "For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him."

One of the things I want you to hold onto this week is this — you are not alone in the fight to stay pure. God does not hand you a standard and then walk away. He gets inside the work with you. He gives you the desire first. That means if you are reading this and something in you is stirring, something in you wants to do better and be better, that is not just your own motivation. That is God working in you. He plants the desire and then He gives you the power to follow through. A lot of us feel like purity is this impossible mountain we have to climb on our own. But the truth is, He is already in you, already moving, already equipping you. Your job is to stay surrendered and let Him do what He does best. You are not fighting alone.

Father, thank You for not leaving me to figure this out by myself. I surrender my will to You today and ask You to keep stirring in me the desire to please You. Give me the power to follow through on what You are already putting in my heart.

Before you open your phone this morning, take two minutes to simply ask God what He wants to do in you today and then listen quietly.

Your Conscience Is Your Filter

1 Timothy 4:2 — "Speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron."

On Sunday I used the image of a water filter, and I want to come back to it today because I think it matters more than we realize. Your conscience is like a filter for your spirit. Every day, through your eyes, your ears, and your words, stuff is coming in. Your conscience is meant to catch what does not belong. But here is the problem — filters do not last forever, and they break down faster when we dump the wrong things through them. When we are scrolling mindlessly, watching things we should not be watching, letting stories wash over us without any intentionality, we are working that filter to death. And a seared conscience does not scream at you that something is wrong. It just goes quiet. That quietness is dangerous. We have to stay sensitive to the Holy Spirit speaking inside us, and that means being careful and intentional about what we let in.

Holy Spirit, I ask You to keep my conscience alive and sensitive. Show me where I have been careless about what I let into my heart and mind, and help me to be intentional today. I do not want to become numb to Your voice.

Go through your social media follows today and unfollow at least one account that regularly pulls your heart away from what is good and pure.

The Five R's That Change Everything

Hebrews 10:22 — "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water."

Repentance is not a punishment. It is a gift. On Sunday I walked through what I called the five R's of repentance — realistic recognition, regretful remorse, requesting God's grace, renouncing the sin, and making restitution where needed. Every single one of those steps is God giving us a way back. We avoid repentance because we do not want to face the consequence, or we do not want to admit we were wrong, or we are afraid that the other person will not forgive us. But here is what I know — the longer we wait, the harder our heart gets and the further we drift. The faster we repent, the faster we get back into the power of a pure heart. A clean conscience is not something we earn. It is something we receive when we come honestly before God and let Him do what only He can do.

Lord, I come to You honestly today. I do not want to carry what I should have laid down a long time ago. Help me to repent quickly and fully, and thank You that You are always ready to restore me.

Work through the five R's privately today regarding one specific thing you know you need to bring before God. Write it out if that helps you stay honest.

You Are the Temple

Galatians 6:7 — "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap."

Here is what I want to leave you with as you head into the weekend. The same God whose presence was so holy that priests were afraid to walk into the temple without being completely clean — that same God now lives inside of you. You are the temple. That is not a small thing. That is the great mystery of the New Testament. The Spirit that raised Christ from the dead is in you right now. So when we marginalize our sin, when we say God does not see what we do in private, we are doing exactly what the people in Ezekiel's day said — the Lord does not see us. But He does see. And He loves us too much to pretend otherwise. He wants to dwell fully in us. The question is whether we are making space for Him. A pure heart makes that space. And that is the power that changes everything.

Lord, I am overwhelmed that You would choose to live inside of me. I want to honor that. Search my heart today and show me anything that is crowding out Your presence. I want to be a clean temple for You.

Before any screen time this weekend, spend five minutes reading Psalm 51 as a personal prayer, making David's words your own.
