Allowing God's Word to Work for You

Pastor Mirek Hufton · 2021-04-18

In this practical message, Pastor Mirek Hufton challenges believers to stop treating God's Word casually and start actively putting pressure on it, trusting it to produce real results in every area of life. Drawing from a vivid memory of watching an African farmer near the Drakensberg Mountains guide six yoked oxen through a field, Pastor Hufton painted a powerful picture: the oxen did the work, the farmer simply guided them. God's Word, he explained, operates the same way. It carries supernatural power to pull believers out of sickness, financial lack, broken relationships, and impossible situations, but only when we deliberately harness it. The key scriptures, 1 John 2:14 and Isaiah 55:11, anchor the message: God's Word will not return void. It will accomplish exactly what He sent it to do. The practical takeaway: commit fully to the Word, pay deliberate attention to it, write it on cards, speak it back to God, and keep increasing the pressure, until it produces the harvest God promised.

"Allowing God's Word to Work for You"

Based on the Teaching of Pastor Mirek Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

Pastor Mirek Hufton taught that the Word of God contains genuine, active power to produce change in every area of life — relationships, finances, health, and character — but that this power must be deliberately engaged. He used the vivid image of a farmer with six yoked oxen to illustrate that the Word, like those oxen, will do the heavy work, but believers must intentionally get behind it and let it pull. He challenged the congregation to move beyond religious familiarity and mental agreement with Scripture into a place of deep commitment, focused attention, and persistent pressure on God's Word until it produces the fruit God intended.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

1 John 2:14 "I have written to you, fathers, because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one."

3. ICE BREAKER

Think of a time you tried to accomplish something difficult and realized you were doing all the hard work yourself when there was a better tool or resource available that could have done the job for you. What happened, and what did you learn from it?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Pastor Mirek described three kinds of soil from Mark 4 — the wayside hearer whose word is stolen, the shallow-root hearer who falls away under pressure, and the thorny-ground hearer whose word is choked by the cares of the world. Which of these three responses to the Word do you find yourself most tempted toward in your current season of life, and why?

2. Pastor Mirek drew a strong distinction between mental assent — agreeing with the Word in your mind without it producing real inner change — and genuine, acting faith. What does the difference between those two things actually look like in everyday life? Can you think of an area where you have mentally agreed with a scripture for a long time without seeing it translate into real change?

3. He described "putting pressure on the Word" as deliberately choosing specific scriptures for a specific need, writing them out, speaking them regularly, and bringing them before God like a legal document. What would it look like practically for your group to take one shared need and apply that kind of focused, sustained pressure together over the next month?

4. Pastor Mirek pointed to the story of Abraham in Romans 4, noting that Abraham "did not waver in unbelief" even though his body was past the point of natural ability, because he was "fully convinced" that God was able to perform what He had promised. What is the difference between being fully convinced and simply being optimistic or positive? What builds that kind of deep conviction, and what tends to erode it?

5. He warned that over-familiarity with the Word — hearing it so often that it stops producing awe or expectation — is one of the greatest dangers facing the church today. How does a person recognise that kind of spiritual familiarity settling into their own heart, and what are some practical ways to guard against it?

6. Pastor Mirek pointed to Isaiah 55:10-11, which promises that the Word of God will not return void but will accomplish what God sent it to do. Discuss a time when you held onto a specific scripture through a difficult season and eventually saw it produce what it promised. What kept you holding on, and what does that experience teach the group about persistence in the Word?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, identify one specific area of your life where you have a genuine need — whether it concerns health, a relationship, finances, or character. Find one or two scriptures that speak directly to that need, write them out on a card or in your phone, and read them aloud to yourself at least three times each day. When you pray over that need, bring those specific scriptures to God and speak them back to Him as the basis of your request. Come back to the group next week prepared to share which scriptures you chose and what you noticed happening on the inside as you gave deliberate, focused attention to them.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that each member of the group would develop a fresh sense of awe and reverence for the Word of God, moving beyond familiarity into genuine expectation that the Word is alive and active in their specific circumstances right now.

  • Pray for perseverance when pressure comes against the Word that has been planted — that each person would hold their ground under tribulation rather than letting discouragement or distraction choke what God is growing in them.

  • Pray that the Holy Spirit would illuminate one specific scripture to each group member this week that speaks directly to their greatest current need, and that they would have the courage and discipline to act on it rather than simply agreeing with it mentally.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Isaiah 55:11 "So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it."

The Word That Works

Psalm 107:20 — "He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction."

I want you to picture those six oxen I watched plowing that African field. Those massive animals weren't just walking around looking impressive — they were pulling with everything they had, turning hard ground into something fruitful. That's exactly what I believe God's Word does for you and me. It's not decoration. It's not religious wallpaper on our walls. It's living, breathing, pulling power that can drag you out of any muck and mire you're stuck in right now. But here's what I've learned — those oxen had to be hooked up to actually work. The Word has to be hooked up in your heart too. You can own a Bible, carry it to church, know all the right verses, and still be pushing that plow by yourself. I want to encourage you this week — let God's Word do the heavy lifting. Hook up to it. It will produce every single time.

