Power Over Sin

Breaking Free From the Power of Sin Forever

Pastor Mirek Hufton · 2021-06-23

Every believer has been spiritually equipped to walk above sin, not merely to be forgiven of it, but to overcome it. Drawing from Romans 6 and 8, Pastor Mirek Hufton explains that when we were born again, our "old man", the very source of sin, was crucified with Christ. This means sin no longer has dominion over our spirit. Forgiveness, Pastor Hufton notes, is the safety net when you fall; but God's design is that you learn to stay on the trapeze. The key to victory is a renewed mind set firmly on God's Word, not on fleshly emotions or worldly influences. Pastor Hufton shares the story of renowned pastor Jack Hayford, who recognized a dangerous emotional attachment developing with a coworker and deliberately walked away, a decision he credited with saving his ministry and marriage. Sin stunts spiritual growth. Feed your spirit daily through God's Word, make no provision for the flesh, and watch sin's power diminish, one victory at a time.

Breaking Free From the Power of Sin Forever

Small Group Discussion Guide

Based on the teaching by Pastor Mirek Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Mirek Hufton taught from Romans 6 that every believer's old sinful nature was crucified with Christ, meaning Christians have been given genuine spiritual power to rise above sin — not just receive forgiveness after falling into it. He challenged the group to understand that a born-again spirit is dead to sin and alive to God, and that feeding the spirit through God's Word is the pathway to crushing sinful habits. He reminded the congregation that walking in spiritual maturity requires treating sin seriously, making no provision for the flesh, and keeping the mind fixed on what Scripture says rather than what emotions or circumstances dictate.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Romans 6:11–12 (NKJV) "Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts."

3. ICE BREAKER

What is one habit — good or bad — that you picked up simply because of the people you spent the most time with growing up?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Understanding Our New Identity Pastor Mirek described the born-again spirit as genuinely dead to sin and alive to God — not just struggling to do better, but fundamentally changed. How does thinking of yourself as a new creation rather than simply a reformed sinner change the way you approach temptation day to day? Does that feel true in your experience, or does it feel more like a theological idea that hasn't quite landed yet?

2. Carnal vs. Spiritual Mindset Drawing from 1 Corinthians 3, Pastor Mirek described a "carnal Christian" as someone who is body-ruled and emotion-led, while a spiritual Christian is one governed by the Word of God. Where do you think most believers, honestly, land on that spectrum most of the time? What makes it so easy to drift toward being emotion-led rather than Word-led?

3. The Role of the Mind Pastor Mirek pointed to Romans 8:6 — "to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace" — and emphasized that victory over sin begins with where we set our minds. What are the most common things competing for mental real estate in your average week? How intentional are you about redirecting your thoughts toward Scripture when temptation or negativity creeps in?

4. Making No Provision for the Flesh He challenged the group with Romans 13:14 — "make no provision for the flesh" — and gave very practical examples: the atmospheres we enter, the content we consume, and the company we keep. Without getting into confession mode, what is one area of life where most people underestimate how much their environment shapes their spiritual health? What does "staying far from the door of temptation" actually look like in modern everyday life?

5. Fleeing vs. Fighting Pastor Mirek used 1 Corinthians 6:18 — "flee immorality" — and told the story of Jack Hayford, who walked away from a situation at his workplace before it became a crisis. He noted that Hayford left not because he had already fallen, but because he recognized where things were heading. Why do you think it's so difficult for people to walk away before a situation becomes a problem, rather than after? What gets in the way of that kind of early, humble self-awareness?

6. Community and Accountability Pastor Mirek closed by referencing Galatians 6 — that when a brother or sister falls, we restore them with meekness, recognizing it could have been any one of us. What does a church community that genuinely helps people break free from sin actually look like in practice? What would need to change in most small groups for that kind of gracious accountability to feel safe enough to actually happen?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, identify one specific recurring temptation or sinful habit that you have been treating too lightly — something you have been tolerating rather than actively resisting. Take one concrete step to remove provision for it: delete an app, change a routine, avoid a particular environment, or reach out to one trusted person and ask them to check in with you about it by next Sunday. Write it down privately, pray over it by name, and bring it under the authority of your new identity in Christ.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray for renewed minds: Ask God to help each group member set their thoughts consistently on His Word rather than on emotions, circumstances, or cultural pressure — especially in the moments when temptation feels strongest.

  • Pray for holy boldness to flee: Ask the Holy Spirit to sharpen each person's spiritual awareness so they recognize danger early — and give them the courage to walk away without feeling the need to justify, explain, or push the boundary first.

  • Pray for grace-filled community: Ask God to make this small group and this church a place where people feel genuinely safe to admit struggle, receive restoration without shame, and walk alongside one another toward real spiritual maturity.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Romans 6:14 (NKJV) "For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace."

Leader's Tip: If the conversation stalls on Question 4 or 5, invite the group to think about someone they respect spiritually — what boundaries or habits have they noticed in that person's life? Sometimes it's easier to observe wisdom in others before we can name it in ourselves.

You Are Already Dead to Sin

Romans 6:2 — "How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?"

