Small Group Discussion Guide

4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Pastor Mirek noted that the apostle Paul opens 1 Corinthians 12 by saying he does not want believers to be ignorant of spiritual gifts. On a scale of one to ten, how confident would most people in an average church feel if asked to list and define all nine gifts of the Spirit? Why do you think this kind of spiritual illiteracy is so common, and what is at stake when the church remains uninformed about the gifts?

2. Pastor Mirek described the word of wisdom as a supernatural, God-given glimpse into the future — entirely distinct from natural intelligence, education, or life experience. He drew on examples ranging from Jesus directing Peter to the right side of the boat in Luke 5 to the vision given to John in Revelation. What separates a genuine word of wisdom from a good hunch, wishful thinking, or personal ambition? How can a believer develop the discernment to tell the difference?

3. Pastor Mirek was direct in saying that the gifts of the Spirit are conditional, not automatic. A word of wisdom about the future does not unfold on its own — it requires the believer's cooperation, faith, and obedience. He pointed to Hezekiah, who received a word that he would die, yet wept and prayed and received fifteen more years as a result. What does this teach the group about the relationship between prophetic words and personal responsibility? Does it change how you receive a word from God?

4. He shared personal stories of times when a word of wisdom kept him from a costly mistake, including cancelling a mission trip that turned out to be a disaster, staying faithful to the vision for the church in Roswell rather than taking over an established congregation, and persisting in faith to secure a building even after being thrown out of the initial meeting. What patterns do you notice across those stories? What role did patience, prayer, and community confirmation play in each situation?

5. Pastor Mirek referenced a warning from Kenneth E. Hagin about ministers who push the gifts out of expectation or performance pressure, risking stepping into familiar spirits rather than moving genuinely by the Holy Spirit. He also emphasized that ministry and the gifts should always be motivated by love, as 1 Corinthians 13 makes clear. In practical terms, what does it look like to desire the gifts earnestly while keeping love and service as the true motive? Where is the line between faith-filled pursuit and dangerous showmanship?

6. Pastor Mirek closed with a strong word that God is not finished developing and releasing the people in the congregation, and that the pace of that release is accelerating. He said faithfulness in the small things at the local church level is the proving ground for a broader calling. Where in your own life right now is God asking you to be faithful in something small before He entrusts you with something larger? What is making that faithfulness difficult?

5. APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, set aside fifteen to twenty minutes each day to pray specifically in the Spirit and then sit quietly before God, asking Him to give you a word of wisdom about one area of your life where you genuinely need direction — a relationship, a decision, a next step in ministry, or a concern you have been carrying. Write down anything that comes to your spirit during that time, no matter how small or incomplete it seems. At the end of the week, review what you wrote and look for any consistent themes or impressions. Bring those notes to your next small group meeting and be prepared to share what you sensed and how you plan to test and act on it.

6. PRAYER POINTS

• Pray that every person in the group would move from ignorance to understanding regarding the gifts of the Spirit, and that hunger for the gifts would grow in the congregation as a whole.

• Pray for protection and discernment as group members begin to step out in the revelation gifts, asking God to keep them grounded in His Word and accountable to the body of Christ.

• Pray for the ministry callings represented in the group — that each person would hear the conditional word of wisdom God has for their life, respond with obedience, and be faithful in the present season so they are ready for what God has prepared next.
