Being Established

Established in Truth: Grace for The Journey

Pastor Mirek Hufton · 2026-07-15

Key Scriptures: Hebrews 13:8-9, John 1:14-17, Ephesians 3:7 The heart of this message is simple but transformative: grace is not merely God's forgiveness, it is God's empowerment for every area of life. Drawing from Hebrews 13:9, Pastor Hufton challenges believers to be "established by grace," meaning rooted in the reality that God's ability is available for parenting, marriage, business, ministry, and every daily challenge we face. The Apostle Paul captures the balance perfectly in Ephesians 3:7, grace is freely given, yet it demands our participation. We receive it through humility and faith, not self-effort or worry. Pastor Hufton pointed to Karen Dunham, a woman who moved into dangerous Jericho alone, survived seven firebombings, and ultimately received official permission to plant ministry throughout Israel, a living example of what happens when extraordinary grace meets ordinary faithfulness. The takeaway: Frustration, anxiety, and burnout are signs we have stopped tapping into grace. The channel is faith; the power is His.

"Established in Truth: Grace for The Journey"

A Teaching by Pastor Mirek Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Mirek Hufton opened from Hebrews 13:8-9 and challenged the congregation with a central question: are we truly established in the grace of God, or are we quietly grinding through life on our own strength? He unpacked grace not as a vague theological idea but as God's real, practical empowerment available for every area of life — parenting, marriage, work, ministry, and relationships. He reminded us that wherever we see frustration, anxiety, and burnout taking hold, those are signs we have drifted from tapping into the grace that God has freely made available through Jesus Christ.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Hebrews 13:8-9 (NKJV)

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Do not be carried away with various and strange doctrines, for it is good that the heart be established by grace."

3. ICE BREAKER

Think of one area of your life where you seem to have a natural ease and energy that others might find exhausting or difficult. What is it, and have you ever thought of that as a gift rather than just a personality trait?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Starting with the basics Pastor Mirek described grace as God's empowerment — His ability given to us, unearned and undeserved, to do what we are called to do. How does that definition of grace differ from the way you may have heard grace described before? Does it change anything about how you think of your daily life?

2. Digging into the text In John 1:16, the Amplified Bible renders the phrase "grace for grace" as "one grace after another, favor upon favor, gift heaped upon gift." What does it mean to you personally that grace is not a one-time deposit but a continuous, layered supply? Can you think of a season in your life when you experienced that kind of unfolding provision?

3. Honest reflection Pastor Mirek pointed out that frustration, anxiety, and worry are signals that we have stopped tapping into grace and started relying on our own effort. Without going into anything too personal, can the group identify any common situations — at work, at home, in relationships — where people tend to slip into that pattern without realizing it? What does it feel like when that happens?

4. The balance of effort and grace He was careful to say that grace does not mean passivity. He referenced Ephesians 3:7, where Paul speaks of the "effective working" of God's power, and he echoed Paul's words from 1 Corinthians 15 that he "labored more abundantly than them all, yet not I, but the grace of God." How do you personally navigate the tension between working hard and trusting God? Where does the line sit for you between striving and resting in grace?

5. Personal calling and grace Pastor Mirek made the observation that if something consistently feels like a grinding strain with no sense of flow or favor, it may be worth asking whether you are in the right place or assignment. At the same time, he celebrated the idea that God will take what you have been through and put His grace on it for the next task. How has your own history — including the difficult parts — shaped the unique grace you carry today?

6. Receiving versus wasting grace Drawing from Paul's warning in 1 Corinthians 6 about not receiving the grace of God in vain, Pastor Mirek challenged the group to consider whether grace is being actively received or quietly ignored. What practical habits or mindsets might help someone stay consistently connected to the grace God has already made available, rather than drifting back into self-reliance?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

Choose one specific area of your life this week — a relationship, a work situation, a personal struggle, or a ministry responsibility — where you have been operating primarily out of your own effort and strength. Before you begin each day this week, take two or three minutes to pause, name that area out loud in prayer, and ask God specifically for His grace and empowerment for that task. At the end of the week, write down one way you noticed a difference in your attitude, your energy, or the outcome. Come ready to share briefly with the group at the next meeting.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each group member would develop a genuine sensitivity to the difference between striving in their own strength and resting in the empowerment that God supplies, and that they would grow quicker at recognizing when they have slipped back into self-reliance.

  • Pray for anyone in the group facing a specific assignment, relationship, or season that feels beyond their natural capacity — that they would experience a tangible release of grace for that situation in the coming week.

  • Pray that the whole church community would be established — rooted, settled, and immovable — in the grace that came through Jesus Christ, just as Hebrews 13:9 instructs, and that no strange or discouraging doctrine would pull them away from that foundation.

7. MEMORY VERSE

John 1:16 (NKJV)

"And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace."

