No Fear in Love

Pastor Mirek Hufton · 2020-04-01

In a season of widespread anxiety, Pastor Mirek Hufton delivered a timely message declaring that walking in God's love is the antidote to fear. Drawing from 1 John 4, he taught that perfect love and fear cannot coexist, where fear takes hold, we've lost our grip on the assurance of God's love for us. The message challenged believers to shift their focus outward, toward God in worship and toward others in service. When love directs our attention away from ourselves, fear loses its foothold. Pastor Hufton anchored the message in Psalm 91, reminding the congregation that those who "set their love upon God" receive His promise of protection, including from "the perilous pestilence." He vividly illustrated this with the image of a mother hen spreading her wings as a hawk circled, sheltering every chick beneath her, a picture of God's covering over those who run to Him in love and faith.

No Fear in Love

Small Group Discussion Guide

Based on the sermon by Pastor Mirek Hufton

1. SERMON RECAP

In this message, I walked us through what I believe is one of the most important truths we can carry in anxious, pressure-filled times — that perfect love casts out fear. I showed us from 1 John 4:17-19 and Psalm 91 that when we set our love upon God, obey His command to love others, and anchor ourselves in His Word, the grip of fear loses its power. The key is shifting our focus outward — toward God and toward people — because love is always other-centred, and that's exactly where fear cannot follow.

2. KEY SCRIPTURE

Romans 5:5 (NKJV) "Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us."

3. ICE BREAKER

Think of a time when someone's calm, steady presence helped you stop feeling afraid — maybe a parent, a friend, or even a stranger. What was it about them that brought you comfort? Share with the group!

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Pastor Mirek described fear as a spiritual force — not just an emotion — that Satan uses to drain the life out of people. Do you agree that fear operates on a deeper level than just feelings? Can you think of a time when fear felt like something more than just worry or anxiety?

2. Romans 5:5 tells us that God's love has already been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. If that's true — if love is already in us — why do you think fear still manages to get such a strong foothold in our lives? What tends to open the door to it?

3. I talked about how walking in love — toward God and toward other people — naturally shifts your focus away from yourself, and that this shift is one of the most powerful weapons against fear. What does that look like practically in your daily life? Is it easy or hard to stay outward-focused when you're personally under pressure?

4. Pastor Mirek used the picture of a mother hen spreading her wings to protect her chicks from a circling hawk. How does that image speak to you personally? What does it look like for you to "run under the wings" of God when fear starts circling?

5. 1 John 4:18 says that "fear involves torment" and that a person who fears "has not been made perfect in love." Pastor Mirek connected this to feelings of condemnation, guilt, and a sense that God might not really be there for us. Have you ever experienced fear that was really rooted in feeling distant from God or unsure of His love for you? How did you find your way back to assurance?

6. Philippians 4:8 challenges us to deliberately fill our minds with what is true, noble, pure, lovely, and of good report — especially when bad news is loud and constant. What are some specific, practical habits that help you guard what you're meditating on? What makes this hardest for you right now?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, choose one person in your life who is visibly anxious or overwhelmed right now — a neighbour, a coworker, a family member, or someone from our church community. Reach out to them with a specific, practical act of love: drop off a meal, send a handwritten note with an encouraging scripture, make a phone call just to listen, or offer to help with something concrete. As you do it, pray Psalm 91:14 over yourself: "Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him." Notice how loving outwardly affects your own level of fear throughout the week, and be ready to share what you experienced with the group next time.

6. PRAYER POINTS

  • For freedom from fear and torment: Pray specifically for any group member who has named a fear during discussion — that the Holy Spirit would flood them with the tangible love of God and that anxiety would be replaced with boldness and peace.

  • For those on the front lines: Pray for doctors, nurses, first responders, and caregivers in our community who are under extreme pressure — that God would assign His angels over them, sustain them physically and emotionally, and use our church to be a practical expression of His love to them.

  • For our church family to walk in love: Pray that we would keep our eyes outward — toward God and toward people — and that our congregation would be known in our community during this season as people who love fearlessly and give generously.

7. MEMORY VERSE

1 John 4:18 (NKJV) "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love."

Leader's Note: Don't rush the discussion — sometimes the most important conversations happen when you slow down and let people be honest about where they're really struggling. It's okay to sit with a question for a while. Your job isn't to have all the answers; it's to create a safe space where people can encounter God's love together.

