How to Live Your Best Life

Pastor Mirek Hufton · 2026-06-21

What does it truly mean to live your best life? Pastor Mirek Hufton unpacked Ephesians 4:1-2, revealing that the word "worthy" carries the image of a balanced scale, because everything Jesus suffered for us, He desires to see reflected back through how we live. The first three chapters of Ephesians catalogue everything God has given us; chapters four through six call us to walk it out. Drawing on John 1:4, Colossians 1:10, and Colossians 3:20, Pastor Hufton outlined the building blocks of love-centered living: lowliness (humility), gentleness (meekness, power under restraint), long-suffering, and forbearance. Together, these qualities create the conditions where love can genuinely operate. The memorable illustration? A powerful horse, 1,600 pounds of muscle, completely controlled by a simple bit and rein. That picture of immense strength held under restraint is exactly what God calls us to: not weakness, but strength submitted to His purposes. The bottom line: Your best life begins the moment you choose to walk in love.

"How to Live Your Best Life" — Pastor Mirek Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

In this message, I shared that Jesus didn't just come to save us — He came to make our lives genuinely better. Drawing from Ephesians 4, I unpacked what it means to "walk worthy" of our calling, which is about balancing what God has done for us with how we actually live each day. The pathway to your best life runs straight through a love-centered lifestyle built on humility, gentleness, long-suffering, and forbearance toward one another.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Colossians 1:10 (NKJV) "That you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God."

3. ICE BREAKER

What is one small habit or routine in your daily life that genuinely makes your life better — something simple that you'd recommend to anyone?

(Keep it light and fun — this is just to get everyone talking!)

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Question 1 — Opening the Word In the sermon, I described the word "worthy" using the image of a balance scale — the idea that what God has done for us should be balanced by how we live for Him. When you think about everything Jesus went through for you personally, how does that picture change the way you see your everyday choices?

Question 2 — Going Deeper I talked about humility as "the spirit that never takes offense." That's honestly a high bar! Think about a recent moment when your pride was touched by something someone said or did. Without naming names, what did that moment reveal about where you are in your walk with humility?

Question 3 — Getting Personal Gentleness, or meekness, is strength under restraint — like a powerful horse responding to a gentle touch on the reins. Where in your life right now do you feel God asking you to hold back a reaction that you're fully capable of making? What would it look like to choose gentleness in that situation?

Question 4 — Connecting the Scriptures John 1:4 tells us that "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men." And Philippians 3:20 reminds us our true citizenship is in heaven. How does remembering where you really belong — and Who your life actually comes from — help you handle the daily friction of relating to difficult people?

Question 5 — Real Talk I mentioned that about 90% of the time, when someone steps on your toes, they don't even realize they did it. Has there been a time when you chose to just "let it pass" instead of addressing an offense — and it actually brought you more peace? Or has there been a time you wish you had? What did you learn?

Question 6 — Pulling It Together I challenged the group to speak out loud: "The love of God is in my heart, in Jesus' name." What does it practically look like for you to lead from your spirit rather than your emotions when things get tense at home, at work, or even here at church? What's one thing that helps you regroup?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, identify one specific relationship — a coworker, family member, neighbor, or friend — where you have been reacting from pride or emotion rather than love. Every morning for the next seven days, speak this declaration out loud before you interact with them: "The love of God is in my heart. I choose humility and gentleness today." Then, at your next group meeting, come ready to share one moment where that declaration actually made a difference in how you responded.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray for softened hearts — Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal specific areas of pride, short-temperedness, or unforgiveness that each group member needs to surrender this week.

  • Pray for the ability to truly forgive — Ask God to make forgiveness quick and genuine in your homes, friendships, and church family, just as He forgives us the moment we ask.

  • Pray for the outreach efforts — Lift up the Washington D.C. outreach, the Kenya teams, the Honduras and Vietnam missionaries, and every event coming up this weekend, asking God to draw people to Jesus through every interaction.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Colossians 1:10 (NKJV) "That you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God."

Leader's Note: Don't feel pressure to get through every question. It's better to go deep on two or three questions than to rush through all six. Let the conversation breathe — that's where real life change happens!

Life That Lights You Up

John 1:4 — "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men."

I want you to hear this straight from my heart — Jesus didn't come to make your life harder. He came to make it better. I know that sounds simple, but I've lived it. When God tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to leave corporate sales for full-time ministry, I honestly wasn't sure. I thought I was walking away from the good life. But I want to tell you today, the closer you get to Jesus, the more of His life gets into you — and that life is always an upgrade. It's not just eternal life waiting for you in heaven. It's real, breathing, joy-filled life right now. Jesus is life itself. When you draw near to Him, His light starts pushing out every dark corner. Stop settling for a dim version of what God intended. Step toward the light today.