I want you to grab hold of something that genuinely excites me every time I read it — you are already dead to sin. Not trying to die to it. Not working toward it. Already dead. When Jesus went to that cross, your old man, that unregenerate self that was chained to sin's power, went with Him. The Bible doesn't say your old man is sick or wounded or struggling. It says crucified. Done. Finished. Now, I know what you're thinking — "Pastor, I still mess up." I hear you. But here's the difference: you're not a sinner trying to become holy. You're a holy spirit-being who sometimes lets the flesh take the wheel. That changes everything about how you fight. You're not fighting for victory. You're fighting from victory. Wake up today, sleepyhead. The wicked witch is dead. Rise up in that truth and walk in it, in Jesus' name.

Lord, help me truly believe what Your Word says about me — that my old man is dead and I am alive to You. Teach me to walk today from victory, not toward it. Thank You that the cross already settled this, in Jesus' name, amen.

Write Romans 6:2 on a sticky note and place it somewhere you'll see it first thing — your mirror, your phone, your coffee mug — and say it aloud before you do anything else.

No Condemnation — Walk Free

Romans 8:1 — "There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit."

One of the greatest weapons the enemy uses against us isn't temptation itself — it's the condemnation that follows. You get tempted, maybe you stumble, and suddenly that voice starts: "You're worthless. God can't use you. Look at what you just did." And before you know it, your faith hand is withered and weak, and you can't reach up to heaven the way you're meant to. But listen to me — God says there is NOW no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. Not tomorrow when you get it together. Now. I've watched people carry guilt around like a backpack full of rocks, dragging themselves through life when Jesus already paid the full price. Yes, repent quickly when you miss it. Yes, get back on track. But then receive His forgiveness completely and walk free. You are not defined by your worst moment. You are defined by His best moment — the cross.

Father, I receive Your forgiveness right now and I choose to let go of the guilt I've been carrying. Help me walk in the freedom You already purchased for me, and silence the voice of condemnation with the truth of Your Word, in Jesus' name, amen.

Identify one area where you've been carrying guilt or condemnation. Speak Romans 8:1 over that specific situation out loud, by name, and then thank God for His forgiveness.

Feed Your Spirit, Starve Your Flesh

Ephesians 1:3 — "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ."

Every spiritual blessing is already yours. Every single one. That means the power to overcome sin, the strength to say no, the ability to walk in holiness — it's all been deposited into your account in Christ Jesus. But here's the thing I've learned: blessings deposited aren't always blessings activated. Your spirit man needs feeding. Just like your body gets weak without food, your spirit gets weak without the Word, without worship, without time in God's presence. And a weak spirit means a loud flesh. The flesh doesn't get quieter on its own — you have to drown it out. Every time you open your Bible, every time you lift your hands in worship, every time you pray in the Spirit, you are sowing to your spirit. And what you sow, you reap. I promise you this — the more consistently you feed your inner man, the quieter sin's voice becomes. Start today.

Lord, I want to be a person who feeds their spirit daily and not just when things get hard. Give me hunger for Your Word and Your presence that outweighs every craving of my flesh, in Jesus' name, amen.

Spend at least 10 uninterrupted minutes today reading the Bible — not as a task, but as a meal for your spirit. Ask God to make one verse alive to you before you close it.

Set Your Mind and Win the Battle

1 Corinthians 6:18 — "Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body."

The Bible doesn't say stand firm against immorality. It says flee. Run. Get distance between you and that temptation fast, because of the gravitational pull of sin — the closer you get, the stronger it pulls. I've counseled enough people over the years to know that nobody falls into serious sin in one giant leap. It's always a slow drift — a look here, a thought entertained there, a boundary nudged a little further. That's why Romans 8:6 says the carnally minded person sets their mind on the things of the flesh. Your mind is the battlefield. What you set your mind on determines what your life produces. So be ruthless about what you watch, what you listen to, who you spend time with. Make no provision for the flesh, as Romans 13:14 says. Don't give it an inch. Your spirit man is stronger, but only when your mind is set on things above.

Lord, help me be ruthless about guarding my mind today. Show me anything I've been giving an inch to that's been taking a mile, and give me the courage to flee it, in Jesus' name, amen.

Do one practical thing today to remove an easy access point to temptation — delete an app, change a habit, move out of an atmosphere that's been pulling you in the wrong direction.

Shine — You Were Made for This

Romans 8:6 — "For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."

Life and peace. That's what a spiritually minded person walks in. Not striving, not white-knuckling their way through temptation, not dragging themselves to the finish line — life and peace. That's your inheritance. And I want to close this week by reminding you why all of this matters. It's not just about you living a clean life. It's about you shining in a world that's getting darker by the day. The world needs to see Spirit-filled, sin-crushing, joy-carrying believers who prove that Jesus actually changes people. You cannot shine at full brightness when sin is dimming your light. But every habit broken, every temptation resisted, every moment you choose the Word over the flesh, your light gets brighter. We've got a race to run and a world to reach, and God needs you at full capacity. You were made for this. So rise up this weekend, walk in the Spirit, and let the world see what Jesus looks like in a human life.

Father, I want to be someone who shines for You — genuinely, powerfully, consistently. Help me end this week stronger than I started it, and carry that light into everything I do, in Jesus' name, amen.

Share one truth from this week's devotionals with someone — a friend, a family member, or someone in your church — and encourage them in their own walk with God.
