The Extravagant Favor of God

Jerry Savelle · 2022-05-23

God's favor isn't just available, it's meant to be extravagant, unrestrained, and without limits. In this powerful opening night message, Jerry Savelle unpacks what it means to walk in the lavish, extraordinary favor of God and why 2022 is a season of unprecedented favor for the body of Christ.

"The Extravagant Favor of God" — Jerry Savelle

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Jerry Savelle taught that God's favor is not reserved for a select few but is available to every believer as a gift received at salvation, inseparably linked to the blessing of God. He defined extravagant favor using the Message Translation of Psalm 145:16 — that God lavishes His favor on all — meaning it operates without limits, boundaries, or restraint. He challenged the group to move beyond simply knowing about God's favor to actively believing for it, decreeing it, and expecting it to manifest in daily life.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Psalm 145:16 (King James Version)

"Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing."

3. ICE BREAKER

Think of a time when something good happened to you that you clearly did not arrange or earn yourself. How did it make you feel, and who did you tell about it?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Question 1 Pastor Jerry pointed out that many believers live and die without ever tapping into the favor of God, even though it became available to them the moment they were born again. Why do you think so many Christians are unaware that God's favor belongs to them? What might keep someone from walking in something they already possess?

Question 2 He described favor as working alongside blessing, saying the two are divinely connected and cannot truly be separated. How does your understanding of God's blessing change when you realize favor is part of the same package? Does that shift the way you approach your daily circumstances?

Question 3 Pastor Jerry made a distinction between being materialistic and simply receiving what God freely provides, noting that there is a difference between having something and something having you. Where do you think that line is, and how does a person know which side of it they are standing on?

Question 4 Job 22:28 says that when a person decrees a thing, it shall be established, and the Amplified Bible adds that the light of God's favor will shine upon their ways. Pastor Jerry has spoken about and expected favor for more than five decades and says it has become a common occurrence in his life as a result. What role does consistent, spoken declaration play in your own faith life, and is there an area where you have been silent that might need a different approach?

Question 5 Pastor Jerry shared the story of his great-aunt, who traced the Savelle family tree and told him there had never been a Savelle who lived the way he does, adding that the reason was simply that they did not know what he knows. He used that moment to suggest that any person can break the mold of their family's history through the favor of God. Is there a pattern in your own family background — financial, relational, or otherwise — that you sense God wants to interrupt through His favor? What would it look like to believe for that this year?

Question 6 Pastor Jerry opened the evening by sharing a prophetic word that included the phrase, "When others are having their worst of times, you will be having your best of times." How do you personally hold on to that kind of expectation during seasons when circumstances seem to be moving in the opposite direction? What does Psalm 27:13 suggest about the relationship between belief and endurance?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

Before the next group meeting, write out a short, specific prayer petition modeled on Job 22:28. Identify one area of life — a relationship, a financial need, a career situation, or a creative dream — and write down the exact outcome being believed for, the scriptures being stood on, and a brief declaration of God's favor over that situation. Bring it to the next meeting, not necessarily to share aloud, but simply as a tangible act of deciding and decreeing, as Pastor Jerry described.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each group member would move from a general awareness of God's favor to a specific, active expectation of it operating in their personal circumstances this week.

  • Pray over the particular doors that seem closed in the lives of group members — loans, job situations, family restoration, finances — asking God to let His open hand move on their behalf in ways that only He could arrange.

  • Pray that the group as a whole would develop the habit of speaking favor over their lives consistently, so that over time it becomes, as Pastor Jerry described, a common occurrence rather than a rare surprise.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Job 22:28 (Amplified Bible)

"You will also decide and decree a thing, and it will be established for you; and the light of God's favor will shine upon your ways."

His Hand Is Open Wide

Psalm 145:16 — "Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing."

I want you to sit with that image for a moment — God's hand, open wide, reaching toward you. Not a clenched fist, not a hand pulled back in hesitation, but an open hand ready to satisfy your desires. When I preached this on Monday, I talked about how the open hand of God signals something beyond ordinary provision. This is supernatural. This is extraordinary. This is the kind of supply that you cannot manufacture on your own, no matter how hard you work or how clever you are. I have walked in the favor of God for over fifty years, and I can tell you plainly — I did not earn any of it. It was given to me as a gift the moment I surrendered my life to Christ. That same gift is yours. The hand of God is not closed toward you. It is open, and it is reaching in your direction right now.

