You Were Born to Overcome
Overcoming isn't automatic, it requires intentional steps. In this message, Pastor Mirek Hufton launches a series on the church's theme, Overcoming All, beginning with Step One: Live for God. Using Romans 8:37's declaration that believers are "more than conquerors", literally super conquerors, Pastor Hufton challenges the congregation to make God their supreme priority, not a background feature of their lives. Living for God means loving God, obeying His Word, submitting to His ways, and scheduling consistent time in His presence. The Word of God, he emphasizes, is the source of overcoming power, without it, believers will be overcome rather than overcoming. The unforgettable illustration: Pastor Hufton shared his own cancer diagnosis thirty years ago. Given 90 days to live, he refused hospitalization and instead attended a faith conference, because he recognized the Word of God was the battle he needed to fight first. Today, he stands 30 years cancer-free. You were created to overcome. The power is available, but you must engage it.

"Overcoming All: Step One – Live for God"
Based on the January 7, 2024 sermon by Pastor Mirek Hufton
1. SERMON RECAP
Pastor Mirek Hufton launched the church's 2024 theme of "Overcoming All" by teaching that living an overcoming life doesn't happen automatically — it requires intentional steps. Drawing from Romans 8:36-37, he challenged the congregation that becoming a "super conqueror" only happens through Christ, which means prioritizing God's Word above everything else. He emphasized that submission to God and His Word must come before believers can effectively resist the enemy and walk in genuine victory.
2. KEY SCRIPTURE
Romans 8:37 (NKJV) "Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us."
3. ICE BREAKER
Think about your daily morning routine. What is the very first thing you reach for when you wake up — and what does that say about your priorities right now?
4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
-
Pastor Mirek described the difference between being an "overcomer" and being "overcome" — and admitted that even believers can go through seasons of feeling overcome. Can you think of a season in your life when you felt more overcome than overcoming? Without going into painful detail, what do you think contributed to that?
-
He used the word "prioritize," defining it as "a concern or desire that comes before all others." On an honest scale, where does time with God currently rank among your daily priorities? What tends to consistently bump it lower on the list?
-
Pastor Mirek shared that you can only truly know God through His Word, referencing John 1:1 and Psalm 119:11 ("I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you"). What practical habits — good or bad — have shaped how much of God's Word actually lives inside you right now?
-
He made a strong connection between submission and authority, saying you have to learn to submit to God before you can effectively resist the devil (James 4:7). Does that order — submit first, then resist — change how you think about spiritual warfare? Why or why not?
-
Pastor Mirek pointed to Psalm 119:50, "Your word gives me life," and shared his personal story of facing a cancer diagnosis and choosing to pursue the Word of God at a faith conference rather than immediate hospitalization. What does a story like that stir up in you — doubt, inspiration, questions? Be honest.
-
He closed by challenging the group with 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 — that Christ died so we would no longer live for ourselves but for Him. In practical, everyday terms, what does "living for God rather than yourself" actually look like in your week?
5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE
This week, choose one specific time slot of at least 15 minutes each day and designate a physical spot in your home as your personal place to meet with God. Write the time and location down, put it in your phone calendar as a recurring appointment, and show up for all seven days — even when you don't feel like it. At your next small group meeting, share honestly whether you kept the appointment and what you noticed when you did or didn't.
6. PRAYER POINTS
-
Hunger for the Word: Pray that each group member develops a genuine, growing appetite for Scripture — not out of obligation, but out of authentic love for God.
-
Breaking cycles of defeat: Pastor Mirek spoke about cycles of sin, sickness, and lack that repeat in people's lives. Pray specifically that God would reveal any area where someone in the group is tolerating defeat rather than rising up as the overcomer they were created to be.
-
Family and the next generation: He passionately called parents to make God the undisputed center of their homes. Pray for families represented in the group — that parents would have courage and consistency to build their children on the Word.
7. MEMORY VERSE
Psalm 119:11 (NKJV) "Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You."
"Seek Me and live." — Amos 5:4 Leader's Note: Encourage your group that this guide is not about having all the right answers — it's about taking one honest step closer to God this week. The goal of revival, as Pastor Mirek reminded us, is a personal reset in each believer's walk.
Daily Devotional
Seek Him and Live
Psalm 119:2 — "Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, who seek Him with their whole heart."
