No Greater Love
When a tornado tore through a Midwest farming community, parents with no time to escape laid their bodies over their infant daughter. Both died. Their child survived. Pastor Mirek Hufton used this devastating true story to illustrate the central truth of this message: that is precisely what Jesus did for every human being on the cross. Pastor Hufton makes clear that Jesus chose the cross, love, not Roman soldiers, drove the nails. As fully God and fully man, Christ descended from the highest height to the lowest depth, bearing sin, sickness, and spiritual separation from the Father so we would never have to. When Jesus cried "It is finished!", the Greek tetelestai, it meant paid in full, permanently and completely. Sin, death, sickness, and bondage lost their legal hold on humanity that day. The challenge for every believer is to stop living as though the debt hasn't been paid.

In this powerful message, I walked us through the breathtaking reality of what Jesus willingly sacrificed when He came to earth and went to the cross for every one of us. Jesus — who is fully God, who existed before creation itself — chose to humble Himself completely, becoming fully human and bearing our sin, sickness, and spiritual death so that we could go free. Because of what He accomplished at the cross, we can live in the truth of those three world-changing words: it is finished.

1. Getting into it In the sermon, I shared the story of the parents in the Midwest who died shielding their baby from a tornado. What does that image stir up in you, and how does it help you picture what Jesus chose to do for us on the cross?
2. Digging deeper into love Romans 5:8 tells us "while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." He didn't wait until we got our act together. How does that change the way you personally receive God's love — or does it? Be honest!
3. Wrestling with the mystery I talked about the mystery of Jesus being fully God and fully man at the same time — and how He went from the highest heights to the lowest depths for us. Does that kind of sacrifice make God feel more real and relatable to you, or does it raise more questions? What questions do you still sit with?
4. "It is finished" — what does that mean for your life? When Jesus cried out "It is finished," I explained that sin, death, fear, sickness, and lack were all addressed at the cross. Is there an area of your life where you're still living as though it isn't finished — still straining under something Jesus already paid for? What would it look like to actually believe it's been paid in full?
5. Love that costs something 1 John 3:16 doesn't stop at Jesus laying down His life — it says we also ought to lay down our lives for one another. What does that kind of sacrificial, others-focused love look like practically in your relationships right now? Where does it feel easy, and where does it feel genuinely costly?
6. The cross as reality, not just doctrine I said in the sermon: "If it's just a thought, if it's just a doctrine, it has no power — it's gotta be a reality." What's the difference between knowing about the cross in your head and actually living from it in your heart? Has there been a moment in your life when the cross shifted from information to transformation?
5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE
This week, choose one specific area where fear, guilt, or a persistent struggle has had a grip on you — something you've been carrying as though it hasn't already been dealt with at the cross. Write it down on a piece of paper, and then write "IT IS FINISHED — PAID IN FULL" over it in bold letters. Put it somewhere you'll see it every day (your mirror, your phone wallpaper, your desk). Each time you see it, speak this out loud: "Jesus bore this for me. I don't have to carry it anymore." Come back next week ready to share what happened.

Revelation over information — Pray that the sacrifice of Jesus moves from head knowledge into a deep, life-changing heart reality for every person in your group this week.

Freedom from fear and bondage — Pray specifically against the spirit of fear that tries to keep us living as though the cross didn't work — ask God to help each person walk in the freedom Jesus already purchased for them.

A fresh gratitude for the cross — Ask the Holy Spirit to give your group a renewed sense of awe and thankfulness for what Jesus willingly gave up to come to this earth and go to Calvary for each of us personally.

Love That Chose the Cross
1 John 3:16 — "By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren."
I want you to really sit with this today — Jesus did not have to die. He chose to. The force behind those nails wasn't an angry mob or a Roman soldier. It was love. Pure, deliberate, unshakeable love for you and me. I think about that couple in the Midwest who laid their bodies over their baby girl as the tornado hit. They chose sacrifice. That's a powerful picture, but even that doesn't come close to what Jesus did. He stepped down from the heights of glory, took on human flesh, and walked straight into suffering — for us. Not because He had to. Because He wanted to. That kind of love demands a response from me. It should change how I live, how I treat people, and how I see myself. You are worth dying for. Jesus proved it.
Jesus, thank You for choosing the cross for me. Help me to never take that choice lightly. Let Your love change the way I live today.
While We Were Still Sinners
Romans 5:8 — "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
Here's what gets me every time I read this verse — God didn't wait until we cleaned ourselves up. He didn't wait until we had our act together or proved we were worthy. While we were still a mess, while sin was still running our lives, Jesus went to that cross. That's the kind of love that breaks religious thinking wide open. Religion says, "Get right, then come to God." But the Gospel says, "Come as you are, because God already came to you." I don't care what your past looks like. I don't care what you did last week. The cross was for you — specifically, personally, completely. When Jesus cried out "It is finished!" He meant it. Your debt was paid in full. Not partially. Fully. You don't have to earn what's already been freely given. Receive it today.
Father, I'm amazed that You loved me before I ever loved You. Help me to receive that love fully today, without guilt or shame holding me back.
The Exact Image of Love
Hebrews 1:3 — "He is the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power."
When Philip said to Jesus, "Show us the Father," Jesus replied simply, "If you've seen me, you've seen the Father." I love that. Jesus wasn't just a good teacher or a moral example — He was God walking among us in human skin, revealing what the Father is actually like. And what did we see? We saw love healing the sick. Love forgiving the adulteress. Love weeping at a tomb. Love feeding thousands. Love washing dirty feet. Jesus was the Father's expression of love to a broken world. And here's what that means for you today — when you look at Jesus, you're seeing exactly how your heavenly Father feels about you. Not distant. Not angry. Not disappointed. The Father sent His very best because you are worth His very best. That's not theology. That's your reality.
Lord, open my eyes to see You clearly today. Let me see Your face and know that it's full of love for me personally.
It Is Finished — And That Means Everything
Hebrews 10:14 — "For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified."
When Jesus cried out "It is finished" from the cross, that Greek word — tetelestai — was a word used in the marketplace. It meant "paid in full." I want you to grasp what was finished that day. Sin's power over you — finished. Satan's legal claim on your life — finished. Sickness bearing your name — finished. Poverty written into your story — finished. Fear ruling your decisions — finished. The veil tearing from top to bottom wasn't just dramatic — it was God saying, "Nothing separates us anymore." Jesus didn't die to give you a slightly better life. He died to completely undo everything the enemy built against you. Sometimes we live like the debt is still on the table, like we still owe something. But I'm telling you today — it's paid. Walk in that. Stop negotiating with the enemy over a bill that's already been cancelled.
Jesus, help me to actually live like the debt is paid. Wherever I've been bowing to fear or shame, I choose today to stand in what You finished.
Reigning in Life Through His Love
Romans 5:17 — "For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ."
I want to end this week with this truth burning in your heart — you were not designed to be dominated. You were designed to reign. When Jesus rose from that grave, He didn't just defeat death for Himself. He opened a door for every one of us to walk through. The same resurrection power that raised Jesus from the dead is alive in you right now. Death reigned through Adam. But life, grace, and righteousness reign through Jesus. That means fear doesn't get the final word in your home. Sickness doesn't get to write your future. Lack doesn't define your story. You are a child of the Living God, blood-bought and Spirit-filled. This isn't just inspiration — this is your inheritance. Receive it. Walk in it. And let the world around you see what a life fully surrendered to the love of God actually looks like.
Father, I receive my inheritance today. I choose to reign in life through Jesus Christ — not in my own strength, but through Your grace and love living in me.
