Decisions...Decisions...Decisions

Pastor Willie Russell · 2020-09-27

Every decision we make shapes the direction of our lives, but the most important decision we'll ever face is whether to receive the love of God as our Father. In this powerful message, Pastor Willie Russell unpacks how God's plan was never abortion but always adoption, and how that changes everything about how we see ourselves, our inheritance, and our family in Christ.

"Decisions...Decisions...Decisions"

Pastor Willie Russell

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Willie Russell opened by reminding the congregation that every area of life is shaped by the decisions we make, and that the most important decision any person will ever make is to receive God's love and accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. He traced God's original design for family from creation through scripture, showing that adoption into God's family was never an afterthought but rather God's plan from before the foundation of the world. He challenged the church to understand that God's will is God's word, and that every blessing, promise, and inheritance available to believers is written in that will and waiting to be received.

2. KEY SCRIPTURES

Psalms 84:11 "For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless."

Jeremiah 1:5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

Psalms 139:14 "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."

3. ICE BREAKER

What is one decision you made this past week that seemed small at the time but turned out to matter more than you expected?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Pastor Willie shared that before he accepted Christ, he was searching for love in places that could never truly satisfy that longing. He described how the enemy offers counterfeits, things like temporary pleasure or distraction, to fill a void that only God can fill. Where have you personally seen people, or even yourself at an earlier point in life, looking for love or belonging in places that ultimately came up empty?

2. Pastor Willie pointed to Ephesians 1:4-5 and made the bold claim that adoption was always God's plan, not a backup strategy but the original design. What does it do to your understanding of God's character to know that he chose you and planned to adopt you before the world was even created?

3. Pastor Willie used the image of a will being read aloud after someone passes, and he said that healing, joy, and prosperity are all written in God's will, which is his word. He said you have to know what the will says in order to claim what belongs to you. How consistently does your group feel it is actually reading and studying that will? What gets in the way of spending regular time in scripture?

4. Pastor Willie drew a sharp contrast between spiritual abortion, which he described as the enemy's attempt to destroy God's purpose for a person's life, and spiritual adoption, which is God's plan to bring every person into his family. Can anyone share a moment when it felt like the enemy was trying to abort something God had placed in them, and how they found their way through it?

5. Pastor Willie referenced John 14:18, where Jesus promises he will never leave his followers as orphans or lonely, and he connected that to Psalm 68:6, which says God places the lonely into families. He made the point that coming to church is not simply a weekly habit but an act of belonging to a spiritual family. How does your group practically help one another avoid that spirit of loneliness that Pastor Willie described, even among people who appear to have full lives?

6. Pastor Willie closed by saying that God is not worried about the enemy aborting the plan, because God's only concern is whether each person will make the decision to follow him and receive his love. What is one area of your life right now where you sense God is asking you to make a clearer decision to trust him fully?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, each group member is encouraged to find one specific promise from scripture, whether related to healing, identity, provision, peace, or purpose, and write it on a notecard or sticky note placed somewhere visible, such as a bathroom mirror, a car dashboard, or a kitchen counter. The goal is to read that promise aloud at least once each day for the next seven days as a reminder that the inheritance is real, it is personal, and it is already written in the will. Group members should come back next week ready to share which promise they chose and what shifted in their thinking by reading it daily.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that every person in the group who has ever struggled to believe that God's love for them is truly unconditional would have a fresh and deep revelation of that love this week, especially those who have found it difficult to separate their earthly father's limitations from who God is as Father.

  • Pray for any group member who is currently facing a significant crossroads or difficult decision, that God would grant them clarity through his word, surround them with wise counsel, and give them the courage to trust his plan rather than lean only on their own understanding.

  • Pray for the church as a spiritual family, that the congregation would grow in genuine connection with one another, that those who are lonely or feeling like outsiders would find real belonging, and that the group itself would be a place where people feel known, loved, and welcomed into the family of God.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Ephesians 1:5 "In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will."