Lord Jesus, thank You for being life itself. I want more of You flowing through me today — more light, more joy, more purpose. Help me draw closer to You and stop settling for less than Your best. Amen.

Write down one area of your life where you've been settling, and ask Jesus to bring His light into it today.

Walking Worthy — Balancing the Scale

Colossians 1:10 — "That you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God."

I've been thinking about those old-fashioned market scales — the kind where you keep adding weights until both sides balance perfectly. That image stuck with me when I studied the word "worthy" in Scripture. God gave everything for you. He laid His life down. He was beaten beyond recognition. He endured the cross — not because He had to, but because He loves you that much. Now He's simply asking, "Can you balance the scale?" Not to earn His love — you already have that. But because when you truly see what He's done, you want your daily life to reflect it. Walking worthy isn't about perfection. It's about direction. It's asking every single day, "Does my conduct line up with what Jesus did for me?" You don't have to take giant leaps. Just take one step forward today.

Father, when I really think about what Jesus went through for me, I'm humbled. Help my daily life reflect Your sacrifice — not out of obligation, but out of genuine love and gratitude. I want to balance the scale. Amen.

Before making one decision today — big or small — pause and ask yourself, "Does this walk worthy of what Jesus did for me?"

Humility Opens Every Door

Colossians 3:12 — "Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering."

I'll be honest with you — humility is something the Holy Spirit keeps working on in me personally. Just recently He said to me, "That attitude you had the other day? That was pride, not humility." And He was right. Here's what I've learned: humility is the door that love walks through. Without it, love can't get in. Pride slams that door shut every time. True humility isn't thinking less of yourself — it's having a genuine, honest view of who you are without the performance and the pretense. I love this: humility is that precious quality that makes us feel smaller as we grow greater. And here's the one that stopped me cold — humility is the spirit that never takes offense. When pride gets touched, we retaliate. But when humility is operating, we respond with grace. That's your calling today. Walk humbly and watch love flow freely.

Jesus, You called Yourself meek and lowly in heart, and I want that same spirit. Show me where pride is quietly closing doors in my life. Teach me to walk humbly so Your love can move through me freely. Amen.

When you feel offended or overlooked today, pause before responding — choose one moment to let humility speak louder than your pride.

Long-Suffering Is Love With Staying Power

Colossians 3:13 — "Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do."

I love the way that word looks — long-suffering. It's long. It stretches. And honestly, loving real people in real life requires exactly that kind of stretch. People will step on your toes, sometimes without even knowing it. About ninety percent of the time, the person who hurt you has no idea they did it. That's why forbearance — putting up with what's disagreeable in others — is such a powerful act of love. It's not weakness. It's strength held under beautiful restraint. I've had to go out and pray in the Holy Ghost just to keep my cool in a business meeting. I've had to tell my emotions, "Calm down, in Jesus' name," and mean it. Love isn't just a feeling — it's a daily choice to bear with people the same way Christ bears with us. Keep the forgiver button on. Always.

Lord, thank You for Your unending patience with me. Help me extend that same grace to the people around me today — especially the ones who are hardest to love. Keep my forgiver button switched on. Amen.

Think of one person who has recently frustrated you — say a prayer of genuine forgiveness for them today, out loud if you can.

Love Is Already in You — Let It Out

Romans 5:5 — "The love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us."

Here's something I need you to grab hold of today — the love of God isn't something you have to manufacture from scratch. When you were born again, God placed His very nature inside you. His love is already in there. The reason I can call you to walk in love is because God already put it in you when He gave you His Spirit. Now, your emotions will rise up and try to run the show — I know mine do. Your feelings will tell you to retaliate, to stay offended, to give the silent treatment. But here's the truth I keep coming back to: that's your emotions talking, not your spirit. You have to speak to your soul and say, "The love of God is in my heart, in Jesus' name." Declare it. Live it. Give your life fully to God — no holding back — and I promise you, He will deliver a life beyond anything you imagined.

Holy Spirit, thank You that Your love already lives inside me. Help me stop letting my emotions drown out my spirit today. I choose to walk in Your love — fully, freely, and without holding back. Amen.

Speak this declaration out loud this morning: "The love of God is in my heart. I choose to walk in love today, in Jesus' name." Then look for one specific way to act on it before the day ends.
