Accessing the Provision of God

Pastor Willie Russell · 2025-08-06

What does it actually take to unlock God's provision in your life? In this message, Pastor Willie Russell breaks down the principle of provision straight from Scripture and reveals why the blockage is almost never on God's end. This is a word that will challenge how you think about ownership, obedience, and the fear of the Lord.

"Accessing the Provision of God" — Pastor Willie Russell

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Willie Russell unpacked what it truly means to access the provision of God, using Abraham's near-sacrifice of Isaac in Genesis 22 as the foundation for a principle that runs throughout Scripture: God provides for himself, but he does it through willing people. He challenged the group to examine whether their understanding of provision has been too narrow, reducing it to finances alone when God's provision covers every area of life including time, freedom, peace, and joy. He made clear that the flow of God's provision is not blocked on God's end, but is often stopped up on ours when we fail to hold in genuine reverence what God has asked of us.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 9:10

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."

3. ICE BREAKER

What is one area of your life — besides money — that you find it genuinely difficult to hand over control of, and why do you think that particular area is such a tough one to let go?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Pastor Willie introduced what he called the Principle of Provision: God provides for himself, but he does it through people, and the more a person demonstrates willingness to give back what God has given, the more God entrusts to them. How does this principle change the way your group thinks about stewardship beyond the topic of tithing?

2. He pointed out that in Genesis 22, the angel did not say Abraham passed the test because of his love for God or even his obedience alone, but specifically because he feared God. What is the difference, practically speaking, between loving God and fearing God? Can a person genuinely have one without the other?

3. Pastor Willie said that many Christians treat the commands of God as multiple-choice suggestions rather than as things they hold in genuine awe and respect. Where do you personally notice that tendency showing up most in your own life, and what do you think drives it?

4. Walking through the feeding of the five thousand in Luke 9, he identified five steps: the disciples had something God needed, they gave it up even though it was all they had, Jesus looked to heaven, he gave it back to them, and there were twelve baskets left over. Which of those five steps is the hardest for most people to trust, and why?

5. Pastor Willie made the point that 2 Peter 1:3 says God has already given believers everything they need for life and godliness, which means the provision is not the problem. If that is true, what does your group think are the most common reasons people still feel like they are living in lack?

6. He described the enemy as a devourer who has legal ground to operate when believers are not walking in obedience to the covenant, and said that God rebukes the devourer specifically on behalf of those who are obedient. How does thinking about spiritual opposition in this way shift the way your group approaches financial or personal struggles?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

Before the group meets again, each person should identify one specific area of provision they have been praying about and honestly write down one corresponding thing God may be asking of them that they have been slow to give. It does not have to be money. It could be time, availability, a conversation, attendance at a service, or a relationship. The challenge is simply to name both things on paper, pray over them once each day this week, and come prepared to share what that exercise surfaced.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each person in the group would develop a genuine, growing fear of the Lord that moves them to obey not out of guilt but out of deep reverence and trust.

  • Pray for specific breakthrough in the area of provision that feels most stuck for each member of the group, and ask God to reveal any area of the covenant where they need to take a step of obedience.

  • Pray for the ministry as a whole, that the people of God would understand and walk in this principle of provision so that the work of the kingdom is never held back for lack of resources.

7. MEMORY VERSE

2 Peter 1:3

"His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness."

Everything Belongs to Him

1 Corinthians 4:2 — "Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful."

On Wednesday, I told the congregation something that sounds simple but cuts deep: nothing you have actually belongs to you. Your house, your car, your time, your health — none of it is yours. God gave it to you, and at any moment, He can ask for it back. That is not a threat. That is actually the most freeing truth you will ever encounter. When I stopped gripping my things so tightly, I stopped being anxious about losing them. Stewardship is impossible when you still think you own something. You cannot manage someone else's estate while pretending it is yours. Abraham understood this. He walked up that mountain knowing Isaac was a gift, and he held that gift with an open hand. That is what faithfulness looks like — not white-knuckling your blessings, but holding them loosely before the God who gave them.

