Developing A Heart After God

Developing A Heart After God

Pastor Mirek Hufton · 2026-09-13

What does it really mean to seek God first? In this opening message of a new series, Pastor Mirek Hufton cuts through the noise of a culture that is slowly conditioning the church to lower its standards and drift from the heart of God. Drawing from Matthew 6:33, Joshua 24, and other key scriptures, this message is a passionate call to examine your heart, pursue righteousness, and make pleasing God the driving force of your life.

Developing A Heart After God

Small Group Discussion Guide

Based on the teaching by Pastor Mirek Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Mirek opened with Matthew 6:33 and challenged the congregation to examine whether seeking God's kingdom is truly the first priority of their lives, or whether the pursuit of provision and blessing has quietly taken center stage. He warned that the culture of the world is slowly conditioning the church to lower its standards and drift from genuine love for God, which always expresses itself in obedience and a desire to please Him. He called every believer to regularly examine their own heart, repent of what needs to be repented of, and cultivate a passionate, growing hunger for God that never settles for cruise control.

2. KEY SCRIPTURES

Hebrews 4:15 "For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin."

Romans 6:13 "And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God."

Romans 6:14 "For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace."

3. ICE BREAKER

Think of someone in your life, past or present, whom you have genuinely wanted to please, perhaps a parent, a mentor, or a close friend. What did you actually change about your behavior or habits because of how much you valued that relationship?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Question 1 Pastor Mirek described a slow cultural conditioning where things that once would have troubled a believer gradually become acceptable and unremarkable. Without naming specific issues, can the group identify ways that kind of drift tends to happen in a person's spiritual life? What does it usually feel like from the inside when it is happening?

Question 2 He drew a distinction between "right being" and "right doing" within the concept of righteousness, and he cautioned that the church can sometimes push grace so heavily that right living gets left out of the conversation entirely. How does the group think a healthy church holds both of those truths together without swinging too far toward either legalism or permissiveness?

Question 3 Pastor Mirek referenced Joshua 24:15, where Joshua made a bold, personal declaration that regardless of what the surrounding culture chose, his household would serve the Lord. What does it look like practically in today's world to make and keep that kind of declaration? What makes it difficult to hold that line?

Question 4 He spoke honestly about checking his own motives, examining how much time he spent on his phone, and deliberately carrying chairs and tables as a way of guarding against pride in leadership. What practices, habits, or honest questions does the group use to examine their own hearts on a regular basis? Is self-examination something that comes naturally, or does it feel uncomfortable?

Question 5 Romans 6:14 declares that sin shall not have dominion over the believer. Pastor Mirek challenged the group to use faith not just to acquire things but to actively resist and overcome sin. What does it look like, in real and practical terms, to apply faith in that direction rather than only toward provision and blessing?

Question 6 He described never wanting to be satisfied with the current level of spiritual growth, using Paul's declaration in Philippians 3 as a model, that the one thing Paul pursued was knowing Christ more deeply. Where does the group feel genuinely hungry for more of God right now? Where might complacency have quietly settled in?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

Before the group meets again, each person should set aside fifteen uninterrupted minutes to pray through Psalm 139:23-24, asking God specifically to reveal one area of their life where cultural conditioning may have shifted what they once recognized as displeasing to Him. They should write down whatever comes to mind, bring it honestly before God in repentance or recommitment, and be prepared to share, at whatever level of comfort they choose, what that time with God stirred in them.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each member of the group would develop a genuine, growing hunger for God that goes beyond acquiring blessings, a hunger that says, above all else, I want to know Him and please Him.

  • Pray for protection against the slow drift of cultural conditioning, that the Holy Spirit would keep each person sensitive to the things that grieve God, and that godly sorrow would lead to genuine and lasting change wherever it is needed.

  • Pray for the church as a whole to be a community that holds grace and righteous living together faithfully, a place where people are loved without compromise and told the truth without harshness.

Put God First and Watch Everything Shift

Matthew 6:33 — "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you."

On Sunday I kept coming back to this verse because it is the heartbeat of everything I wanted to say. It is so easy to let our faith become a shopping list — believing for provision, for healing, for open doors — and there is nothing wrong with any of that. But when seeking the things replaces seeking the King, something in us slowly goes cold. I have had to check myself on this more times than I can count. God does not want to be your last resort or your lucky charm. He wants to be your first love, your first thought, your first yes. The Hawaiian pidgin translation I shared on Sunday said it so simply: main thing, make God your boss. That is it. That is the whole thing. When he is truly first, everything else finds its right place.

