Steps To Having Prayers Answered

Pastor Mirek Hufton · 2025-09-17

Based on Mark 11:24, "Whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them", Pastor Mirek Hufton challenges the common religious assumption that God sometimes simply says "no" to prayer, arguing instead that unanswered prayer is a word and faith issue, not a divine decision. Pastor Hufton walks through foundational steps to effective prayer: know what you want and find scripture to support it; ask God in faith; and actively guard your mind against doubt, fear, and negative voices. He emphasizes that faith is an engine of the spirit, not the mind, and that the words we speak either fuel or sabotage our prayers. In a memorable illustration, Pastor Hufton describes how a well-meaning "prophetess" approached him before a service with a troubling health warning, only for his annual physical the following Monday to declare him completely healthy. The story underscores his central point: believers must aggressively reject every voice, vision, or word that contradicts what God's Word promises. Based on Mark 11:22-24 and James 1:22

Steps To Having Prayers Answered

Small Group Discussion Guide

Based on the teaching by Pastor Mirek Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

In this message, I walked us through the practical steps to seeing our prayers answered, starting with the foundation that God's Word is not a religious decoration — it's a living truth we can actually work in our daily lives. I challenged us to get serious about three critical steps: deciding specifically what we want from God and finding scripture to back it up, asking God in faith while genuinely believing we receive when we pray, and guarding our minds fiercely against the doubt, fear, and negative voices that clog up the pipeline between our prayers and our answers. The bottom line is this — unanswered prayer is rarely a God problem; it's most often a Word problem, and the more of God's Word we get inside us, the more effective our prayer life becomes.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Mark 11:24 (NKJV) "Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them."

3. ICE BREAKER

Think back to a time when you really wanted something and had to wait for it — maybe a job, a trip, or even a table at a busy restaurant. How did the waiting feel, and what kept you from giving up?

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Getting Honest About Step One I talked about how you have to decide what you want from God before anything else can happen — and that you shouldn't pray for what you don't really want. Is it ever hard for you to get specific with God about what you're asking for? What makes it difficult to plant that flag in the ground and say, "This is what I'm believing for"?

2. The Word as Fuel I shared how spending years slowly working through the New Testament on my own — just me and Jesus, no one else's preconceived ideas — changed everything about how I understood faith and prayer. Jesus says in John 15:7 that if His words abide in you, you'll ask what you will and it will be done. How much of your prayer life is currently anchored in specific scriptures? What's one practical thing that might help you connect what you're praying for to what God's Word actually says about it?

3. Believe That You Receive — Right Now Mark 11:24 says to believe you receive when you pray — not after you see results, not after symptoms disappear, not after the bank account changes. That goes completely against how our natural minds work. Can you describe a time when you genuinely believed before you saw? What made that possible? What makes it hard?

4. The Battle for Your Mind I made a strong point that doubt and fear don't just appear out of nowhere — they often come through other people, through what we read, through what we allow ourselves to think about. Second Corinthians 10:5 tells us to cast down imaginations and bring every thought into captivity. What are the most common sources of doubt that come against your faith? How do you currently handle them, and is it working?

5. Words and Faith Are Connected I pointed us to 1 Peter 3:10, which says that whoever wants to "love life and see good days" must refrain their tongue from evil. I made the case that speaking contrary to what God says about you — giving voice to doubt and defeat — is itself a form of evil that works against your prayers. Does that challenge you or encourage you? How does what you say out loud about your situation reflect what you actually believe?

6. James 1:22 — Doers, Not Just Hearers James tells us that if we hear the Word but don't act on it, we're deceiving ourselves. I was pretty direct in saying that a lot of Christians hope for answers rather than applying the steps to receive them. Without pointing fingers at anyone else, where do you personally find the gap between what you believe in your head and what you're actively putting into practice in your faith life?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, pick one specific thing you have been praying about — something real and personal to you. Then do these three things before your group meets again:

  • Write it down in one clear sentence: "I am believing God for _____."
  • Find at least one scripture that speaks directly to what you're asking for and write it next to your request.
  • Speak that scripture out loud once every day this week — morning or evening, wherever works for you — and when doubt or a negative thought tries to come in, say out loud: "No, I reject that. I believe I receive, in Jesus' name."

Come back ready to share how it felt, what came against you, and what surprised you.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  1. For the Word to take root — Pray that each person in the group would develop a genuine, personal hunger for God's Word, not just religious information, so that their prayers are anchored in eternal truth rather than wishful thinking.

  2. For breakthrough in specific situations — Take a moment to let anyone who wants to share briefly what they are standing in faith for, then pray specifically and boldly over those needs together, agreeing according to Mark 11:24.

  3. For strong, disciplined minds — Pray that God would help every person in the group to recognize doubt and fear when they come, to resist them quickly, and to replace every negative thought with the truth of what God has already said in His Word.

7. MEMORY VERSE

Mark 11:24 (NKJV) "Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them."

Leader's Note: Don't feel pressure to get through every question. Read the room, follow the conversation where the Holy Spirit takes it, and give people space to be honest. The goal isn't covering content — it's genuine life change. You've got this!