Father, I thank you that your hand is open toward me today. I choose to believe that you want to satisfy the desires of my heart, not just my needs. Help me walk in that truth all day long.

Write down one desire — not just a need — that you have been afraid to bring before God, and present it to Him in prayer today.

Grace That Leaves You Abundantly Supplied

2 Corinthians 8:9 — "For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich."

I love what the Amplified Bible does with this verse. It calls what Jesus did for us an act of kindness, gracious generosity, and undeserved favor — so that we might become abundantly supplied. Not barely supplied. Not just-enough supplied. Abundantly supplied. The word favor and the word grace are used interchangeably throughout the Bible, and when you understand that, this verse takes on a whole new meaning. Jesus did not go to the cross simply so you could survive. He went so you could thrive. I know there are people reading this who have been stuck in survival mode for a long time, and I want to tell you plainly — that is not the life Jesus purchased for you. He became poor so that you would not have to be. Abundantly supplied is your inheritance. Start receiving it like you believe it.

Jesus, thank you for what you sacrificed so I could live in abundance. I receive your grace and favor today as a gift I did not earn but gratefully accept. Let that reality change how I think and how I live.

Find one area of your life where you have been thinking in terms of "just enough," and consciously replace that thought today with the phrase "abundantly supplied."

The Blessing Is Already on You

Psalm 3:8 — "Salvation belongeth unto the Lord: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah."

Notice what this verse does not say. It does not say the blessing is coming to his people, or that the blessing is waiting for his people, or that the blessing is available if his people behave well enough. It says the blessing is upon his people — present tense, right now, already there. I have said this for decades and I will keep saying it: you cannot have the blessing of God without the favor of God. They are divinely connected. When you were born again, both arrived together as a gift. The tragedy is that most believers spend their entire lives trying to get something they already have. Stop begging God for favor and start walking in the favor you already possess. Selah — pause and think about that. You are not disqualified, you are not forgotten, and you are not the exception. If you belong to God, the blessing is on you.

Father, forgive me for the times I have begged for what you already placed on my life. Help me today to walk with the confidence of someone who carries your blessing and your favor. I am yours, and that changes everything.

Say out loud three times today, "The blessing and favor of God are already on my life," and mean it each time you say it.

Believe It Before You See It

Psalm 27:13 — "I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living."

David was not speaking from a comfortable place when he wrote this. He was under pressure. He was surrounded by enemies. He was in the kind of season that makes you want to give up. And he said plainly — I would have fainted if I had not believed first. He did not say he saw the goodness of God and then believed. He said he believed he would see it, and that belief is what kept him standing. That is the sequence. Belief comes before the evidence. I wake up every single morning expecting the favor of God to show up in some way before the day is over, and it does. Not because I am special, but because I have made a decision to believe it. You made a declaration earlier this week that you believe in extravagant favor. Now you have to hold on to that belief when the pressure of the day tries to talk you out of it. Do not faint. Believe first.

Lord, when the pressure of today makes me want to doubt, remind me of David's words. I choose to believe I will see your goodness before this week is through. Strengthen my heart as I wait on you.

When a discouraging thought comes today, respond to it out loud by saying, "I believe I will see the goodness of God in my situation."

Decree It and Watch It Become Common

Job 22:28 — "Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways."

The Amplified Bible opens that verse with a powerful word — decide. Thou wilt decide and decree a thing, and it shall be established. And then it closes with something I want you to carry into your weekend: the light of God's favor will shine upon your ways. Everything begins with a decision. I decided over fifty years ago to believe what God said about favor, and I have been decreeing it ever since. The literal Hebrew meaning of "established" in this verse suggests that if you speak something consistently enough, it eventually becomes a common occurrence in your life. Favor has become common in my life not because I got lucky, but because I have been decreeing it daily for decades. You started this week learning about extravagant favor. Now let it become something you speak every single day — in your car, at your table, before you sleep. Decide it. Decree it. Watch it become yours.

Father, I make a decision today to decree your favor over my life, my family, my work, and my future. Let the light of your favor shine on everything I put my hand to. I will not stop saying what I believe.

Write out a short personal declaration of favor — three sentences is enough — and speak it aloud every morning next week without missing a day.