Known Before You Were Born

Jeremiah 1:5 — "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

On Sunday, I shared something that still moves me every time I think about it — God knew you before you took your first breath. Before your parents held you, before anyone gave you a name, God already had your name written on his heart. That is not a small thing. That is everything. I grew up in a home where things fell apart around me. My family split. My world shifted. And for a long time I was searching for something solid to hold onto. What I have come to know is this — God was never surprised by any of it. He saw it all, and he loved me through all of it anyway. He saw you too. He saw your hardest moments before they ever arrived, and he chose you anyway. That kind of love is not something you earn. It is something you receive.

Father, thank you for knowing me before I even knew myself. Help me to rest in the truth that your love for me did not begin with my decisions but with yours. I receive that love today.

Write down one moment in your life when things felt uncertain, and then write beside it the words "God already knew and he chose me."

Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

Psalm 139:14 — "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."

I want to be honest with you about something. For a long time I did not really believe this verse was about me. I knew it was in the Bible. I could quote it. But believing it about yourself is a whole different thing. Growing up without stability, watching my family unravel, moving from house to house — none of that makes you feel fearfully and wonderfully made. It makes you feel like a problem that nobody quite knows how to solve. But God says something completely different. He says that when he made you, he was not having an off day. He was not distracted. You were not an accident or an afterthought. You were crafted with intention and love. The enemy has always been trying to abort the plan God has for your life, but he cannot undo what God purposely made. You are on purpose, for a purpose, and God calls that wonderful.

God, I confess that I do not always believe this about myself. Help me to see myself the way you see me — not through my mistakes or my past, but through your hands that made me. I praise you today for the person you created me to be.

Say Psalm 139:14 out loud to yourself in the mirror this morning, slowly, and let it land.

Adopted Into the Family

Ephesians 1:4-5 — "For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will."

On Sunday I told you that while the devil was thinking about abortion, God was thinking about adoption. I want you to sit with that for a moment. Before you ever made a mess, before you ever wandered, before you did any of the things you are not proud of, God had already planned to bring you home. That word adoption in the Greek is a legal term. It means you have every right and every privilege of a natural-born heir. God did not take you in and put you in a back room. He brought you to the table. He put your name on the inheritance. He said everything that is mine is now yours. That is what the cross accomplished. Jesus made adoption possible so that you would never have to feel like an outsider in God's family again. You are not tolerated here. You are chosen, wanted, and loved.

Father, thank you for choosing me before I ever chose you. I do not take lightly what it means to be adopted into your family. Help me to walk today like someone who knows exactly who their Father is.

Reach out to one person in your church family today — a text, a call, or a note — just to remind them that they belong.

The Inheritance Is in the Will

Acts 20:32 — "Now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified."

On Sunday I made a point that I want to come back to today because I think it is one of the most practical things I said all morning. Your inheritance is revealed through the Word of God. I talked about how my daughter knows some of what she would inherit if something happened to us, but there are things she would not even know about until someone sat down and read the will to her. That is exactly how it works with God. Healing is in the will. Peace is in the will. Provision, joy, restoration — all of it is written in the will. But you have to open it. You have to read it. You have to sit with it long enough to understand what belongs to you. That is why I love the Word of God so deeply. Every time I open it, I find something else that God has already set aside for me. For you. It is all yours.

Lord, give me a hunger for your Word like never before. I do not want to miss a single thing you have already prepared for me. Open my eyes to the inheritance written on every page.

Set aside fifteen minutes today to read one chapter of the Bible, and as you read, ask God to show you one promise that belongs to you personally.

God Places the Lonely in Families

Psalm 68:6 — "God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land."

I want to close out this week with something that I believe with everything in me. God is not okay with you being alone. Loneliness is not his plan for you, and it never was. On Sunday I shared that the word orphan in John 14 comes from a word that means lonely. And Jesus looked at his disciples — people who were about to feel completely abandoned — and he said, I promise I will never leave you as orphans, as lonely. I have sat with enough people in their hardest seasons to know that loneliness can find you even in a crowded room. Even in a marriage. Even in a church. But God's answer to loneliness has always been family. Natural family matters. But your spiritual family — the people God has placed around you — that is something supernatural. Do not take it for granted. Show up for your family. Let them show up for you. You were never meant to do this alone.

Father, thank you for the family you have placed around me. Forgive me for the times I have pulled away when I should have leaned in. Help me to be present, open, and grateful for every person you have set in my life.

Make plans this week to gather with at least one person from your church family in person, not just online, and be intentional about showing up.
