Faith That Overcomes

Pastor Mirek Hufton · 2025-10-26

Overcoming isn't optional, it's your inheritance as a child of God. In this powerful message, Pastor Mirek unpacks what it truly means to live by overcoming faith, why Jesus expects every believer to conquer the challenges life throws at them, and how faith in Jesus Christ is the one force that defeats everything the enemy sends your way.

Faith That Overcomes

Small Group Discussion Guide

Based on the sermon by Pastor Mirek Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Mirek Hufton drew from 1 John 5:4-5 to establish that every person born of God carries the DNA of victory and is called to live as an overcomer in every area of life. He challenged the congregation that overcoming is not optional for the believer but is an expectation of God, with remarkable rewards promised in Revelation 2 and 3 for those who press through. He reminded the group that overcoming happens through active faith in Jesus Christ, the Living Word, and a courageous refusal to accept defeat as a final word over any situation.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

1 John 5:4-5 (NKJV)

"For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?"

3. ICE BREAKER

Think of a time when you were the underdog in something, a competition, a challenge, a difficult season, and things turned out better than you expected. What did that feel like?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Understanding the Inheritance Pastor Mirek emphasized that overcoming is not a personality trait reserved for certain kinds of Christians, it is the inheritance of every believer. How does it change the way you approach a difficult situation when you see overcoming as your God-given right rather than a distant possibility?

2. Tribulation vs. Defeat In John 16:33, Jesus acknowledged that tribulation is a real part of life in this world, but He immediately followed that with the instruction to "be of good cheer." Pastor Mirek explained that the Greek word for "cheer" here carries the meaning of courage. What is the difference between pretending everything is fine and genuinely choosing courage in the middle of a hard season? How does a person practically get there?

3. The Lordship Question Pastor Mirek explained that when a person confesses Jesus as Lord, they are making a transfer, moving out from under the lordship of the enemy and into the Lordship of Jesus Christ. He noted that the enemy will take any ground a believer gives him by operating purely in the natural rather than by the Word. Where in your own life do you notice yourself defaulting to emotional or circumstantial thinking rather than what the Word of God actually says about your situation?

4. The Power of What We Feed Ourselves Pastor Mirek was direct about the connection between what believers consistently feed their minds, news cycles, social media, entertainment, negative company, and how quickly the spirit gets drained and faith gets weakened. What habits or inputs in your current daily life are building your faith, and which ones are quietly draining it? What would a more intentional approach look like for you?

5. The Word That Abides Referencing 1 John 2:14, Pastor Mirek pointed to the reason young men in the faith are described as strong: the Word of God abides in them. He connected inner strength directly to the Word dwelling on the inside, not just being read on the outside. How consistent is your personal engagement with Scripture right now, and how do you notice a difference in your spiritual strength when that engagement is high versus when it slips?

6. Getting Eyes Off Self Pastor Mirek shared from his own experience of discouragement, including navigating a failed business and a cancer diagnosis, and described how getting involved in serving others, specifically going door to door in a struggling neighborhood, began to lift his faith and change his perspective entirely. He said there is no place in the Word for a believer to remain in a defeated, inward-focused state. In what ways can turning your attention outward toward others act as a genuine weapon against personal discouragement and unbelief?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, identify one specific area of life where defeat, discouragement, or fear has been allowed to speak louder than the Word of God. Write down one Scripture that speaks directly to that situation, place it somewhere you will see it every morning, and speak it aloud over yourself each day before the week is done. At the next group meeting, be ready to share what happened, even if the change was simply internal.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each member of the group would receive a genuine revelation of their identity as an overcomer in Christ, not as a slogan but as a settled conviction that shapes how they respond to difficulty.

  • Pray for anyone in the group who is currently in a season of prolonged pressure: financial, relational, physical, or emotional, that the courage of Christ would rise up in them and that the Word of God would become their loudest voice.

  • Pray for the group collectively to grow in the discipline of feeding faith through Scripture, worship, and Spirit-filled community, and to recognize and turn away from inputs that consistently drain spiritual strength.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Romans 8:37 (NKJV)

"Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us."

Bring your Bible, bring your honesty, and come ready to encourage one another toward the overcoming life God has called every one of us to live.

Born to Overcome

1 John 5:4-5 — "For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?"

When I shared this on Friday, I wanted every person in that room to leave standing taller than when they walked in. That is still my desire for you today. You are not an accident. You are not a victim of your circumstances. You are born of God, and that changes everything. God does not know how to spell defeat. His DNA is victory, and that same DNA is running through you right now. The enemy will throw everything at you, loneliness, sickness, financial pressure, broken relationships, but none of it has the final word over your life. Jesus does. You were created to conquer, to subdue, to win. The moment you settled that in your heart and stopped entertaining the idea that defeat was somehow your portion, everything began to shift. Believe it today. You are an overcomer.