Leader's Note: This guide is designed to take approximately 60 to 75 minutes. Feel free to choose three or four discussion questions that feel most relevant to where your group is right now rather than working through all six. The goal is genuine, unhurried conversation — not covering every question.

Grace Is Already Waiting for You

2 Corinthians 9:8 — "And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work."

I want to talk to you about something that stirred me up this week — grace. Not just as a theological word, but as a living, breathing reality available to you right now. Grace is God's empowerment. It's His ability flowing into your inability. I've learned in my own life that when I'm stretched to the edge, when I feel like I'm on a line, that's exactly when I need to stop straining and start asking. Ask for the grace. Ask for it specifically. Ask for it boldly. God doesn't want you white-knuckling your way through your calling, your marriage, your job, your finances. He has already made abundant grace available. The question isn't whether it exists — it's whether you're reaching out and receiving it today.

Father, I admit I've been straining when I should have been asking. Right now I open my hands and my heart to receive Your grace for everything I'm facing today. Thank You that it's already there, waiting for me.

Write down your biggest challenge today and speak this out loud over it: "There is grace available for this, and I receive it now in Jesus' name."

Flow, Don't Force

Zechariah 4:6 — "Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty."

I absolutely love what I do. Pastoring brings me genuine joy. But I'll be honest with you — there are moments where I have to deliberately tap into grace. And when I do, something shifts. There's a flow that comes. An ease. A joy that wasn't there before. I've noticed that when I'm forcing something in my own strength, it feels exactly like that — forced. But when grace comes on, it's like a current carrying you forward rather than you swimming upstream. If everything in your life feels like a constant strain with no relief, I want you to pause and ask yourself — am I in the right lane? God's grace is always present where His calling is. When you're walking in your assignment, the grace will confirm it. Stop forcing. Start flowing.

Holy Spirit, I don't want to keep pushing in my own strength. Show me where I've been straining and help me surrender that to You today. Let Your flow replace my force.

Identify one area where you've been straining rather than trusting. Spend five minutes in quiet prayer, releasing that specific thing to God.

Show Up — Your Presence Carries Grace

Proverbs 16:15 — "When a king's face brightens, it means life; his favor is like a rain cloud in spring."

We live in a world of emails and phone calls and texts. And listen, I use all of those things. But I want to remind you of something I've learned the hard way — your physical presence carries something that a message simply cannot. When you show up, grace shows up with you. I think about that grey car park downtown. Nine months. An unfriendly lady in charge. I kept finding reasons to go back. And every time I went back, God gave me favor. It didn't happen in one visit. But the grace kept building. Now I can pick up the phone and get that lot any time I need it. Favor was built through consistent, grace-filled presence. Don't underestimate what happens when you walk into a room with God's grace on you. Your presence is a tool. Use it.

Lord, remind me that wherever I go, Your grace goes with me. Give me courage to show up in person when I'd rather hide behind a screen, and let Your favor be evident on my face and my words.

Make one in-person visit or phone call today that you've been putting off — to a colleague, neighbour, or someone you've been meaning to encourage.

Make a Demand on Grace

Hebrews 4:16 — "Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."

I love this verse because it tells you exactly what to do — approach with confidence. Not timidity. Not hoping God might spare a little grace your way. Confidence. The writer says come boldly to the throne. Come and make a demand on what's available. In prayer this week I encouraged our people to pick their biggest need and receive grace for it — no stress, no worry, no anxiety. Because grace covers relational needs, financial needs, physical needs, social needs. Every single category of your life. I don't want you receiving the grace of God in vain — letting it sit unclaimed because you didn't ask specifically enough. Get specific with God. Tell Him exactly what you need. Name the challenge. Name the relationship. Name the number. He's not overwhelmed by the details. He's waiting for your confidence.

Father, I come boldly to Your throne today. I name my need specifically before You right now, and I receive grace — Your empowerment — to meet it fully. I will not receive Your grace in vain.

Write a specific, detailed prayer request — not vague, but precise. Bring it before God with confidence and leave it at His throne today.

Grace Spoken Is Grace Released

Romans 10:17 — "Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ."

I spoke grace over people this week. I spoke it over futures, over families, over young people finding their calling, over marriages, over finances, over healing. And I want you to understand — speaking grace isn't just motivational language. It's releasing something real. Faith comes by hearing. When you declare the grace of God over your own life and over the people around you, something moves in the spiritual realm. Don't keep grace a private, silent thought. Speak it. Speak grace over your children before they walk out the door. Speak grace over your work before you start your day. Speak grace over your marriage at the dinner table. You carry God's empowerment everywhere you go, and your words are one of the primary ways it gets released. Open your mouth. Hallelujah — let grace flow.

Father, train my mouth to speak grace rather than doubt, and faith rather than fear. Let the words I release today carry Your power into every situation and every person I encounter.

Speak grace out loud over three people in your life today — say their name, and declare a specific blessing of God's grace and empowerment over them.
