Break The Power of Debt

Small Group Discussion Guide

Based on the teaching by Dr. John Avanzini

1. SERMON RECAP

Dr. John Avanzini shared a powerful account of a life-changing encounter with God in Abba, Nigeria, where he received a message about financial freedom and the true purpose of the offering. He explained that the tithe, while essential, places a believer only "one step ahead of the birds" through addition, whereas a Spirit-led offering unlocks multiplication — thirtyfold, sixtyfold, and hundredfold increase. He challenged the congregation to recognize that consumer debt is the primary barrier keeping American Christians from hearing and responding to God's voice in the area of finances.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Mark 4:24-25 (KJV)

"And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall be given. For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath."

3. ICE BREAKER

Think back to when you were a child — what did you believe about money and where it came from? Did your family talk about money openly or keep it a private subject?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Understanding the Tithe vs. The Offering Dr. Avanzini drew a clear distinction between the tithe and the offering, describing the tithe as belonging to God already and the offering as the believer's own money surrendered back to God. How does that distinction change the way you personally think about what you put in the offering plate each week?

2. The "Understanding" Principle Dr. Avanzini pointed to Mark 4:24 and emphasized that the word "hear" carries the deeper meaning of "understand," arguing that the measure of understanding a person brings to their giving directly affects their financial harvest. What would it look like practically for someone to grow in their understanding of biblical giving rather than simply giving out of habit or obligation?

3. The Debt Problem He described consumer debt as a kind of "cattle prod" that makes people flinch and shut down whenever the topic of money and giving comes up in church. Do you think that rings true in your own experience or in the broader culture? Why do you think debt has such a strong emotional hold on people, even believers?

4. Hearing God in the Offering Dr. Avanzini recounted how, after his encounter in Nigeria, he began teaching people to ask God specifically what amount to give in the offering rather than deciding on their own. What would it require — spiritually and practically — for someone to genuinely pause before giving and ask God what He wants them to give? What might make that feel uncomfortable or even strange?

5. The Nigeria Account and Obedience He described the dramatic offering in Abba, Nigeria, where people ran forward to add money because they had not initially obeyed what God had spoken to them about giving. He also noted that God told him He cannot multiply disobedience. What does that principle stir up in you personally? Have you ever sensed God prompting you toward a financial step and pulled back? What happened?

6. Moving from Addition to Multiplication Dr. Avanzini described three levels of financial relationship with God — the tithe (addition), the offering (multiplication), and the steward (everything belonging to God). Which of these levels most honestly describes where you are right now, and what feels like the next step for you?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

Before the next time your group meets, set aside five quiet minutes before your next church service or giving moment. Write down the amount you were planning to give, then pray and ask God specifically whether that amount is what He wants from you. Write down whatever impression comes to mind, even if it feels uncertain. Bring your notes to the next group meeting and share, if you are willing, what the experience was like — not necessarily the amount, but whether asking God felt natural or awkward, and why.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each group member would develop a growing sensitivity to God's voice in the specific area of financial giving, and that fear, habit, or debt pressure would not drown out what He is saying.

  • Pray for practical wisdom and courage for anyone in the group who is currently carrying significant debt, that they would find a clear and realistic path forward rather than feeling hopeless or ashamed.

  • Pray that the congregation as a whole would move from viewing the offering as a routine church activity into understanding it as a genuine act of partnership with God that carries real spiritual and material consequences.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Mark 4:24 (KJV)

"Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall be given."

Leader Note: Dr. Avanzini acknowledged that some of these ideas feel unfamiliar or even unsettling, particularly for people carrying financial stress. Create space for honest, unhurried conversation. The goal of this discussion is not to pressure anyone toward a specific giving decision but to help each person think more carefully and prayerfully about the connection between obedience, understanding, and God's provision in their lives.

The Ground Your Seed Falls Into

Mark 4:20 — "And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred."

I want to take you back to something I shared on Sunday about the farmer who has fifty years of experience versus the brand-new believer who just bought the land next door. Same seed, same soil, same fertilizer — but the experienced farmer brings in a far greater harvest. Why? Understanding. Not education. Not luck. Understanding. Jesus makes this so clear in Mark 4. The word you receive, the seed you plant, the offering you bring — none of it works at full power without understanding what you are actually doing and why. This week, I want you to stop treating your giving as a transaction and start treating it as a conversation with God. When you understand what the seed is for, the ground changes. And when the ground changes, so does the harvest.