Father, remind me today that I carry Your DNA and that overcoming is my inheritance, not just a possibility. Help me to settle it in my heart that through Jesus I am built to win. Thank You that the victory is already bought and paid for in Jesus name.

Write the words "I am born of God — I am an overcomer" on a piece of paper and place it somewhere you will see it every hour today.

Courage in the Middle of the Storm

John 16:33 — "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."

Jesus never promised us a picnic. He was honest, tribulation is real, pressure is real, and the storms of life are real. But He never stopped at the bad news. He said be of good cheer, and when I looked at that word in the Greek, it means be of good courage. That is not telling you to pretend everything is fine. It is telling you to rise up because the One who overcame is living inside of you. When I had cancer, I was tempted to wallow. I was tempted to feel sorry for myself, to say I left everything for God and look what happened. But I had to snap out of it. I made up my mind I was not going down. That same choice is in front of you today. Whatever pressure is pressing on you right now, courage is available. Jesus already won.

Lord, I am honest with You, some days the pressure feels overwhelming and courage feels far away. But I choose today to be of good cheer because You have already overcome. Fill me with that supernatural courage that only comes from knowing You.

Identify one situation in your life that has been draining your courage, and speak out loud over it: "Jesus has overcome this, and I will not be moved."

The War Is Real — So Is the Victor

Ephesians 6:12 — "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places."

I want to be straight with you, we are in a war zone. I know that is not always comfortable to hear, but a soldier who does not know there is a battle happening is a soldier who will get ambushed every time. The devil is not a concept or a metaphor. He is real, and he hates your family, your destiny, and everything God has planted in you. But here is the other side of that truth; you are not fighting alone and you are not fighting to win. Jesus already won this battle. Through His death He destroyed the power of the one who had power over death. That is Hebrews 2:14 and it is settled. So today you do not wrestle in panic, you wrestle from a position of victory. You enforce what Jesus already secured. Put on the whole armor, open the Word, and stand.

Father, open my eyes to see the battle clearly so I am never caught off guard, but also remind me that I am fighting from victory and not toward it. Thank You that Jesus stripped the enemy of his power so I could walk in freedom today.

Spend five minutes this morning reading Ephesians 6:10-18 slowly and deliberately, treating it as your daily armor check before you walk out the door.

Changing Lords

Hebrews 2:14 — "Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil."

Before you knew Jesus, you were under a different lordship whether you realized it or not. The enemy was calling the shots, over your mind, your emotions, your direction. But the moment you confessed Jesus as Lord and believed in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you changed Lords. That is not religious language. That is the most radical transaction that can happen in a human life. Jesus came in the flesh specifically to destroy the power of the one who had been running things. He did not do that for Himself, He already had all authority. He did it for you. Now the question is whether you are living like it. Are you still letting the old lord push you around through fear, depression, or anxiety? Or are you walking under the Lordship of Jesus and pulling on His strength and victory every single day? Live like your Lord has already won.

Jesus, You are my Lord, not just a title I say but a reality I choose to live under today. I thank You that You destroyed the power of the enemy so that I can walk free. Help me today to act like I belong to the One who conquered.

At some point today, speak out loud: "Jesus is my Lord", not as a religious habit but as a deliberate declaration that you are choosing His authority over every area of your life.

The Word Makes You Strong

1 John 2:14 — "I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one."

You know what I love about this verse? The strength comes from the Word abiding in you, not from your personality, not from your background, not from how long you have been in church. It is the Word living on the inside that makes you an overcomer. When I was going through one of the hardest seasons of my life, what turned it around was not a feeling. It was getting back to what God actually said and doing what He told me to do. I got off my emotions, got into the Word, and started making moves of faith. I knocked on doors. I served. I prayed. And every step of faith strengthened me from the inside out. Friend, this is a lifestyle. Overcoming faith is not a one-time prayer, it is the Word of God abiding in you so deeply that when the enemy shows up, you already know who wins. Stay in the Word. Stay strong.

Father, let Your Word go so deep into me that it becomes the loudest voice in my life, louder than fear, louder than doubt, louder than every lie the enemy whispers. I want to be strong because You live in me through Your Word.

Choose one scripture from this week's devotionals, write it on a card, carry it with you today, and read it every time you feel pressure rising, letting the Word speak louder than the circumstance.