Father, thank You that Your Word carries power I can't manufacture on my own. Help me stop pushing through life alone and start leaning into what You've already spoken. I receive Your Word as alive and active in my life today.

Write Psalm 107:20 on a card and place it somewhere you'll see it at least three times today — your mirror, your dashboard, your desk.

Committed to the Plumbob

Psalm 119:130 — "The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple."

I've hung commercial wallpaper, and I can tell you — if you don't follow the plumbob, nothing lines up. What looks perfectly straight to your eye can be completely crooked. I see the same thing happening in our lives when we start measuring truth by culture, feelings, or popular opinion rather than by the Word of God. America right now is hanging wallpaper without a plumbob, and nothing is lining up. But I'm not here to talk about America — I'm here to talk about you and me. I made a decision years ago that this Book would be my level, my transit, my plumbob. Not what feels right. Not what the counselor said. Not what's trending. The Word is the standard I measure everything by. When you commit fully to that — when you make that decision in your spirit — everything else begins to line up. Commitment isn't optional. It's the foundation.

Lord, I commit my life to Your Word as my absolute standard today. Forgive me for the times I've measured truth by my feelings instead of Your Word. Let Your light guide every decision I make.

Identify one area of your life where culture's "plumbob" has replaced God's Word, and speak one scripture out loud over that area today.

Paying Attention Changes Everything

Psalm 107:43 — "Whoever is wise, let him heed these things and consider the great love of the Lord."

When I was fighting cancer, I didn't take the Word casually. I drove to conferences. I flew to Tulsa. I sat in meetings twice a day for ten days. I wrote scriptures on cards. Some people thought that was extreme — I thought dying was more extreme. Here's what I've discovered about our attention: whatever you give it to grows. If you give your attention to social media, fear, and bad news, those things grow enormous in your life. But if you give deliberate, focused attention to the Word of God — if you carry it in your pocket, speak it in your car, meditate on it before sleep — it grows in you like seed in good ground. I'm not asking you to move to Tulsa. I'm asking you to be intentional. Pick one verse for your specific need and pay attention to it like your life depends on it. Because honestly? It does.

Jesus, I want to give my best attention to Your Word, not my leftovers. Help me cut out the distractions that choke what You're trying to grow in me. Teach me to be a deliberate, focused student of Your Word.

Choose one specific scripture for your greatest current need. Set three phone alarms today labeled "WORD" — when each alarm goes off, stop and read that verse out loud.

Putting Pressure on the Promise

Isaiah 55:11 — "So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it."

I love this verse so much because it removes all the guesswork. God isn't saying His Word might produce or could possibly work if conditions are just right. He's saying it SHALL accomplish exactly what He sent it to do. Every time. No exceptions. So when I talk about putting pressure on the Word, I mean going to God like an attorney presenting a legal document. Don't pray the problem — pray the promise. Stop telling God how big your mountain is and start telling your mountain how big your God is. When I've faced financial pressure in this church, I didn't back down from giving — I took it up a level. Why? Because I was putting pressure on the Word. I was saying, God, You said give and it shall be given. I believe You. I'm acting on it. That kind of bold, scripture-based faith puts the enemy on the run and puts God's power to work on your behalf.

Father, I bring Your Word back to You right now over my situation. You said it would not return void, and I'm standing on that today. I choose to believe Your promise more than I believe what I see.

Write out a one-paragraph prayer that quotes at least two scriptures specifically about your current need — then pray it out loud, boldly, like you mean every word.

Fully Convinced

Psalm 107:2 — "Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy."

Romans 4 says Abraham was "fully convinced" that what God promised, God was able to perform. I love that phrase — fully convinced. Not partially convinced. Not convinced on good days. Fully. Abraham didn't look at his hundred-year-old body and adjust his faith downward. He didn't look at Sarah and revise his expectations. He looked at the promise and became more convinced every single day. That's where I want you and me to land by the end of this week. Not tossed around by every bad report, every economic headline, every doctor's word that contradicts the Word of God. Established. Grounded. Fully convinced. You're a child of Almighty God. You're redeemed. You're righteous before Him. He has a plan for your life. His Word will produce for you. Say it out loud. Speak what you believe. Because the redeemed of the Lord are supposed to say so — with their mouths, boldly, consistently, and without apology.

Lord, I want to be fully convinced like Abraham — not moved by what I see but anchored to what You said. Build that unshakeable assurance in my heart today. I declare that Your Word is working in my life right now.

Tell one person today — a family member, friend, or coworker — one specific thing God has promised you in His Word. Speak your faith out loud to someone else.
