Learning To Reap In Stewardship

Pastor Willie Russell · 2021-04-28

We spend a lot of time in church talking about sowing, but what about the harvest? In this message, Pastor Willie Russell unpacks what it actually looks like to reap what you've sown, and why so many believers are leaving their harvest out in the field to die.

Learning To Reap In Stewardship

Small Group Discussion Guide

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Willie Russell challenged the congregation to shift their focus from only thinking about sowing seeds to actively expecting and pursuing the harvest God has promised. He outlined three key principles: planting according to the harvest you want to reap, expecting multiple harvests, and never sleeping on the Word of God. He reminded us that reaping requires intentional effort, clear expectation, and a vision of the end in mind.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 (NKJV)

"To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted."

3. ICE BREAKER

Think about a garden, a farm, or even a houseplant you have seen or tended. What is the most satisfying part of the growing process, and why?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Seeing the harvest before you sow Pastor Willie pointed out that a farmer always sows with the harvest in mind. He asked the congregation directly, "If I asked you what your harvest looks like, could you tell me?" How clearly can your group members describe the specific harvest they are believing God for right now, whether in their finances, relationships, health, or calling?

2. Beginning with the end in mind Pastor Willie shared how he and his wife decided to become debt-free and then worked backward to figure out what seeds they needed to sow, including tithing, living on a spending plan, and helping others with their finances. What does it look like practically to reverse-engineer a spiritual or financial goal in that same way? What steps might your group members be skipping?

3. The widow's two expectations In 1 Kings 17, Pastor Willie observed that Elijah and the widow of Zarephath both had expectations, but they were completely different. Elijah expected provision; the widow expected death. He noted that sometimes we need to allow the Word of God, or a trusted voice, to show us something in our hands that we cannot see ourselves. Has there been a time when someone else saw potential or provision in your life before you did? What happened?

4. Sleeping on the Word Pastor Willie used the parable of the wheat and the tares in Matthew 13 to make a sobering point: it was not the sower who fell asleep, it was the people who heard the word. The enemy planted doubt, unbelief, and fear while they were not paying attention. In what practical ways do people in your group find themselves sleeping on a word they have already received? What helps them stay awake and attentive to what God has spoken?

5. The work of reaping He made a clear distinction between sowing and reaping, saying that sowing takes obedience, but reaping takes effort, obedience, and time. Why do you think so many believers are comfortable with the idea of sowing a seed but resist the sustained effort that comes with actually going out to reap the harvest?

6. Identifying your season Pastor Willie drew from Ecclesiastes 3 and reminded the group that knowing what season you are in changes what you should be doing. He shared that he personally chose to sow his time into the usher ministry because he sensed it was his season to do so, even when others misread it. How do you personally discern what spiritual season you are in, and how does that shape the seeds you are currently sowing?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

Before the group meets again, each member should take one specific harvest they are believing God for and write it down in one clear, concrete sentence. Underneath that sentence, they should list two or three seeds they can intentionally sow this week that directly correspond to that harvest. This could include a financial gift, volunteering time in a ministry area, studying a related scripture, or taking a practical step like making a budget or researching a goal. Members should bring what they wrote to the next gathering and briefly share what they discovered about the connection between their seed and their harvest.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each group member would receive a clear and God-given vision for the specific harvest He has placed in their heart, and that fear or vague thinking would not keep them from pursuing it.

  • Pray that the group would remain alert and attentive to the Word of God, refusing to sleep on what has already been spoken over their lives, and that doubt, unbelief, and confusion would be bound and removed.

  • Pray for the courage and sustained effort required to go out and actively reap, trusting that because the seed sown has been good seed, the harvest is already growing and waiting to be gathered.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Psalm 92:13-14 (NKJV)

"Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing."

Begin With the Harvest in Mind

Genesis 1:11 — "Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit after their kind with seed in them."

On Wednesday, I challenged you to stop fixating on the seed and start seeing the harvest. A farmer never walks into a field thinking only about what he is planting. He already sees the corn standing tall. He already sees the crop coming in. That vision is what drives the work. God designed every seed to reproduce after its own kind, which means the harvest is already built into the seed. The question is whether you can see it before it arrives. So many of us are sowing, our time, our money, our service, without any clear picture of what we are believing God for. That aimlessness costs us. I want you to get specific with God today. What does your harvest look like? Name it. Write it down. Begin walking toward it. God can work with a person who knows where they are going.