Know What You're Asking For

Mark 11:24 — "Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask, when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them."

I've learned that one of the biggest reasons prayers go unanswered is simply this — we haven't decided what we actually want from God. We drift into prayer vague and uncertain, then wonder why heaven seems quiet. But Mark 11:24 is beautifully specific: *whatever things you ask*. That means you need to know what you're asking for. I remember when I finally stopped floating through my prayer life and put a stake in the ground — this is what I need from God, and here's what His Word says about it. That decision changed everything. Friend, before you pray another prayer today, get specific. Find the scripture that backs up your request. God's promises are yes and amen — not maybe. Plant your flag and don't move it.

Father, help me get specific with You today. Show me exactly what I need to ask for, and lead me to Your Word that confirms it. I trust that Your answer is already yes in Jesus' name.

Write down one specific need you're bringing to God this week, then find one scripture that promises God's provision in that area.

Ask — And Actually Believe

Mark 11:24 — "Whatever things you ask, when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them."

There's a world of difference between hoping God might answer and genuinely believing He already has. I've watched people pray beautifully worded prayers while their hearts were quietly full of doubt. I've done it myself. But Jesus is unmistakably clear — when you pray, believe that you *receive*. Present tense. Not "I hope to receive someday." Not "maybe if God feels like it." Receive — right now, in faith. This goes completely against our natural thinking, I know. Everything in us wants to wait until we see the evidence. But faith works the other way around. You believe first, then you see. That's not wishful thinking — that's the Kingdom operating exactly as God designed it. So today, ask God boldly, and dare to believe the moment those words leave your lips that something has already moved in the spirit.

Lord, I choose to believe right now, not when I see the answer. Help my faith be bigger than my doubt. I receive what I'm asking for, in Jesus' name.

After your prayer time today, speak out loud: "I believe I have received [your specific need], in Jesus' name" — and mean it.

Guard the Gate of Your Mind

2 Corinthians 10:5 — "Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ."

Nobody tells you how hard you'll have to fight to keep your faith alive once you've prayed. The doubt comes — sometimes like a whisper, sometimes like a machine gun. People say discouraging things, symptoms lie, circumstances shout. I've been there. When I was fighting cancer, Christians would call me to report that someone else with my condition had just died. Why would anyone do that? Because the enemy uses people, situations, and stray thoughts to erode what you've built in prayer. Here's what I want you to know — you can control your thoughts. God wouldn't command you to take them captive if you couldn't. You have authority over what you allow to stay in your mind. Don't rehearse the negative report. Don't entertain the doubt. Cast it down the moment it arrives. Your mind is the gateway to your faith, and your faith is the engine that receives your answer.

Jesus, I take authority right now over every thought of doubt and fear attacking my faith. I cast them down and I choose to think only what Your Word says about my situation.

Each time a negative or doubtful thought tries to settle in your mind today, say out loud: "I cast that down in Jesus' name" — and immediately replace it with a scripture.

Let Your Words Line Up With Your Faith

1 Peter 3:10 — "He who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit."

You can undo your own prayers with your mouth. That's a hard truth, but I believe it with everything in me. You can stand in church declaring healing, then go home talking about how terrible you feel. You can pray for financial breakthrough, then spend the day rehearsing all the reasons it won't happen. Friend, your words are not neutral — they carry weight. Life and death are in the power of the tongue. I've spoken over my own bills when I was nearly bankrupt, calling them paid in Jesus' name, and watched God move. It didn't happen overnight, but I kept my mouth lined up with my faith, not with what I saw. When you truly believe you've received something, your talk will reflect it. You'll speak like it's already done. That consistency between your prayer and your words is not pretending — it's faith in action.

Father, set a guard over my mouth today. Let every word I speak agree with what I've prayed and what Your Word promises. I want my talk to sound like someone who believes they've already received.

Identify one area where your words have been contradicting your prayers, and today consciously replace those negative statements with a faith declaration from Scripture.

The Word Has to Get Inside You

James 1:22 — "Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves."

I spent years watching people wear the faith message like a label someone had stuck on them. The moment life got hard, it peeled right off. That's because the Word was never truly inside them — it was just information they'd collected. Real faith isn't a label; it's a root. I went through the entire New Testament slowly, eight to ten verses a day, just me and Jesus. No commentaries, no other voices — just letting the Word get into me. And when it got in me, nothing could peel it off. That's what James is saying — don't just hear it, *do* it. Meditate on it, speak it out, act on it, fight with it. When the Word genuinely lives inside you, your prayer life transforms. You stop begging and start believing. You stop wondering and start receiving. Get the Word in you, friend — that's where answered prayer begins.

Holy Spirit, help me not just read the Word but truly absorb it until it becomes part of who I am. Make me a doer, not just a hearer, so my prayers carry the weight of a life built on Your truth.

Choose one scripture from this week's devotionals and spend five minutes today reading it slowly, speaking it aloud, and writing down what it personally means for your life right now.