I've been thinking about what it means to truly seek God — not with half a heart, not squeezed in between everything else on our calendar, but with our whole heart. When I was facing cancer thirty years ago, I didn't crawl into a hospital bed and give up. I ran toward the Word. I ran toward His presence. That desperation changed everything. Friend, seeking God isn't passive. It's purposeful. It's scheduled. It's a daily decision to say, "God, You are my priority — not my career, not my comfort, not my calendar." When you seek Him wholeheartedly, you discover something remarkable: He was already reaching back toward you. Blessed — genuinely, deeply blessed — are those who pursue Him first. That blessing isn't just for Sunday mornings. It's available every single Monday of your life.
Lord, I want to seek You with my whole heart today, not just the leftover pieces. Forgive me when I've made You an afterthought. Help me to make You my first thought, my first reach, my greatest priority this week.
Hide the Word Deep
Psalm 119:11 — "Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You."
I've told our congregation this many times: you cannot fight a word battle without the Word inside you. When I was walking through the hardest season of my life, I kept putting the Word in — sermon after sermon, scripture after scripture — because I knew the battle would be won or lost on the inside. Hiding God's Word in your heart isn't old-fashioned or religious. It's strategic. It's warfare preparation. The enemy knows which believers carry the Word and which ones don't. When temptation comes — and it will come — what comes out of you is what you've been putting in. If you've been feeding on fear, worry, and the noise of the world, that's what surfaces under pressure. But if you've been hiding His Word deep in your heart? Something powerful rises up instead. Start filling your heart today.
Father, I want Your Word so deep in me that when pressure comes, it's Your truth that rises up first. Help me to be disciplined and intentional about filling my heart with scripture every single day.
Your Word Gives Me Life
Psalm 119:50 — "This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your word has given me life."
Comfort in affliction. That phrase stops me every time. Not comfort after the affliction passes — comfort right in the middle of it. I know what it feels like to sit across from a doctor who tells you that you have ninety days to live. I know what it feels like when the news is devastating and the walls seem to close in. And I can tell you from personal experience: the Word of God is not just nice poetry for the good days. It is life-giving medicine for the darkest moments. When everything around you is shaking, the Word becomes your anchor. When your emotions are screaming fear, the Word speaks louder. Friend, whatever affliction you are facing right now — a broken relationship, a financial crisis, a health battle, a prodigal child — there is a word from God that carries life directly into your situation. Go find it. Receive it. Let it live in you.
God, in the middle of whatever I'm facing today, I choose to receive Your Word as comfort and life. Speak to me through scripture. Let Your truth be louder than my circumstances and stronger than my fear.
Living for More Than Yourself
2 Corinthians 5:15 — "He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again."
One of the most radical things Jesus ever said was this: if you want to follow Me, deny yourself. In our world — a world obsessed with self-promotion, self-care, and self-fulfillment — that sounds almost offensive. But I've learned something over decades of ministry: the most fulfilled people I have ever met are the ones who stopped living for themselves and started living for God and others. When you give your energy, your time, your money, your talents toward what God is building, something supernatural happens inside you. A fire starts. A momentum builds. You stop asking "What's in it for me?" and start asking "Lord, what can I do today?" That shift — from self-centered to God-centered living — is where overcoming power begins. Jesus didn't just die so you could be forgiven. He died so you could be transformed into someone who lives entirely for Him.
Jesus, thank You for dying for me when I was living entirely for myself. I surrender my agenda today. Show me someone I can serve, somewhere I can give, something I can do that brings glory to You rather than credit to me.
I Am a Super Conqueror
Romans 8:37 — "Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us."
I love that word — more than conquerors. The original Greek actually means super conquerors. That's who you are. Not someday. Right now. Through Jesus. But here's what I've learned, and I want you to hear this clearly: overcoming doesn't happen automatically. It's a step-by-step walk. You submit to God. You prioritize His Word. You choose to live for Him daily. And as you do, the authority inside you grows. The devil doesn't get to write the final chapter of your story. Your business, your marriage, your health, your family — nothing is beyond the overcoming power of Jesus Christ working through a believer who refuses to quit. You were created to overcome. You were redeemed to overcome. You were given the Word, the Spirit, and the love of God so that you could rise up and put every enemy under your feet. Don't you dare settle for anything less.
Lord, I declare today that I am more than a conqueror through Your love. I refuse to live defeated when You have already won. Strengthen my spirit, fill me with Your Word, and let me walk in overcoming power every single day.
