Building What Hell Can't Break

Pastor Chris Hufton · 2025-10-05

Your spirit is either being built or being broken, and the choice is yours. In this message, I walk you through the biblical blueprint for developing a strong spirit that can withstand every attack of the enemy, every wave of life, and every lie the devil throws your way. This isn't about waiting for the next guest speaker to lay hands on you, it's about what you're doing every single day to build something hell can't touch.

Building What Hell Can't Break

Small Group Discussion Guide

A sermon by Pastor Chris Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Chris Hufton opened with a direct challenge: building a strong spirit is not something that happens by accident — it is a deliberate, daily decision. He walked the group through three enemies of a strong spirit that the enemy uses to keep believers weak and ineffective. Drawing on vivid illustrations about physical fitness, construction, and everyday life, Pastor Chris called every believer to stop waiting for the next special church service to receive strength and to start building that strength from the inside out.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 18:14 (NLT) "The human spirit can endure a sick body, but who can bear a crushed spirit?"

3. ICE BREAKER

Think of a time when you pushed yourself to do something physically or mentally difficult and surprised yourself with how strong you actually were. What was that experience like?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Point 1 — The Flesh (We All See It)

Pastor Chris described the flesh as the enemy of a strong spirit because it constantly pulls a person back toward comfort, distraction, and compromise. He compared an undisciplined spiritual life to someone showing up to a new job with no knowledge of the schedule, the uniform, or the expectations — stumbling through rather than standing strong.

Discussion Question: Where in your life right now is comfort or distraction quietly winning over the discipline your spirit actually needs, and what makes it so easy to let that slide week after week?

Point 2 — Accusation

Pastor Chris explained that the devil, as the accuser of the brethren, works through condemnation and comparison to make believers feel disqualified and hopeless. He drew a clear line between the Holy Spirit's conviction — which draws a person back toward God — and the enemy's condemnation, which pushes a person away.

Discussion Question: How do you personally tell the difference between the Holy Spirit convicting you about something and the enemy simply condemning you, and what has helped you respond well when those voices sound similar?

Point 3 — Praying in the Spirit

Pastor Chris pointed to praying in the Holy Spirit as one of the four foundations of a strong spirit, noting that Romans 8 teaches the Spirit prays through believers in ways that align perfectly with God's will even when they do not know what to ask for. He encouraged the group to begin with a consistent, manageable habit rather than waiting until they feel spiritually ready.

Discussion Question: What practical obstacles most often keep you from making prayer in the Spirit a regular rhythm in your week, and what would it look like to remove just one of those obstacles starting now?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

Choose one specific time slot this week — morning, lunch break, or before bed — and commit to spending ten uninterrupted minutes praying out loud, speaking a promise from Scripture over your situation, and thanking God for at least one concrete thing before asking for anything. Write down what you notice about your spirit by the end of the week and bring that observation back to the group.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each group member would develop the courage and consistency to discipline their flesh through daily time in the Word, prayer, and fasting, even when it is inconvenient.
  • Pray for anyone in the group who has been living under the weight of condemnation, that they would experience the truth of Romans 8:1 and walk in the freedom Christ has already secured for them.
  • Pray for a fresh hunger and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, that praying in the Spirit would become a natural, life-giving habit rather than an occasional emergency measure.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Hebrews 4:16 (NLT) "So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most."

Know Your Enemy's Playbook

Galatians 5:16 — "I say then walk in the spirit and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh."

On Sunday I talked about the three enemies of a strong spirit, and the first one is the most obvious — your flesh. I want you to sit with that today. Your flesh doesn't announce itself as a problem. It just whispers, "not today," "you deserve a break," "it doesn't really matter." And before you know it, days have gone by without prayer, without the Word, without any real connection to God. Comfort is the flesh's favorite disguise. Nobody accidentally stumbles into spiritual strength, just like nobody accidentally runs a marathon. You build it. You choose it. Every single day. The good news is God is not asking you to be perfect — he is asking you to walk. One step at a time, in the direction of his Spirit. When you feel the pull of your flesh today, recognize it for what it is, and take one deliberate step the other way.

Lord, I know my flesh is loud and my spirit sometimes feels quiet. Help me today to choose you over comfort, to walk in your Spirit even when everything in me wants to sit down. Thank you that your grace is bigger than my weakness.