Love That Drives Out Every Fear

1 John 4:18 — "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love."

I want to speak something straight into your heart today — fear is not your portion. When I look at what's happening in our world, I see people gripped by anxiety, tension, and dread. But here's what I know to be absolutely true: the moment you step into the love of God, fear loses its grip. Perfect love isn't something you manufacture on your own — it flows from God himself, poured into your heart by the Holy Spirit. When you truly know how much God loves you, when that revelation gets down into your spirit, fear simply cannot stay. It has no room. Think of it like light and darkness — they cannot occupy the same space. God's love is that light. Let it flood every corner of your heart today, and watch fear scatter.

Father, I receive your perfect love right now and I ask it to push every fear out of my heart. Let your love be so real to me today that fear finds no foothold. In Jesus' name, amen.

Write down one fear that's been troubling you, then write 1 John 4:18 beside it and declare out loud: "Perfect love casts out this fear."

The God Who Comforts You Right Now

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 — "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation."

I want you to know something personal today — God is not distant from what you're going through. He is the God of ALL comfort, and that word "all" means he has comfort for every single situation you're facing. When I think about the pressures people are carrying right now — fear about health, finances, the future — I'm reminded that God isn't sitting in heaven detached from your struggle. He's leaning in. He's like that mother hen I love to picture, spreading her wings wide, calling her chicks close when the hawk is circling. The scriptures were written for exactly this moment — to bring you hope through patience and comfort. His Word is a healing balm. When you open it and read it out loud, something supernatural happens — God himself begins to speak comfort directly into your weary heart.

God, you are my comforter and I need you today. Wrap your arms around me and let your peace settle every anxious thought. Thank you that you are always near. Amen.

Read Psalm 91 out loud slowly today — every single verse — and receive it as God speaking comfort personally over you.

Set Your Love on Him

Psalm 91:14 — "Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name."

I love this verse so much because God makes it so personal. He's saying — because YOU chose to set your love on ME, I will personally step in and deliver you. This isn't just theology, this is a promise with your name on it. When I worship God in my quiet time and I feel his presence come upon me, something shifts — suddenly I feel like I can run through a troop and leap over a wall. That's what happens when you press into loving God. Your focus moves upward and outward, off of yourself and your worries, and onto him. And when your eyes are on him, fear shrinks. Love is always outward-minded — toward God first, then toward people. When you walk that way, you activate God's protection over your life. Set your love on him today and watch what he does.

Lord, I set my love on you today — not on my fears, not on my circumstances, but on you. Deliver me as you promised, and let your presence strengthen me right now. Amen.

Spend ten minutes in worship today — put on a worship song, close your eyes, and simply tell God out loud three things you love about him.

The River Flows Outward

Romans 5:5 — "Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us."

The Holy Spirit didn't just drip a little love into your heart — he poured it out. That word "poured" is lavish, generous, overflowing. And here's what I've learned about God's love — it was never meant to pool up inside you like a stagnant pond. Jesus said out of your belly shall flow rivers of living water, and a river always flows away from you toward somebody else. When you're consumed with fear, everything curves inward — it's all about protecting yourself, securing yourself, worrying about yourself. But love breaks that cycle. I'm so moved when I hear stories like the neighbor in New York who raised eighty thousand dollars just to feed hospital workers — she stopped thinking about herself and started thinking about others. That's the love of God in action. When you let it flow outward, something miraculous happens — fear loses its power over you completely.

Holy Spirit, let the love you poured into my heart overflow today onto everyone around me. Show me one person I can bless, encourage, or pray for, and help me be your river. Amen.

Reach out to one person today — a neighbor, a friend, someone elderly or alone — with a simple act of kindness, a phone call, a meal, or a genuine word of encouragement.

No Plague Shall Come Near Your Dwelling

Psalm 91:10 — "No evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling."

I want to close this week by planting this promise deep in your spirit — God wrote these words for you, for right now, for this very moment in history. This isn't wishful thinking, this isn't positive confession disconnected from reality — this is the living Word of Almighty God, and every promise in him is yes and amen. When you walk in love, when you dwell in the secret place, when you set your love upon him — this promise becomes your inheritance. I believe with everything in me that angels are being assigned to households that are walking in faith and love right now. Don't let the enemy steal this week from you through fear. You've been built for faith — Romans 12:3 says God gave you that faith. Use it. Stand on this Word over your home, your family, your health. Say it out loud, mean it, and refuse to let fear have the last word.

Father, I stand on your Word today — no evil shall befall me and no plague shall come near my home. I believe you, I trust you, and I thank you for your angels watching over my family. In Jesus' mighty name, amen.

Write Psalm 91:10 on a card or sticky note, place it on your front door, and declare it as a prayer of protection over your home and everyone in it.