Lord, give me eyes to see my harvest the way you already see it. Help me stop wandering and start believing you for something specific and real. I trust you to guide my steps toward it.

Write down one specific harvest you are believing God for right now, and keep it somewhere you will see it every day this week.

Your Life Is the Seed

Psalm 92:13-14 — "Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and green."

On Wednesday, I said something I really need you to sit with today. Your life is the biggest seed you have before God. Not your money. Your life. Money is simply a part of your life, which means everything you do, how you show up, how you serve, how you give your time and energy, is seed going into the ground. When you plant yourself in the house of God consistently, when you keep showing up even when you are tired or distracted, God says you are going to flourish. You are going to bear fruit. And the beautiful thing about this promise is that it does not have an expiration date. You will still be producing in your old age. That is not a natural promise. That is a supernatural one. Do not underestimate the seed of your presence and your faithfulness. It is doing more than you think.

God, I want to be planted deeply in you and in your house. Help me take my whole life seriously as a seed, not just what I put in an offering. Grow something lasting out of my faithfulness.

Identify one area of your life, your time, your attitude, your habits, where you can sow more intentionally this week, and take one concrete step in that direction today.

Expect a Multiple Harvest

Zechariah 8:12 — "For the seed shall be prosperous, the vine shall give its fruit, the ground shall give her increase, and the heavens shall give their dew."

I love this verse because it stacks the blessing. The seed is prosperous. The vine gives fruit. The ground increases. Heaven sends dew. That is not one harvest. That is a multiplied, layered, coming-from-every-direction kind of harvest. On Wednesday, I told you about the early days of our ministry when I thought raising twenty thousand dollars in a year would be a miracle. I was shooting way too low. God is a big God and he multiplies the harvest. But here is the thing, you have to expect it. You cannot walk around bracing for nothing and then be surprised when nothing shows up. The dew from heaven is already falling. The question is whether you are positioned to receive it. Get your expectation up. Stop settling for the smallest version of what God promised. He is the God of thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold, not zero.

Lord, stretch my expectation today. I confess I have been believing too small, and I ask you to expand my vision to match your generosity. I receive the multiplied harvest you have already prepared for me.

Spend five minutes in prayer today specifically thanking God in advance for the harvest you wrote down on Monday, speaking it out as though it is already on its way.
Thursday

Do Not Sleep on the Word

Matthew 13:25 — "But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way."

This verse is one of the most convicting in the whole Bible when you really sit with it. The pastor sowed good seed. The word was preached. The problem was not the seed, it was that the people were sleeping. And while they slept, the enemy showed up and planted doubt, fear, unbelief, and confusion right alongside the good word they had received. On Wednesday, I asked you to think about your spiritual garden. There may be a harvest out there that is dying in the field simply because you fell asleep on the word that produced it. You heard a sermon, maybe even cried about it, and then went home and forgot it by Tuesday. Staying awake to the word means letting it take root. It means coming back to it. It means not letting a week go by where the enemy gets to plant something in the silence you left behind.

God, forgive me for the times I let your word slip away before it could do its work in me. Keep me awake and attentive to every word you speak, and let nothing the enemy plants take root in my life.

Go back and reread or listen to one recent sermon or scripture that moved you, and write down one thing from it you have not yet acted on.

Reaping Takes Effort

Genesis 27:28 — "May God give you of the dew of heaven, of the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and new wine."

Isaac's blessing over Jacob was threefold: the dew of heaven, the riches of the earth, and abundance of grain and wine. That is a picture of a full harvest coming at you from every direction. But here is what I want you to remember as you finish this week: the harvest does not jump off the vine into your hands. On Wednesday, I told you that reaping is not easy. Sowing just takes obedience. Reaping takes real effort. It takes time. It takes showing up. It takes going out and looking at the houses, filling out the applications, opening the books, making the phone calls. God is not withholding your harvest. He is waiting to see if you are serious enough to go get it. The blessing of heaven is real. The dew is falling. But you have to be in the field to feel it. Get up. Get out there. Go reap what God has already prepared for you.

Father, thank you for the threefold blessing you have prepared for my life. Give me the courage and the discipline to go after what you have already released, and do not let laziness or fear keep me from my harvest.

Take one tangible step today toward the harvest you identified on Monday, make a call, send an email, set up an appointment, or do the research you have been putting off.