Identify one comfort habit today that has been quietly pulling you away from God, and replace it with ten minutes of prayer or Scripture reading.

The Accuser Is Lying to You

Romans 8:1 — "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

On Sunday I told you that the devil is the accuser of the brethren. He is not creative — he uses the same tired strategy every time. He points at your failures, your past, your weaknesses, and he says, "People like you don't get to do great things for God." He gets you comparing your race to someone else's and feeling condemned before you have even taken a step. Here is what I want you to know today: condemnation is from hell, but conviction is from the Holy Spirit. The difference is this — conviction brings you back to God, while condemnation pushes you away. When the Holy Spirit puts his finger on something in your life, it is not to destroy you, it is to free you. The accuser wants you paralyzed. God wants you moving. Speak back to those lying voices today. You are who Christ says you are, and that is more than enough.

Father, thank you that there is no condemnation for me in Christ. When the enemy whispers that I am too far gone or not enough, help me to speak your truth right back at him. I receive your grace today.

Write down one lie the enemy has been repeating to you, then find and write one scripture that directly contradicts it and speak it out loud.

Saturate Yourself in the Word

Jeremiah 15:16 — "When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart's delight, for I bear your name, O Lord, God of heaven's armies."

I said on Sunday that God's Word is your protein. You cannot bulk up your spirit on garbage any more than you can build a healthy body on fast food. What you feed yourself determines what your reflexes become. If you are feeding on fear, your reflex is fear. If you are feeding on doubt, your reflex is doubt. But when you saturate yourself in what God says — when you actually know his promises — then when a lie shows up, something rises up in you and says, "No, that is not true for me." I have been in seasons of my life where I gave myself fully to studying the Word, and I want to tell you, that bread fed me even years later. You may not see the fruit immediately. But what you put in today is going to hold you up when the storm arrives. And the storm will arrive. Get the weight below the waterline now.

Lord, give me a hunger for your Word like Jeremiah had — a hunger that treats Scripture like something I cannot afford to go without. Let what I read today get deep into my spirit and stay there. I want your truth to be my first reflex.

Pick one short New Testament letter — Philippians, Ephesians, or Titus — and read through it in one sitting today, even if it takes only fifteen minutes.

Pray Until Something Happens

Jude 20 — "But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith, pray in the power of the Holy Spirit."

On Sunday I talked about praying in the spirit as one of the four foundations of a strong spirit, and I want to camp here for a moment because this one is so easy to skip. We treat prayer like an emergency line — something we reach for only when things go wrong. But praying in the spirit is daily maintenance. It is how you build. Romans 8 tells us that the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness and prays through us when we do not even know what to say. That means you are never in a situation where you have nothing to offer in prayer. Even when life feels confusing or heavy, the Spirit himself is interceding. Your confidence grows in prayer. Your discernment sharpens. Your peace deepens. The inner witness that tells you something is right or wrong gets stronger. Start small if you need to. Ten minutes. But do it today, and do it tomorrow, and do not stop.

Holy Spirit, I invite you to pray through me today. I do not always know what I need or what to ask, but you do. Help me to be faithful and consistent in this, and let my spirit grow stronger every time I come to you.

Set a timer for ten minutes and pray in the Spirit or speak honest, simple prayers to God out loud — no phone, no distractions, just you and him.

Praise Is a Weapon

Nehemiah 8:10 — "The joy of the Lord is your strength."

I want to close this week with something practical and powerful. On Sunday I told you that praise confuses the enemy. When calamity shows up and you respond with worship instead of panic, it throws hell off completely. Praise is not pretending everything is fine. It is making a decision that God is still God even when things are not fine. I shared on Sunday how I picked up a habit while working in Uganda of just speaking praise constantly — hallelujah, praise God, thank you Lord — and how it changed the atmosphere around me. Isaiah 61 talks about God giving us a garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. You put it on. It is a choice. If your spirit has felt heavy this week, if discouragement has been sitting on your chest, I want to challenge you today to open your mouth and praise God anyway. Not because the feeling is there, but because he is worthy and because your strength depends on it.

Father, I choose today to put on the garment of praise. Even where things are hard, even where I am waiting, I praise you because you are good and because your joy is my strength. Thank you for not leaving me to fight alone.

At three different points today — morning, midday, and evening — stop what you are doing and speak praise out loud for one minute, thanking God specifically for something he has done in your life.
