The Power of the Word of God
The Word of God is not just a book, it is living, breathing, life-giving sustenance for your spirit. In this message, Pastor Linda Hufton unpacks why meditating on, speaking, and praying the Word is the single most transformative discipline a believer can cultivate, and why so many Christians are spiritually malnourished without even realizing it.

The Power of the Word of God
A Small Group Discussion Guide
Based on the teaching by Pastor Linda Hufton
1. SERMON RECAP
Pastor Linda Hufton taught on the power of the Word of God, drawing on the truth that God's Word is both life and light to every believer. She explored how the Word functions like food for the spirit, comparing spiritual nourishment to physical nutrition and warning that neglecting the Word produces measurable symptoms of spiritual malnutrition. She challenged the group to move beyond passive Bible reading into active meditation, declaration, and faith-filled application of Scripture in everyday life.
2. KEY SCRIPTURE
John 15:7-8
"If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples."
3. ICE BREAKER
What is your favorite meal, and can you remember a time when you went without food far too long and felt the effects of it? What did that feel like?
4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. Pastor Linda described the Word of God as both life and light, drawing from John 1:1-5. In practical terms, what is the difference between the Word functioning as life in your daily experience versus functioning as light? Have you experienced one more than the other?
2. Pastor Linda drew a detailed comparison between physical malnutrition and spiritual malnutrition, naming symptoms such as coldness, slow recovery from wounds, lack of appetite, and poor concentration. Which of those symptoms resonated with you personally, and what do you think caused that season in your walk with God?
3. She distinguished between milk, bread, and meat in the Word, pointing out that Paul rebuked the Corinthian church for being unable to receive stronger teaching because of carnality and strife in their relationships. What does it look like in real life when carnal attitudes such as envy or division actually block a person from receiving deeper revelation from God?
4. Pastor Linda explained that a Scripture becomes a Rhema word when the Holy Spirit quickens or makes it alive to a believer personally, and that this is different from simply quoting or reciting Scripture. Can anyone share a time when a familiar verse suddenly came alive in a new way during a season of need? What made that moment different?
5. She connected the speed of light to the speed at which God's Word travels, using 1 John 5:14 to argue that believers can receive an answer in their spirit the moment they pray in faith. How does this perspective challenge or encourage the way you currently wait for answers to prayer?
6. Pastor Linda pointed out that the Word of God is only a sword when it is spoken, referencing Ephesians 6 and the description of Scripture as the sword of the Spirit. What practical habits or rhythms could your group develop together to move from silently reading the Word to actively speaking it in faith?
5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE
This week, choose one specific area of need in your life and find one Scripture that speaks directly to it. Write it out by hand, read it aloud at least once every morning, and ask the Holy Spirit for revelation on that verse each day. By the end of the week, note whether anything has shifted in your faith level or perspective regarding that need, and come prepared to share briefly with the group next time.
6. PRAYER POINTS
-
Pray that each group member would develop a genuine, growing hunger for the Word of God, and that any spiritual coldness or dullness of heart would be broken.
-
Pray for the Holy Spirit to quicken specific Scriptures to each person according to their current season of need, making the Word living and active rather than routine.
-
Pray that the group would move from spiritual milk to solid food, growing in character and maturity so that deeper revelation can be received and lived out.
7. MEMORY VERSE
Psalm 119:105
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
Daily Devotional
You Cannot Overdose on the Word
John 15:7 — "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you."
I have been sitting with this verse for weeks now, and every time I return to it, I see something new. That is the miracle of the Word of God — it is alive. It regenerates. It does not go stale. On Wednesday I shared that this one scripture seems to encompass the whole Christian experience — abiding in Christ, letting His Word take up residence in us, and then asking in confidence. But here is what strikes me most: we rush straight to the asking part. We skip the abiding. We skip the Word dwelling deep inside us. God is not withholding answers. He is waiting for us to do our part — to press in, to feed our spirits, to let His Word truly abide. The prerequisite is not complicated. It is simply intimacy with Him and with His Word, chosen daily, on purpose.
