"Change Your Day, Change Your Life" — Pastor Linda Hufton
1. SERMON RECAP
Pastor Linda Hufton opened with a compelling observation from leadership teacher John Maxwell: you will never change your life until you change something you do daily, because the secret of your success is found in your daily routine. She drew on Proverbs 8 to show that Wisdom — ultimately Jesus himself — is crying out at the gates every day, inviting believers to watch, wait, and listen for his voice. Pastor Linda challenged the congregation to examine their daily devotional habits and make small, consistent changes in their walk with God that will ultimately produce significant, lasting transformation.
2. KEY SCRIPTURE
Proverbs 8:34-35 (NKJV)
"Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoever finds me finds life, and obtains favor from the Lord."
3. ICE BREAKER
What is one daily habit or routine you have kept for years that you would genuinely struggle to give up, and why does it matter so much to you?
4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Question 1 Pastor Linda quoted John Maxwell: "You will never change your life until you change something that you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine." Do you find that statement encouraging, convicting, or somewhere in between? What does your current daily routine say about what you value most?
Question 2 Pastor Linda used the image of David and Goliath to illustrate how one defining day is built on countless hidden daily choices made long beforehand. She pointed out that David had already faced a lion and a bear in private before he faced Goliath in public. How have your own private, daily habits — whether spiritual or otherwise — prepared you (or left you unprepared) for a challenge you did not see coming?
Question 3 Proverbs 8 describes Wisdom crying out at the gates, inviting people to listen. Pastor Linda noted that hearing God requires intentionally reducing the noise in our lives. Where does your life feel loudest right now, and what would it practically look like for you to create more quiet space for God's voice?
Question 4 Pastor Linda shared how the Holy Spirit reframed her perspective on daily problems, showing her that she was not merely a problem solver but a peacemaker. He then encouraged her to bring those problems to God as a fresh, living prayer list each week. How does viewing your everyday challenges as prayer assignments rather than burdens change the way you think about your own week?
Question 5 Pastor Linda described the four legs of a healthy Christian walk as the Word of God, prayer, giving, and church attendance, and she said that if any one of those legs is missing, the whole table becomes unstable. Without turning this into a confession session, which of those four areas do you think believers most commonly let drift, and what tends to cause that drift?
Question 6 Pastor Linda closed by reminding the group that adult life means nobody is standing over us making us read our Bibles or pray — consistency requires self-discipline, which she defined as "remembering what you really want." What do you really want your relationship with God to look like one year from now, and what is one daily habit that would move you toward that picture?
5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE
This week, choose one specific area from the four legs Pastor Linda described — the Word, prayer, giving, or church attendance — where your consistency has been weakest. Write down one concrete, daily action you will take every day for the next seven days to strengthen that area. For example, you might set a specific time to read one chapter of Scripture each morning, write out three fresh prayer concerns each evening before bed, or plan in advance which services you will attend this week. At your next group meeting, be ready to share what you did and what you noticed.
6. PRAYER POINTS
-
Ask God to reveal any area of daily life where noise, distraction, or simple neglect has made it difficult to hear his voice, and ask him for the grace and self-discipline to make a genuine change.
-
Pray that each group member would develop the habit of bringing their everyday problems and people challenges to God as a living prayer list, trusting him to work as a peacemaker through their intercession.
-
Thank God that his wisdom is not hidden or distant but is actively crying out to his people every day, and ask for ears that are open and expectant at his gates.
7. MEMORY VERSE
Proverbs 8:34 (NKJV)
"Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors."
Daily Devotional
The Secret Hidden in Your Daily Routine
Proverbs 8:34 — "Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors."
On Wednesday I shared something that stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it: you will never change your life until you change something you do daily. I know that sounds almost too simple, but stay with me. Wisdom — Jesus himself, because the Bible tells us He was made unto us wisdom — is standing at a gate, crying out, inviting you in. And the blessing is not reserved for the extraordinary or the spiritually advanced. It is promised to the one who shows up daily. Not perfectly. Not dramatically. Just consistently. Think about what your average morning looks like right now. Is there even a small space in it where you are genuinely listening for His voice? That space, however small it starts, is where everything begins to shift.
Lord, I want to be someone who watches and waits at your gates every single day. Help me carve out that space and guard it. I trust that if I show up, you will meet me there.
One Day Can Change Everything
Proverbs 8:35 — "For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord."
On Wednesday I talked about David. He was just a shepherd boy with a daily habit of seeking God, writing psalms, fighting lions and bears in fields where nobody was watching. And then one day came, and everything changed. Goliath opened his mouth, and something on the inside of David rose up because he had been building something in private all along. That day did not make David. David had already been made. The day simply revealed it. I want you to sit with that today. The favor and the life that Proverbs 8 promises are not things God drops on you in a moment out of nowhere. They grow in the soil of your daily life. What you do when no one is watching is preparing you for the day when everything is. Do not despise the ordinary days. They are doing something in you.
Father, thank you that my ordinary days are not wasted in your hands. Build something in me in private that you can use in public. I trust your timing.
Bring Your Problems to the Prayer List
Proverbs 8:14 — "Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom; I am understanding, I have strength."
On Wednesday I confessed something personal. I had gotten into a rut with my prayer life. I was praying, yes, but there was a dullness to it. Then I heard a simple message about keeping a prayer list, and the Holy Spirit used it to breathe fresh life into the way I come to God. What changed for me was seeing the daily problems and dilemmas that come up — the people situations, the tensions at work, the things I could not fix — not as interruptions, but as my prayer list. God reminded me that I am not just a problem solver. I am a peacemaker. And every problem that lands on my desk or in my home is an invitation to bring God onto the scene. He has the counsel. He has the wisdom. I just have to bring it to Him.
Lord, I give you every situation I am carrying today that I cannot fix on my own. I need your counsel and your wisdom. Come onto the scene.
The Fig Tree and the Promise of Fruit
Proverbs 27:18 — "Whoever keeps the fig tree will eat its fruit; so he who waits on his master will be honored."
On Wednesday I actually passed around figs from the tree right here at our church. I wanted everyone to hold something real, something tangible, because that is exactly what this verse is promising. If you tend the fig tree, you eat the fruit. It is not a maybe. It is not conditional on your feelings or your circumstances. It is simply the law of sowing and reaping, and it applies directly to your devotional life. If you tend your time with God — if you water it, protect it, show up to it even when you do not feel like it — you will eat the fruit. You will be honored. That honor is just as real and just as tangible as a ripe fig in your hand. Do not give up on the tree just because the fruit has not appeared yet. Keep tending it. The season is coming.
Lord, help me be faithful to tend what you have given me, even when I cannot yet see the fruit. I trust that the harvest is real and it is coming.
Shore Up the Wobbling Leg
Proverbs 8:32 — "Now therefore, listen to me, my children, for blessed are those who keep my ways."
On Wednesday I talked about the four legs of a healthy Christian walk — the Word of God, prayer, giving, and church attendance. Any table missing a leg will tip over the moment any real weight lands on it. And life will put weight on your table. It always does. I think a lot of us know which leg is a little shorter than the others. We do not need someone to tell us. The Holy Spirit has already been nudging us about it. What I want to leave you with as this week closes is this: you do not have to overhaul your entire life today. You just have to change one thing. One small, daily thing. Wisdom is still crying out. The gate is still open. The door is still there. Show up tomorrow and the day after that, and watch what God does with your ordinary, faithful, daily life.
Father, show me which leg needs attention and give me the grace to shore it up. I do not want to do this in my own strength. Help me keep your ways, starting today.