Lord, help me release the grip I have on the things I call mine. Remind me today that I am a steward, not an owner, and that Your faithfulness is more secure than anything I could hold onto.

Identify one thing you have been treating as fully yours — your schedule, your finances, a relationship — and consciously say aloud, "This belongs to God."

The Fear That Opens Heaven

Proverbs 9:10 — "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."

When I shared this on Wednesday, I was honest with myself in front of everyone. I said that I am a control freak. I love my freedom. And when God starts asking for pieces of it, my first instinct is to negotiate. But the Angel of the Lord did not say to Abraham, "I see how much you love Me." He said, "Now I know that you fear God." It was the fear — the deep reverence, the holy awe — that moved Abraham up that mountain with a knife in his hand. Fear of God is not cowering in a corner. It is taking what God says seriously enough to actually do it. Not as a suggestion. Not when it is convenient. If I am honest, a lot of my spiritual struggle comes down to one question: do I really fear God, or do I just know about Him?

Father, grow in me a genuine reverence for You — not religion, but real awe. Let my obedience come from a place of holy respect, not obligation or fear of punishment.

Read one passage of scripture today and ask yourself honestly, "Am I treating this as a command or a suggestion?" Write down your answer.

He Has Already Provided

2 Peter 1:3 — "His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue."

This verse wrecked me when I was preparing this message. It says God has already given us everything we need for life and godliness. Everything. So when I come to God saying I need more peace, more provision, more healing, I am not asking Him to create something new. I am asking for access to what is already there. The issue is never on God's end. The provision exists. What blocks the flow is me — my unbelief, my disobedience, my refusal to do my part in the covenant. Your circumstances do not cancel the word. You did not create the word; your circumstances have to line up with it. That shift in perspective — from looking at what I see in the natural to what God has already declared in the spirit — is where everything changes. Look up, the way Abraham did, and you will see what was there all along.

Lord, I confess I have been looking at my circumstances instead of Your word. Shift my perspective today. Help me to see from the spirit what You have already declared to be true.

Write down one need you have been anxious about, then write beside it one scripture that addresses that specific need. Spend two minutes meditating on the scripture instead of the need.

Give It Back and Watch It Multiply

Genesis 22:13 — "Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son."

I love this moment. Abraham did not see the ram until he lifted his eyes. The provision was already there — he just could not see it while he was focused on what he was about to lose. And that is the principle I shared on Wednesday: God provides for Himself, but He does it through you. He gives something to you, He asks for it back, and when you release it into His hands, that is when multiplication begins. The disciples handed over five loaves and two fish — everything they had — and it was not until they started giving it out that it multiplied. God did not roll in a wheelbarrow. He gave back only what they could carry, and as they gave, there was always more. The miracle does not start when you hold on. It starts when you let go.

Jesus, I want to be someone who gives freely what You have given me. Help me trust that when I release it into Your hands, You will do what I never could on my own.

Find one practical way to give something away today — time, encouragement, money, a meal — and do it without expecting anything in return.

He Will Rebuke the Devourer For You

Malachi 3:10 — "Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it."

I said on Wednesday that this is a layup — if we are only talking about money. But the deeper principle is what I want you to carry into your weekend. When you are faithful to do your part, God steps into battles you do not even know are happening. He rebukes the devourer for you. That means He is actively fighting on your behalf because He knows He can count on you. There is a devourer at work — the enemy who is perfectly happy to let your car break down, your health decline, your peace drain away. But an obedient, covenant-keeping life puts God between you and that attack. You are not fighting alone. You are covered because He can trust that what He gives you, you will hold with an open hand. That is the life God is inviting you into — not a life of scarcity, but of secured, sustained, multiplied provision.

Lord, I want to be someone You can count on. Teach me to be faithful in every area — not just finances — so that I can live under Your open heaven. Cover what belongs to You.

Before the weekend, review one area of your life — time, money, or service — where you have been holding back from God. Make one concrete decision to step toward faithfulness in that area starting today.