Father, I confess I rush to asking before I have done the work of truly abiding. Help me slow down and let Your Word take root deep in my spirit. I want to meet the conditions, not just make the requests.
Your Spirit Is Hungry Whether You Know It or Not
Proverbs 4:22 — "For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh."
On Wednesday I talked about the symptoms of spiritual malnutrition — coldness toward God, slow recovery from wounds, dullness of heart, a fading appetite for the Word. The sobering thing is that these symptoms creep in quietly. Our bodies scream when they need food. Our spirits do not always do that. We can coast along feeling fine while our inner man is actually starving. God designed physical food to carry nutrients to every single cell in the body. The Word of God works the same way in the spirit. When you read it, meditate on it, and speak it, it does not stay on the surface. It goes deep. It feeds places in you that you did not even know were weak. Do not wait until you are running on empty to start feeding your spirit. The Word is life and health — and it is available to you right now.
Lord, reveal to me any area of my spirit that has grown dull or cold without my realizing it. I want Your Word to go deep and bring life to every part of me. Help me hunger for it the way I hunger for food.
Stop Living on Empty Calories
Matthew 4:4 — "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God."
I am going to be honest with you. I talked on Wednesday about empty calories — the harmless entertainment, the scrolling, the distraction therapy that we all reach for. There is nothing wrong with stepping out of your life for a few minutes. I understand that need. But if that is the bulk of what I am consuming spiritually, I am going to feel full without actually being nourished. Jesus did not say man shall not live by bread at all. He said not by bread alone. There is room for rest, for laughter, for light things. But there has to be substance. There has to be meat in there. I want to grow. I want the Lord to say to me, now you can receive what I have been trying to tell you. That only happens when I am intentional about getting solid food from His Word, not just the comfortable, warm, milky scriptures — but the challenging ones that change me.
Father, I do not want to just be entertained into complacency. Give me a genuine hunger for solid food from Your Word. Help me be intentional today and choose nourishment over empty calories.
The Word Is a Lamp for Your Very Next Step
Psalm 119:105 — "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
I love this verse because it is so practical. A lamp to my feet — not a floodlight showing me everything ten years out, but enough light for my very next step. When I am praying with someone and looking for direction, this is what I come back to. The Word does not always show us the whole road. It shows us enough to move. It illuminates. It makes things visible that darkness has been hiding. And here is what I said on Wednesday that I want you to hold onto — the Word is luminous. That means the light comes from within it, not just reflected off the surface. When the Holy Spirit quickens a scripture to you, that light is radiating from the inside out. You did not manufacture it. God lit it. So when you are uncertain about your next step, do not reach for opinions first. Reach for the Word. Let it be your lamp.
Lord, I do not need to see every detail of where I am going. I just need enough light for today. Speak Your Word to me and illuminate my next step. I trust that You will show me the rest in time.
The Word Travels Faster Than You Think
Psalm 147:15 — "He sends out His command to the earth; His word runs very swiftly."
On Wednesday I shared something that has genuinely helped my faith, and I want to give it to you before the weekend. When God sends His Word, it runs swiftly. And since the Word is light, I believe it travels at the speed of light — which means, in ways that science itself cannot fully explain, time as we know it does not apply to it. The moment you pray according to His will, the answer is already in motion. First John 5:14 says if we know He hears us, we know we have what we asked. Not we will have it one day — we have it. I struggled for a long time with believing I receive something the moment I pray. But when I understood that the Word is living light and it runs swiftly, something shifted in me. God is not slow. His Word is not slow. Speak it, believe it, and trust that it is already running toward you.
Father, thank You that Your Word does not crawl — it runs. I choose today to believe that the moment I pray according to Your will, You hear me and the answer is already in motion. Help me hold onto that confidence and not let go.