Lord, give me ears to truly hear what you are saying about my finances and my giving. I want to understand, not just go through the motions. Open the good ground in me this week.

Read Mark 4:1-20 slowly and write down one thing you have never noticed before about the different types of soil.

The Candle That Must Not Stay Hidden

Proverbs 20:27 — "The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly."

On Sunday I pointed to this verse right in the middle of a teaching about seed and harvest, and I know it seemed like a strange turn. But Jesus himself makes this connection in Mark 4 — he moves from talking about soil and seed directly into talking about a candle on a candlestick. The reason is simple. You cannot understand what God is doing in your finances if your spirit is hidden under a bushel. The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord. God searches you, leads you, and speaks to you through that candle. But if debt has covered it, if fear has covered it, if habit has covered it, that light is dim. I want you to let God lift the bushel this week. Let him search the inward parts. Let the candle burn where it was always meant to burn — out in the open, guiding every financial decision you make.

Father, search me. Let my spirit be open to your leading and not buried under worry or debt or old habits. I want to be a candle on a candlestick, not hidden away.

Sit quietly for five minutes before any financial decision today and ask God, "What do you want me to do here?" Then listen before you act.

One Step Ahead of the Birds

Mark 4:24 — "And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given."

I said something on Sunday that I want you to sit with today. When you tithe, you are one step ahead of the birds. Just one step. The tithe opens the windows of heaven, yes. It connects you to the covenant of God, yes. But what comes through those open windows is addition — things being added to you one at a time. That is beautiful and it is real and it matters. But it is not multiplication. Jesus says in Mark 4 that what you understand, what you truly grasp about giving, sets the measure of what comes back. If you understand only the tithe, you live in addition. If you understand the offering — and let God lead you in it — you step into multiplication. Thirty, sixty, a hundred times over. I am not asking you to abandon the tithe. I am asking you to take the next step beyond it.

God, I am grateful for every way you have added to my life through my faithfulness in tithing. Now I want to understand the offering the way you meant it. Teach me the difference between addition and multiplication.

Look at your giving envelope or record and ask yourself honestly: do you tithe faithfully, and do you give a separate, prayerfully considered offering? If not, make a plan to start this week.

God Is Not Trying to Get Money From You

Mark 4:26-27 — "And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; and should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how."

I want to say to you again what God said to me in that room in Abba, Nigeria, because it changed everything for me. He said, John, I am not trying to get money from my people. I am trying to get money to my people. Read that again slowly. God is not standing over your wallet. He is trying to get resources into your hands so that you are prepared for what is coming. The seed you plant in the ground does its work while you sleep. You do not have to manage the miracle. You do not have to figure out how it multiplies. Your job is to plant what God tells you to plant, in the amount he tells you to plant it, and then trust him with the harvest. The debt and the fear and the habit of holding back — those are the things that keep you from planting. And a seed that never gets planted never grows.

Lord, forgive me for the times I have held back because I was afraid. I trust that you are for me, not against me, and that every seed I plant in obedience will grow in ways I cannot manufacture on my own.

Write down one area of your finances where you have been holding back out of fear. Bring it specifically to God in prayer today and ask him what he wants you to do about it.

Ask Before You Give

Mark 4:28 — "For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear."

There is a sequence to harvest. The blade comes first, then the ear, then the full corn. You do not skip steps, and you do not rush the ground. But you do have to put the seed in. On Sunday I asked everyone in the room to stop before they gave and simply ask God what he wanted the offering to be. Not what they could afford. Not what felt comfortable. What God said. That is the moment everything changes. Because when God tells you what to give, he has already seen what is coming in your life. He knows the hot water heater that will fail, the car repair, the medical bill, the opportunity that will need capital behind it. The offering you make today in obedience is the harvest you will walk into tomorrow when you need it most. This is not about an amount. It is about a conversation. Start that conversation today, and do not stop having it every single week for the rest of your life.

Father, I want to be the kind of giver who asks you first. Speak to me clearly about what my offering should be, and give me the courage to do exactly what you say, even when the number surprises me.

Before your next church offering, stop and pray specifically: "God, what do you want me to give?" Write the amount down, and give that amount in faith.
