Covered In Righteousness

Pastor Willie Russell · 2022-09-25

In this powerful message, Pastor Willie Russell walks through the fall of Adam and Eve to reveal how sin distorts the way we see ourselves, and how God's desire has always been to clothe us in righteousness, not leave us hiding behind fig leaves. If you've been running from God instead of running to Him, this sermon is for you.

COVERED IN RIGHTEOUSNESS

Small Group Discussion Guide

Based on the sermon by Pastor Willie Russell

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Willie Russell opened with an honest reflection on how he sought the Lord for this message, then walked the group through the story of Adam and Eve in Genesis 3 to show how sin begins with simply entertaining what the enemy says. He unpacked how the fig leaves Adam and Eve sewed together to cover their shame represent the ways people today still try to hide their sin from God rather than running to Him. Pastor Russell challenged the group to strip away those self-made coverings and receive the robe of righteousness that God alone provides.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 61:10 "I will rejoice greatly in the Lord. My soul shall exalt my God, for He has clothed me with garments of salvation, has covered me with a robe of righteousness."

3. ICE BREAKER

What is something you tried to fix or cover up on your own as a kid, only to have a parent or adult find out anyway?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Question 1 Pastor Willie noted that God gave Adam and Eve only one command, and yet they still struggled to keep it. Why do you think even simple, clear boundaries from God can be so difficult to hold onto in everyday life?

Question 2 Pastor Willie described how Eve's sin began not with eating the fruit but with entertaining the serpent's question. Where in your own life do you notice that the first moment of temptation is actually the conversation you allow yourself to have with it, rather than the act itself?

Question 3 He pointed out that when Adam and Eve sinned, no one had to tell them they had done wrong. Their eyes were opened and they immediately saw themselves differently. How does guilt and shame change the way a person sees themselves, and how can that distorted self-image drive someone further away from God rather than toward Him?

Question 4 Pastor Willie challenged the group to think about how sin gradually becomes normalized, using the image of society slowly conditioning people to accept what was once unacceptable. Where do you see that kind of gradual conditioning happening in your own daily environment, and how do you guard against it?

Question 5 He used the image of a white suit with a large yellow stain to describe how sin is visible to everyone around us, even when we think we are hiding it well. How does living with unconfessed sin affect the people closest to us, even when we believe no one knows?

Question 6 Pastor Willie made the point that God made garments of skin for Adam and Eve, but they had to remove the fig leaves first before they could receive what God offered. What does it look like practically to remove a self-made covering and receive what God has already provided in terms of forgiveness and righteousness?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, identify one specific area of life where a personal line of holiness has quietly moved over time, whether in what is watched, listened to, tolerated in conversation, or engaged with online. Write it down privately, bring it honestly before God in prayer each morning, and take one concrete step to move that line back, such as removing an app, ending a habit for seven days, or sharing the struggle with a trusted accountability partner before the next group meeting.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each group member would have the courage to see themselves honestly before God this week, without the covering of self-made excuses, and would run toward His presence rather than hiding from it.

  • Pray for protection against the gradual conditioning of sin, asking God to sharpen each person's sensitivity to what His Word calls holy and to give them the strength to hold that standard in their daily environment.

  • Pray that the group as a whole would grow in the kind of transparency with one another that Pastor Russell described, where people feel safe enough to admit struggle and trust that the community will help carry them toward freedom rather than toward judgment.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Ephesians 5:27 "To present to himself a glorious church without stain or wrinkle or blemish, but holy and blameless."

Consider reading this verse aloud together at the close of each group meeting this week as a reminder of the standard God has set and the identity He has already provided.

The One Command We Keep Forgetting

Genesis 2:16-17 — "And the Lord God commanded the man, 'You may freely eat from every tree in the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. For in the day you eat of it, you will surely die.'"

On Sunday, I talked about how God gave Adam and Eve only one command. Just one. And yet that one command became the place where everything unraveled. I think about how generous God was — every tree, every fruit, an entire garden of provision — and still one boundary became a battleground. That is exactly how the enemy works in my life. He never draws my attention to all that God has given me. He zeroes in on the one thing I should not have, and he makes it look better than everything else I already hold. Holiness begins with recognizing the goodness of God before I even address the boundary. When I see how much he has given me, saying no to the one thing becomes less of a sacrifice and more of a natural response to gratitude.

Father, thank you for your generosity toward me. Help me to fix my eyes on all you have provided rather than on the one thing the enemy is using to distract me. I choose obedience today.