Father, forgive me for the days I sought the blessing more than I sought you. Reset my priorities today, and make you the first thing on my heart from the moment I wake up. I love you, Lord.

Before you check your phone this morning, spend two minutes simply telling God he is first — out loud if you can.

Love Him With Everything You Have

Matthew 22:37 — "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind."

I want you to sit with those two words from Sunday — first and greatest. Jesus did not call this a nice suggestion or a helpful spiritual habit. He called it the first and greatest commandment. That tells me everything. If I get this one right, it shapes every other area of my life. Loving God with everything — heart, soul, mind, strength — means I cannot hold a corner of my life back from him. And here is the honest truth I shared on Sunday: you cannot love God like that without focusing on him. Love requires attention. Love requires accommodation. When I love my wife, I cannot just do whatever I want all the time. I make room for her. It is the same with God. A heart that truly loves him asks every single day, what does he want from me today?

God, I want to love you fully, not just in the moments when it is convenient or comfortable. Show me the areas where I have been holding back, and help me give those to you today. You deserve all of me.

At some point today, pause and honestly ask yourself: what part of my life am I not fully surrendering to God? Write it down and bring it to him in prayer tonight.

Obedience Is Love With Its Boots On

John 14:21 — "He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me."

On Sunday I talked about the word keep in this verse. It does not mean you vaguely know what God says. It means you guard it, you hold it close, and you actually do it. Jesus is saying that the proof of love is not a feeling — it is obedience. I think about what it took for me to leave a good-paying job in corporate America when God said go. I did not raise my hands and shout yes, Lord the moment he asked. I wrestled with it. But what ultimately moved me was this: I want to please him. That desire to please God is what obedience grows out of. It is not about rules or religion. It is about love made practical. When you truly love someone, you do not just feel it — you show it. Let your love for God show up today in the choices you make.

Jesus, I want my obedience to be an act of love, not just duty. Where I have been dragging my feet on something you have already spoken to me about, give me the courage today to simply say yes. I trust you.

Think of one thing you know God has been asking you to do or stop doing. Take one concrete step toward obedience in that area today.
Thursday

Do Not Give Yourself a Pass

Psalm 139:23-24 — "Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."

On Sunday I talked about how our hearts can drift without us even noticing. The culture slowly conditions us. Something that once convicted us starts to feel normal, and before long we are giving ourselves a pass on things God never gave us permission to excuse. I shared that I have to examine myself regularly — even checking how I spend my time on my phone was convicting enough. This prayer in Psalm 139 is one of the bravest prayers a person can pray, because you are genuinely asking God to show you what you would rather not see. Godly sorrow, Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 7, works real change in you. Not shame — change. When God puts his finger on something in your heart, that is not punishment. That is love. He is making room for more of himself. Do not run from the examination. Invite it.

Lord, I am opening up to you right now — search me, and show me anything in my heart that does not belong. I do not want to keep giving myself a pass on things that grieve you. Lead me back to the right path.

Set aside ten quiet minutes today to sit before God with no agenda. Simply ask him to show you one thing in your heart that needs attention, and listen.

Serve Him Until the Day You Drop

Colossians 3:23-24 — "And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ."

I love what Joshua declared in chapter 24 — as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. That is not a quiet whisper. That is a decision. A declaration. A line drawn in the sand. On Sunday I told you that the Hebrew word for serve means to work, to labor. Loving God is not passive. It produces something. It moves your feet. Whether you are greeting people in the parking lot, praying with someone over the phone, or helping fold chairs after a service, you are serving Jesus. I carry the chairs myself sometimes just to check my own heart. If I think I am too important to serve in the small things, something has gone wrong on the inside. Whatever you do today — at work, at home, in this house — do it as if Jesus himself is watching, because he is. Serve him with a full heart, and do not stop.

Father, let everything I put my hands to today be an act of worship. Keep my heart humble, keep my motives clean, and remind me that I am not serving people — I am serving you. That makes every little thing matter.

Choose one small, unnoticed act of service today — something no one will likely thank you for — and do it wholeheartedly as an offering to God.