Write down three specific blessings God has given you and keep that list somewhere visible throughout the day.

Stop Talking to the Serpent

Genesis 3:1 — "Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, 'Did God really say you must not eat any tree in the garden?'"

On Sunday, I made it clear that the devil is not stupid. He is crafty, cunning, and patient. He has been watching you long enough to know exactly which question to ask and exactly when to ask it. Eve's first mistake was not taking the fruit. Her first mistake was entertaining the question. The moment she began to consider what the serpent said, the door cracked open. I have done the same thing. I have sat with a tempting thought and told myself I was just thinking, not acting. But consideration is the beginning of compromise. Every time I entertain what the enemy suggests rather than immediately standing on what God said, I am already moving in the wrong direction. Holiness is not just about what I do. It is about what I allow myself to sit with and think about. The enemy's conversation is not worth having.

Lord, give me the discernment to recognize the enemy's voice quickly and the courage to shut the conversation down before it takes root. Remind me today that I do not have to engage every thought that comes my way.

The next time a tempting or compromising thought enters your mind, speak one scripture out loud in response rather than reasoning with the thought.

Fig Leaves Cannot Cover What God Already Sees

Genesis 3:7 — "And the eyes of both of them were open and they knew they were naked. So they sewed some fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves."

On Sunday, I asked the congregation a question that I want to ask you again today. How many of us are covering ourselves with fig leaves right now? We come to church, we sing the songs, we raise our hands, and all the while we have something stitched together on the inside that we are hoping no one notices. But God notices. Adam and Eve tried to cover themselves before God even showed up, and when he did, he saw right through the fig leaves anyway. The covering we construct out of our own effort — our excuses, our routines, our religious activity — cannot hide what is really going on in our spirit. And here is the thing that broke my heart when I preached this: God never asked them to undress. He asked them where they were. He already knew. He just wanted them to stop hiding and come to him honestly.

Father, I confess that I have been hiding behind things that look like faith but are really just cover. Today I choose to come to you without pretending. See me as I am, and meet me there.

Spend five quiet minutes today with no phone, no music, and no distraction — just honestly telling God one thing you have been covering up.

God Removed the Filthy Clothes

Zechariah 3:4 — "And he spoke and said to those who were standing before him saying, 'Remove the filthy garments from him.' Again he said to him, 'See, I have taken your iniquity from you and will clothe you with festive clothes.'"

On Sunday, I walked through this passage in Zechariah and I want to sit with it again because it wrecked me. Joshua the high priest was standing before God in filthy garments with Satan right there accusing him. And God did not argue with Satan about Joshua's sin. He did not defend Joshua's record. He just said, take those filthy clothes off him. That is the grace of God. He is not interested in debating the accusations the enemy makes against me. He is interested in clothing me in something that reflects who I truly am to him. But I had to let the filthy garments come off first. I could not hold on to the old covering and receive the new one at the same time. Receiving righteousness requires releasing what I have been wearing in its place. Today, I do not have to stay dressed in shame.

Lord, I receive what you have already done. I let go of the guilt and the shame and the old garments I have been wearing in their place. Clothe me today in what only you can give.

Identify one habit, thought pattern, or behavior that represents a filthy garment in your life, and make one concrete decision today to begin removing it.

Clothed and Ready

Isaiah 61:10 — "I will rejoice greatly in the Lord. My soul shall exalt my God for he has clothed me with garments of salvation, has covered me with a robe of righteousness."

I want to end this week right where I want us to land as a people. God has clothed me. Not with something I earned or stitched together in a panic, but with garments of salvation and a robe of righteousness that he placed on me himself. On Sunday, I talked about how God killed an animal in the garden and made skins for Adam and Eve. Blood was shed to cover their shame. That was a picture of what Jesus would one day do completely and finally. The cross is where my fig leaf was removed and my robe was given. The question I am sitting with today is not whether God has provided the covering. He has. The question is whether I am walking in it. Whether I see myself the way he sees me. Ephesians 5:27 says he is coming back for a church without spot or wrinkle. That church is not a building. It is me. It is you. Let us live like we believe that.

Father, I receive my identity today. I am not defined by what I have done or where I have been. I am covered by your righteousness and I choose to walk in that truth. Help me to see myself the way you see me.

Read Isaiah 61:10 out loud three times today, replacing "me" and "my" with your own name, and let it settle in as a statement of who you are before God.
